My very delayed Takeover and slightly delayed Backlash thoughts:
Takeover was a darn good show. They had a strong card-pardon the pun- to begin with but it's how every match was booked is what makes the brand punch well above it's weight.
-Roddy came away with a victory over Sanity though it does make them feel a little weak. Hopefully they can get their heat back in the coming weeks and go on a tear.
-The UK Championship match... it was a very very good match. Very hard hitting, probably better than their earlier match in the UK Tournament final.
-The women's match was the weakest of the night which itself is a sign of how good the show was- it was a very good match in it's own right though there were some sloppy spots now and then.
-The nXt championship match was in my opinion Roode's best match till now. It was very well paced and ebbed and flowed wonderfully.
- The Tag Team Championship match obviously good since it involved #DIY and they seem to give their all to make their matches great. It was a good spot fest especially that ladder shot to Gargano's face- that was sick!
But the real story was after the match when The Psycho Killer finally struck Johnny Wrestling down, and how.
My question to fellow members is this though- because I'm kinda of the opinion that they had a MUCH higher ceiling as a Tag Team on the main roster than singles wrestlers where they'd probably play second fiddle to Hideo as he takes the Cruiserweight Division forward. What are you guys opinions on that?
Backlash, I thought was decent, slightly above average, since it had multiple excellent matches.
-Nakamura-Ziggler did Ziggler a lot of favours while establishing Nakamura as an upper midcard threat. And while I understand people asking him to be booked like a Brock Lesnar, I kinda prefer this.
-I would have preferred Tye coming in and having a more meaningful first feud or at least something that built Aiden English up before going up against Tye, but I guess it is what it is. Decent match.
-The Tag Team match was one of the funniest matches I've seen in a while in the WWE. Breeze rolling around trying to avoid the splash was hilarious. So was the dress smacking JBL in the face- JBL was great in this match though, it has to be said. I thought the match had a slightly weak finish. It should have either been stereo superkicks or a splash.
-The Women's match was a bit meh. I have no insight to share.
- AJ-Owens is probably match of the night though I would have preferred a huge spot at some point- may be a Styles clash or a pop up powerbomb on the outside. The suplex on the ring apron came close though. A countout win to keep the feud going, probably till Summerslam. May be AJ will be kayfabe injured for Shinsuke to step up leading to a triple threat a SummerSlam. I'd have preferred one more feud for Shinsuke before building up to the US Title feud but there are no heels on SD.
- The WWE Championship was very good, not at a technical level but booking wise. Though I thought Randy was invested and really gave it his all. I don't know what to think of Jinder as champion. I'm curious, I guess. The problem with the entire thing is actually what came BEFORE the push. And that is always gonna stay like an albatross around this arc.
