Just got home to this news! So glad MJ is part of the reboot, and happy with Zendaya playing her! Now let's hope they get the character right! :)

I'm fine with MJ being black, the only thing I'm wondering is how her character will be portrayed because she looks frumpy in the pictures and that's not usually how the character looks, at least not the most popular version of the character that most seem to have wanted.

A jackpot style transformation is all but guaranteed at this point.

I just hope the red hair, characteristics and modeling/actress role are present here. The stuff that's in the characters DNA.

If they get those right I'll be happy, otherwise I don't get why use MJ as opposed to someone else. This is arguably the most popular, loved and well known romantic interest in comics. A complete reinvention is not a good idea, nor is it needed.

Marvel got Parker and Spider-Man better then just about anyone within 10 minutes. So hopefully the same can be said for MJ.

I was looking forward to your thoughts!

There was a time when we were speculating that MJ wasnt going to appear for a few films or that she was going to be replaced, so as an MJ fan, I'm pretty stoked that they've chosen to revisit the character in a major way. And I've gotten MJ vibes from Zendaya back when she was first announced (moreso than Shailene Woodley or Dunst even). The stuff that we new about Michelle threw me off though. I have a feeling that though the backstory of this MJ will be altered (maybe making her a mash up of ultimate and 616), her personality will be on point.

The only Marvel character whose skin color matters that I can think of, is Black Panther (and related characters.). I would have prefered red hair, but hey whatever. She's gorgeous, she'll do great, that's all that should matter.

Completely agree overall. :woot:

Very excited to have MJ back on the big screen, especially after having finished both Spider-Man: Blue and Book 1 of the JMS run which has reignited my love for the character.

:funny: Yeah, exactly my thoughts when it comes to Slott.

Exactly. Slott is awful.

About as awful as this MJ casting news.

Way to throw cold water all over a movie most fans were looking forward to. I guess they really are going after the pure Disney channel demographic with this movie. Basically, they're telling all the 35+ year olds to stay away.

I turn 32 September 24th and I'm just fine with this casting. I don't think that 3 years would make me hate this casting choice. I assumed she gave a good audition and Marvel has gotten it right 90% of the time so I am super fine with the casting.

I'm not sure she won't. Based on her instagram selfies, I think she could definitely pull it off.

We all know how awful Marvel is at casting. Looks like just another time they dropped the ball! :o

I'd also like to take this time to remind everyone that numerous people said she was great in the comic-con footage.

EDIT: That picture Angryfantasyfan posted pretty much convinced me that she's the right one for the job. She's stunning.

Remaining open-minded, but ... I certainly hope she dyes her hair red.

EDIT: "Open-minded," in regards to the individual actress, not her race. :P I have heard not-so-nice things about her acting chops. I haven't seen it though, so we'll see.

In the end I'll just stay skeptical. They have mostly gotten casting right, but have had some misses. Thus could fall into either camp. Will hope for the best since if this Spider-Man doesn't turn out well....that'd be depressing.

We'll see if it works. Sadly no way to tell until the movie hits, unless she gets a decent presence in a big trailer.

Of course also possible she ends up just being a character named Michelle and this was all a waste of time. Though the odds seem pretty good. Safe to trust it unless Marvel actually goes out and denies it.

I think with a lot of things it just depends if it makes sense to you. If Zendaya=Mary Jane makes sense then move forward comfortably. If it doesn't...well people will survive.

You hope she doesn't look more like the character she's supposedly playing?
