Look at what happened when Shaline Woodly was cast...doesn't matter what color skin. This role is on a check list pedestal with fans. One way or the other backlash and rude comments are on their way.

I like how we've come to a point in society where people think changing the race of a white character is alright and anyone that is against it is a racist. This is the same dumb crap Ghostbusters tried to pull with misogyny. It would be the end of the world if it was the other way around.

Yeah, that's the biggest problem if this report is true. Mary Jane and Peter are my favorite comic couple. Always have been, always will be. If it was up to me, maybe I wouldn't have changed her ethnicity, but it's a damn shame that so many people would jump on this poor girl's throat simply because of the color of her skin. If fans have a problem with that, they should take it up with Marvel, Sony, Jon Watts, anyone else involved with the casting process, except her. She went to audition like everyone else and got the role, that's the only thing she is "guilty" of.

Fans were cruel against Dunst...calling her snaggletooth and lampooning her wig/hair. MJ is a major character in the SM mythos and they decided to change her race because....? Of course there is going to be backlash. Fans want an actress that looks like the character first and foremost. If she acts her pants off and sways people, then so be it. But, we don't have that yet so people react to what we do have...which is her appearance.

I don't think we've seen a great MJ yet.

a lot ppl didn't like dunst (i actually didn't mind it), they thought with marvel in the creative driver's seat they'd finally get one of the iconic spidey characters cast properly instead of an unproven pop singer

MJ is supposed to be the bombshell, the jackpot. raimi made her too girl next doorsy (literally) but this was a chance to "get it right" so to say

i still don't think she's MJ however, just b/c it's high school, MJ doesn't come til later, and umberto isn't always reliable.

I think some people need to stop being one-dimensional in their views towards others who may not enjoy this casting. Not being a fan of the casting doesn't mean you're a racist bigot. People pull the race card far too often nowadays. Personally I've never seen Zendaya in anything before, hence I'm not sure what to expect of her. Despite that I don't think this character needed to be racebended, I'm not against the actress not been Caucasian. I simply don't know much about her at all.

it's not so much about the race change anymore. It's that, based on what she looked like in the set pics, they are TOTALLY CHANGING the character herself.

As you said, MJ is supposed to be the hot, bombshell, jackpot. Even nerdy MJ in Ultimate was hot. Even nerdy Gwen in SSM was beautiful.

here, they've suppressed Zendaya's beauty to maker her very plain, average, and frumpy looking. for what will presumably be a transformation into a stunning beauty by the end of the film.

That is another character.

MJ does NOT go from conservative, frumpy looking wallflower to stunning beauty. She is supposed to be the wild, fun loving party girl who's so beautiful she would be "unobtainable" and out of Peter's league. But the fact they end up together - that the nerd does get the beauty - makes their relationship that much sweeter.

Change that and you change the whole character. and that's my biggest problem with this. It would be like making Peter a jock/athlete before the spider bite - it's NOT THE SAME THING!!

And it's not just Zendaya's MJ that bothers me.

It's the fact that I look at the rest of the HS cast and to me, they are completely UNRECOGNIZABLE!! None of them look like their comic book counterparts to me.

I mean......that Tony guy is supposed to be Flash??

Add to that and there seems to be a literal buffet of villains and potential villains thrown into this film.

IDK.......my interest in this has markedly dropped with all of these casting choices.

To me, it's feeling more and more what I feared - a SJW experiment using Spidey's cast of characters that could potentially become bloated with way too many characters.

and that is NOT what I wanted for Marvel's 1st crack at the character.

Agreed. She's the first actress (potentially) cast as MJ, that can completely sell the supermodel aspect. Hell, she is a model in real life.

All of this is pretty funny though. Fans rightfully wanted the rights to go back home to Marvel and they got it. (Bet most never saw this one coming!) Now, (for better or worse) this is what a Marvel Studios Spider-Man film is shaping up to be.

I'm excited.
