It was horribly executed, but the story concept wasnt necessarily bad.

The Neverending Story 2 - Having never read the book, I can't say for sure how far out of step this movie was with its predecessor... but from a film standpoint, this movie ditched everything that made the first movie so endearing. Bastian is an annoying and cowardly prick, while Atreyu and Falkor are reduced to background characters in favor of some *****e that looks like Howard the Duck. And then you have your typical "evil sorceress" villain who wants to take over Fantasia by manipulating Bastard... er... Bastian to forget who he is or something. I really don't remember all that much more about this film other than, when I saw it (at age 12) I thought it sucked. And bear in mind, at this age I like pretty much anything.

I do remember that the second film is actually semi faithful to the second half of the book. As the Neverending Story is just the first half of the actual story in the book.

In the book you learn that ....

Wearing the Auron slowly corrupts a human as they are not meant to use or handle that kind of power. He is even warned about it and shrugs it off.

So while you are right in the fact that the second movie is WAY different from the first, you would need to blame M. Ende for shifting the books tone and direction so much in the middle.
