The Wrestling Thread Won't Beg, But it will Ask Nicely

Haha! Well it wasn't working and they were hinting at it in a couple of his recent matches, but I think a little bit more of a gradual build to the return to his original character would have been better but everything is rushed these days in wrestling.

Pretty much agreed on both points.

The first spoiler could have worked if it was booked right but TNA just doesn't have the right creative people in place to follow through with it. Kevin Sullivan or Heyman could have made that character arc work to perfection.

I agree with you both...TNA mishandled this storyline, which definitely had potential. They gave him this gimmick, but didn't seem to know what to do with it.

They should have stuck a little closer to the Sting/Crow angle, with AJ defending TNA's honor against Bully at Bound For Glory, but whatever. He may still end up there, but that should have been the culmination of this "lone wolf" character.

Still, as I said earlier, they were probably ultimately heading in the direction of the first spoiler anyway, but Angle's DUI and subsequent rehab stint made them fast forward their plans.

Full 8/22 Impact spoilers from PWInsider.com:

WHO REPLACED KURT ANGLE, WHO LOST THE MAIN EVENT AND MUST LEAVE TNA - FULL 8/22 IMPACT SPOILERS

By Billy Krotchsen on 2013-08-15 22:18:08

The 8/22 Impact opens w/ Bad Influence & Roode in the ring. Roode congratulates Bully on his world title win but says he now has a target on his chest. Roode says he's in 2nd place in the BFG series & asks Austin Aries to join him & Bad Influence to have more control of the series. James Storm & Gunner interrupt, leading to a tag match. Roode & Kazarian win the match after a low blow by Roode to Storm.

Manik def Sonjay Dutt. I guess the rule about X Division matches having to be 3 ways is done or TNA just forgot.

Joseph Park won a street fight against Chris Daniels, Jay Bradley & Hernandez. Aries came out & looked like he was going to help Daniels but instead hit him.

Bully comes out w/ Tito Ortiz who's now a member of Aces & 8s. They gloat about Bully winning the title & Bully says he's gonna shock the world by revealing his Brooke. Out comes Brooke Tessmacher & she makes out w/ Bully. Bully says he has the 'hot Brooke' now.

Gail Kim beat ODB.

The 5th man in the Main Event Mafia is AJ Styles, who is back to being phenomenal w/ his old theme song. The crowd loved it. Main event time.
Devon, Brisco, Bischoff, Anderson & Knux were the Aces and 8s team. Styles Clash on Devon for the win, the crowd went nuts. Devon must leave TNA, perhaps to take the agent job that was vacated by D' Lo Brown.

The crowd chanted "Thank you Devon" after the match. He posed for the crowd and then left.

Much of the crowd left after this, but TNA taped an Xplosion match where Jay Bradley beat Joseph Park.

Brock Lesnar gave a rare interview to the LA Times this week to promote his upcoming match with CM Punk at WWE SummerSlam this Sunday. In the interview, the former UFC world champion spoke on his health, stating that he has thought about what it'd be like to return to the octagon.

"Now I feel great; there's days I think I can get back into the octagon and be the same human being I was before. But I'm on another chapter."

Lesnar expressed enthusiasm about his upcoming match: "I'm excited to squash CM Punk like a little bug and move on to my next victim."

Speaking of the former WWE Champion's next victim, there has been rumor that a match at WrestleMania XXX next year would be his last with the company, and he signed another temporary contract for three matches, according to the Wrestling Observer. However, Lesnar stated that he will be sticking around for awhile yet. He has "at least a couple more WrestleManias" left in the tank before moving on from his second stint in pro wrestling.
Such shoddy journalism, Brock signed a new 2 year deal on the eve of Mania 29, his last match will be Mania 31 at the earliest, and who knows, this is easy money for him, he may sign another extension as he'll only be 37.
Rob Van Dam has posted a new audio blog which you can listen to at this link, and amongst many topics discussed, RVD talked about his return to WWE and offered the following on the quality of his matches since his return to the company:
"WWE is truly the best of the best when it comes to professional wrestling...What makes it the best? Way, way, way more people watch WWE than any other wrestling.

