Homecoming The Zendaya is Mary Jane thread

Just got home to this news! So glad MJ is part of the reboot, and happy with Zendaya playing her! Now let's hope they get the character right! :)

Completely agreed! I'm not at all surprised by this news and I feel pretty confident that Zendaya is going to win over most folks as MJ once the film finally comes out.

I'm guessing that they're aiming for a blend of USM Mary Jane and the SSM/616 Mary Jane. She's going to start off as frumpy and seemingly "plain," then floors Peter at the end of the film and arcs into full-on "Jackpot" mode. Considering how they were trying pretty hard to hide that she was playing MJ, I'm betting we won't find out her actual name until the end of the film either.

Assuming that's the general angle they're aiming for, I think it's a perfect way to go about MJ's character. I know most folks here were keen on getting an iteration of the character generally influenced by the 616 MJ, but I've always enjoyed Ultimate Mary Jane too and I think this approach offers a great balance of the two, much like the version we got of her in Spectacular Spider-Man.

Yup, this was another thought I had. Not just a great way of blending USM MJ and 616 MJ, but also a very John Hughes-esque type of twist in a character arc.

The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, Variety didn't confirm this, I don't think we should already change the title.

If Marvel wanted people to know about it before the movie started, they'd have announced it.

Regardless of its truth, it seems like a pretty big spoiler, no?

It is a spoiler yeah, but it would have been impossible to avoid the attention it's been getting. Blame Mayimbe

Dunst looked nothing like MJ to me. She has a very bland generic look. Not a sexpot that instantly draws your attention
All the ladies (not aged, nor pre-pubescent) in comic books look like sexpots.
What the heck is a generic look?

Hopefully they do this scene at the end

Looking forward to this part though

Based on how people have been saying it was supposed to be a big reveal at the end of the movie, yeah. But Mayimbe had beef with Sony, so he leaked it. Pretty petty if you ask me

Petty, pretty stupid too. I dont think he's not gonna get any more access after a stunt like this

Mayimbe is a tool. Wish he would've let the film maker's have this one.

Yeah that's my thing. So hes mad at Sony so he passes Off Sony, the filmmakers, Marvel, maybe some of the cast?

That's Elmayimbe for you. We'll see though, it seems his reasoning for saying she's MJ is because "she drops hints in one of the scripts."

Nope not really. Theres more to it with MJ as that is explicitly how she's described. Its part of her character that she oozes sex appeal. I didnt get that KD's MJ. She was very girl next door and was too lowkey for the role. I didnt hate her but she was far from the best choice

Want an example of a generic look? That would be Kirsten Dunst

Idk instill think if she wasn't MJ that someone in the know wouldve said something before the story spread like wildfire

Though I know next to nothing of Zendaya other than the fact that she's from the Disney factory line, I'm surprised at the mixed reception the casting has had so far. Granted, while Marvel Studios hasn't been stellar 100 percent of the time with casting, I'm sure, at the very least, it will be good.

Though to add fuel to the fire, I joked that the movie could do a whole "Dark Knight Rises" with her name, something like: "Can't find Michelle Jane? Try my full legal name. Yeah, you should go by your middle name instead. I like it- Mary Jane. Reminds me of the drug."

There's that too, so either way there's reason to believe it and reason to be skeptical.

She actually looks pretty well suited to the look there. I could warm up to her. Shame she's not a natural ginger, bit it is what it is. So what was up with the set pics with her looking a bit more frumpy with black hair?

Oddly enough, neither was Dunst. She's a natural blonde. And, even funnier, Bryce Dallas Howard, who played the blonde Gwen Stacy, is a natural redhead.

Who?
Ok, I can now say to the bottomless pits with this stuff.
