Homecoming The Zendaya is Mary Jane thread

They do it all the time.

So... maybe the big trades just don't know, and have no way to figure out if this is true or not, and so they're just going to remain silent, in confusion, unable to investigate the leads/sources of the smaller trades. Or maybe the just don't care enough about the story to report on it?

I'm being sarcastic, but I honestly know nothing about trades, so... maybe?

The big three trades wouldn't report on story details like this I don't think, particularly if it was spoilery. It's not what they do.

Yeah, the casting after Peter and Aunt May, and the "bi-racial Michelle" is what gave it away for me months ago. Like I said, they should've never tried to keep this a secret, it's beyond obvious.

Exactly.

I'm honestly expecting an official confirmation soon. They can't try to pretend this "leak" didn't happen.

I'm honestly not. They probably are going to try to wait it out and hope it does down, lol.

I just hope they don't get cold feet about it and reshoot stuff to make Zendaya just Michele instead of MJ (or cut her entirely like Sony did with Shailene).

Maybe Umberto burned a lot of bridges with Marvel/Sony though. lol Still, the guy has guts, you gotta give him that.

I'm just bummed knowing it was planned to be a big reveal which probably would've made me fanboy in the theater and now I already know it going in. :funny:

Exactly. One specific example from recent history is The Hollywood Reporter asking Marion Cotilliard about the "Miranda Tate is really Talia al Ghul" rumors that were circulating back in 2012 before The Dark Knight Rises came out, and her denying that they had any validity.

If THR hadn't thought there might be a chance that the rumors were valid, they wouldn't have asked about them in a sit-down interview, so, again, it goes back to what I said earlier about the major trades' silence on this speaking volumes.

Also, regarding The Wrap, the very notion that this might be true and was something that wasn't supposed to be leaked in and of itself greatly downgrades the chances of it being valid because, if it were and The Wrap cared one iota about their own journalistic credibility (which they would if they're actually as "legitimate" as harryoscop says they are), it never would've been reported on in the first place.

I'm actually glad this news is coming out now. Cuz now I have a year to sort out how I feel about this and decide if I want to see the movie.

I would be so livid if I went into the movie expecting Zendaya to be Michelle, the whole movie making me think Z is Michelle, and then at the end they reveal she's MJ.

I'd be leaving the theater with a huge WTF look on my face and not in a good way.

You think I'm ranting now?

I'd be even worse if that were to happen......lol

At this point, I would also expect denials from Marvel and the cast, when the topic is eventually brought up in interviews leading up to release. If this was supposed to be the big reveal, don't expect anyone from the production to confirm it.

Just like Cumberbatch/Khan. :funny:

Exactly. They either ignore it or flat out deny it until the film is released at this point.

Either way, it wouldn't be wise to confirm what was supposed to be a surprise. :oldrazz:

yup, this is gonna be a robin john blake thing, but it will actually be done right this time.

maybe she makes everyone call her Michelle because the Mary Jane name is so outdated.

Assuming for a moment that this has any validity (I remain skeptical), it's not out of the question for her full name to be "Mary-Jane Michelle Watson", but for her to choose to go by her middle name in public and at some point tell Peter her full name and let him call her by her first name rather than the name she goes by in public.

Let's not turn this into some political thing, please :whatever:

I didn't turn it into anything. The nastier pushback to this casting speaks for itself. :whatever:

The Mary Jane Barbie dolls should start getting designed now. Push lots of merchandise.

YA novels should be getting written now with nu-MJ...

Yep, it may be a Dinah "Laurel" Lance thing. Sort of.

This one is a photoshop, the real one is this:

I didn't like Portman in Thor, didn't care for her performance and I don't believe that she had chemistry with Hemsworth. Thought Norton and Tyler weren't quite right for their roles, don't care for Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye either and think I think Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a poor actor who was miscast.

I forgot all about Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Sure, he might be closer than Evan Peters' incarnation- minus the whole mutant or High Evolutionary backstory or however you see it- but yeah, if he can be good in Kick-Ass, it baffles me that he's not as good in Age of Ultron.

see. this is what I don't understand.

why couldn't they have made her look like she does in those pics?

why does she have to "transform" into that look by the end of the film, after spending the rest of the movie looking so totally opposite and different.

The different race aside, you look at those pics and you do get an MJ vibe.

you look at the set pics, you get no MJ vibe whatsoever.

Clearly, Zendaya can pull of the MJ look, so why the drastic "makedown" into what we got in the set pics?

They're going the Basket Case route with her. Simple as that.

Still an improvement over Dunst.

Zendaya actually looks like a successful model/actress who would never date a nerd.

yeah. it would be really stupid if they went out of the way to avoid calling her by her name in the movie to try to have that big "reveal" at the end.

If they did that, people would be rolling their eyes throughout the movie everytime she says her name is Michelle, only to reveal it as MJ at the end.

But maybe Peter will also reveal his name to be Miles at the end of the movie. :o

Really? Clearly people have never met anyone who's gone by their middle name. :o