They have the best wrestlers...I can tell you from being in the ring with these guys that once I went to WWE I noticed right away the skill level, the well roundedness, the talent of the wrestlers in WWE, way above where I have been before.

Many of you noticed my matches were better, but you couldn't put your finger on why they're better. I'm telling you it's because I'm swimming in a different pool. Some of the other guys - their achievements are not as grand, the stars that they have wrestled are not as well-rounded. They're used to wrestling each other, and they're limited, and even though fans may prefer that, it's gonna be a small group of fans that support that."
I definitely think he's sharpened up in the last few matches.

Paul Heyman recently did an interview with Xfinity, and the following are several interview highlights:

On Daniel Bryan:
"I'm not done recruiting Daniel Bryan. I think Daniel Bryan is a fascinating performer who has put on arguably the most consistent string of best matches of the past year. The striking thing about Daniel Bryan is the best is yet to come with him. Daniel Bryan still has more to offer. And having seen footage of him dating back to when he was wrestling in VFW halls and very small arenas and high school gymnasiums, he still has so much more that the WWE Universe hasn't seen. I'm admittedly, and I will confess to this, a huge fan of Daniel Bryan."
His thoughts on John Cena:
"I think there's a streak going involving John Cena that both the WWE Universe and the media have failed to pick up on. The glory days of 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin lasted two, maybe two-and-a-half years. That was the peak of his run. He came back as General Manager, but day-to-day, going to every city, main eventing every Pay Per View, the focal point of Monday Night Raw… Steve Austin's peak was two-and-a-half years. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's peak was along the same lines. John Cena has been the focal point of WWE since 2005. For eight and now going on nine years, John Cena has not only main evented all the Pay Per Views, been the major attraction on Raw. John Cena has gone to every city, main events all the live events, and yet he still makes all these media appearances, he's done more Make-A-Wish Foundation visits than anybody in history…and he's a tireless workhorse. And he shows up last Monday with his elbow…looking grotesquely…is that a word? His elbow was so messed up and yet he says, 'Wrap me up, I'm going out there to perform because the people are counting on me.' There is a work ethic to John Cena that is to behold."
His thoughts on Bray Wyatt:
"It's an emotional presentation, and it sets him apart from everyone else which means that Bray Wyatt will stand out. Whether it's in WWE or UFC or Major League Baseball or the NBA or the NFL or television or movies…any genre that is star-driven has the need for unique personalities. And Bray Wyatt is as unique as they come."
How TNA handled Rob Van Dam:
"I don't mind getting into detail. I think TNA squandered the opportunity of exploiting the talents of Rob Van Dam. And I don't think that's a mistake the WWE is going to repeat."

F4WOnline:

Current ROH World Tag Team Champions and former ROH World Champions, The American Wolves, Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards have been invited to a WWE tryout camp in late August along with Midwest indy wrestler Prince Mustafa Ali. No word yet on if The Wolves have accepted the offer but Davey Richards told a Mexican morning talk show earlier last month that he and Edwards were in talks with both WWE and TNA. It's believed they aren't interested in a TNA deal but if WWE were to make an offer they'd listen. If one doesn't come through they are happy sticking with ROH where both men are two of the top earners.

It might seem a bit insulting, especially to Richards, but get your foot in the door guys.

Former Diva Search contestant found dead

Former Bachelor and WWE Diva Search contestant Gia Allemand was found dead at her home in New Orleans. On August 12th she was found hanging by her boyfriend, who then called an ambulance, She was taken to hospital but was declared brain dead and was removed from life support 2 days later. Her death was a suspected suicide, She was 29 years old.

I can't say I remember her but that is very sad. :csad:

If Richards can modify his style, then perhaps I will become a fan. He's technically sound but little things that he does annoys me sometimes.

[/INDENT] His thoughts on John Cena:
"I think there's a streak going involving John Cena that both the WWE Universe and the media have failed to pick up on. The glory days of 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin lasted two, maybe two-and-a-half years. That was the peak of his run. He came back as General Manager, but day-to-day, going to every city, main eventing every Pay Per View, the focal point of Monday Night Raw… Steve Austin's peak was two-and-a-half years. I think the years thing is apart of the problem. At least for me it is. I had small time with Austin and Rock. I cherish the small time I got to watch those two when I was younger. They were rarely if ever stale for me, and I had the opportunity to miss them. 8 years as the focal point is insane, and I'm not sure if that fact is much of a positive. I'm tired of him being THE guy, like I've never been tired of anyone being number one before. It may not even be fair to compare him to those two in terms of time either, as Austin became number one at a pretty late age where he wrestled all over for different companies, and then Rock became number 1 and got so big that Hollywood took him. So who knows how long either of them would have been without those two facts. Would Cena be number one for so long. Heck would he be in the position he is in right now if Lesnar didn't leave in 04. I think that's a valid question given the reactions he gets.

I'll probably get some flack here, but I never really saw the appeal ( or threat ) of the Shield as a group.

only Ambrose is the most interesting member.

maybe initially when they were concerned with "righting injustices" and attacking established stars. but that angle has kind of died out, and now they just come across as thugs who come out of, and retreat back into, the crowds.

You're not the only one. The Shield has never really impressed me either.

Its funny Cena put in all that time and effort and fans in general will still never give him the respect they have for Austin and Maivia.

As for TNA, I'm glad Sabin got his sorry little ass kicked! For once, the company fixed one of their God awful mistakes!

I remember something like this being a topic for Mania. Basically you make a balanced (Can't be all main events) 8 match card using previous Summerslam matches. You must have a WWE, WHC, IC and Tag Title match on the card and you can't use any wrestler twice.

Obviously give reasons for you picks. :)

WWE Title Match - Rock vs Brock
Even though I'm a huge Bret Hart fan and don't care for The Rock, this just edged the classic escape cage match from 94 for me, I even nerdily went back and watched both the other night before doing the post, to decide. Rock vs Brock just had such an authentic feeling sports build which is hard to get in rasslin since the late 90's, and the match itself really is a spectacle showcase of two Supermen athletes with agility and exchanges uncommon for their size.

The Mega Powers vs The Mega Bucks
The main event that started it all, this was a time when tag team main events featuring big name singles stars happened so rarely that they could headline a PPV. On top of that It's actually a very good tag team match with a smooth ebb and flow between the faces and heels, then of course it has the killer moment where Miss Elizabeth whipped her skirt off and dazzled the heels, you could almost hear 22,000 jaws hit the floor in MSG, the distraction of the "secret weapon" allowed Hogan and Savage to finish off Dibiase and Andre and then celebrate with the lovely Miss Elizabeth in style! With so much charisma the arena was still buzzing with electricity ten minutes after the pin.

Unsanctioned - Shawn Michaels vs Triple H
A classic no holds barred war made all the more impressive by the fact HBK hadn't wrestled (Bar one match in TWA) for over 4 years. This is arguably the best match of their long rivalry and had a lot of original action and drama.

WHC TLC Match - Jeff Hardy vs CM Punk
One of the best ladder matches I've seen, the two styles complimented each other well and both guys were at their peaks as face and heel respectively which added some fire to the match as opposed to relying fully on the big spots. Instead they were well paced and spread throughout the match, with some neat counters and spectacular moments that had the crowd gasping.

Intercontinental Title Match - 'Ravishing' Rick Rude vs The Ultimate Warrior
This was the hardest one to choose as Summerslam has been the host of some of the greatest IC title matches of all time including my favourite between Bret and Mr Perfect. However I had to go with this one, the heat was incredible, Warrior and Rude pulled out moves and sequences you just didn't see back then and the drama built to the perfect conclusion. I still rate this as Warrior's greatest match.

The Big Boss Man vs The Mountie - Jailhouse Match
This was one of the hottest feuds in 1991 and I think most originally thought this would be a type of cage match when they heard the gimmick name, but instead it was a case of the loser having to spend the night in jail. I doubt this will make many lists but I thought it was a great mid card feud that served up a hot brawl at MSG with Boss Man finally giving The Mountie the beating he deserved in the end, great finish.

WWE Tag Team Title Match: 2 out of 3 Falls - Demolition vs The Hart Foundation
Demolition had a great 3 year run on top of the tag scene in WWF, going from heels to face and back to heels. This match was the final curtain as such and a fitting one. Just great oldschool tag wrestling with Bret playing underdog face for much of the match, Demolition working their pounding offense and the Hart's their slick tag moves, it even had some shenanigans with a switcheroo attempt using their new 3rd member Crush that was foiled by The Legion of Doom.

Kurt Angle vs Rey Mysterio
I tried to resist using another match from 2002 but there just isn't a better opening match in the history of the PPV in my view. Fast, exciting and full of energy that set the crowd off on the right note for the event.

Random tag pairing 24601?

I think I remember more from the peak of Austin and Rock than I remember the good stuff from good ol' John Boy.
I used to like him when he first came up, he had an attitude and good look.
Now its just boring I can predict the tone, pace and level of shouting for each promo. His skills have never developed and its clear his best matches are with those that work better and help make him look good.
He's like the Ultimate Warrior in that regard .. but I remember and love Warrior still to this day.

You're not the only one. The Shield has never really impressed me either.

Nor me .. Amborse is just average in everyway.
Reigns will make a semi good monster.
Rollins will just Jeff Hardy his way around ... just without any character or personality.

So has Obama called Darren Young to congratulate him yet like he did the NBA player that came out?

Two big new character directions for two TNA wrestlers next week's IMPACT.

Credit www.PWInsider.com

AJ Styles returns to being The Phenomenal AJ Styles complete with old theme, and joins the main Even Mafia in their match against Aces and Eights.

Brooke Tessmacher joins Aces and Eights and makes out with Bully and Bully says he has the "hot Brooke" now.

I may actually have to watch for that first one.

So has Obama called Darren Young to congratulate him yet like he did the NBA player that came out?

It's only the WWE, so he has to settle for a congratulatory call from the Canadian Minister of National Resources.

Definitely, it needed some oldschool mentality. In fairness though I think OnTheAir is right, the Kurt Angle arrest may have forced TNA into moving faster than they wanted.

Oh believe me, I can imagine quite a lot [/Han Solo] :D

Bully has to be very happy as [BLACKOUT]it'll be much easier getting heat on classic babyface AJ Styles, and who wouldn't want a storyline that calls for you to make out with Miss Assmacher every week?[/BLACKOUT] :D

I am also in agreement that the Angle situation most likely sped up their plans. Of course, I also heard the other day that TNA was slowly planning on changing the creative direction of the company knowing they have some problems. I'm sure that is another reason. I also believe Jarrett is involved with talent relations now.

AJ is the perfect foil for Bully. He is one of the few wrestlers who can pull off being the classic white meat babyface. I'm looking forward to their feud. And now Bully has true heat with me giving he will be making out with Assmacher
:cwink:

I agree with you both...TNA mishandled this storyline, which definitely had potential. They gave him this gimmick, but didn't seem to know what to do with it.

Still, as I said earlier, they were probably ultimately heading in the direction of the first spoiler anyway, but Angle's DUI and subsequent rehab stint made them fast forward their plans.

I think that was the ultimate goal, even if they were stumbling along the way.

That's a great role for Jarrett as he has the temprement and experience to help the guys. I think the biggest creative issue ios the Aces & Eights angle, once that is completed I think the show will pick up.

Totally agreed, plus AJ vs Bully at Slammiversary 2011 was one of the best matches in TNA history IMO and will give BFG a great main event. Haha! I bet he uses TNA's more relaxed guidelines cop an ass grab! :argh:
