Homecoming The Zendaya is Mary Jane thread

It is what it is.

I'm not entirely sold on the new Peter Parker but I'm still seeing the first film of the new series. :oldrazz:

and that's why I've really lost interest in this film.

which is unfortunate because I was really excited for Marvel to finally get their hands on Spidey.

and this is what we're getting?

I'm sorry, but no thanks.

Really? Clearly people have never met anyone who's gone by their middle name. :o

Whether it's her middle name or not, the point is that everyone already knows the "surprise" going in, so people will be just waiting for that moment when she does a TDKR reveal at the end. The reason I say people would be rolling their eyes everytime she refers to herself as Michelle is because it's not fooling anyone anymore, so it's a pointless name substitution now.

All that is needed, if they're going to go with a surprise for Peter, is that she has an image makeover like Olivia Newton John in Grease. Sandy didn't suddenly say "you can call me Cindy" instead. It's not like whether she's called Michelle or Mary Jane will suddenly change everything for Peter. But he might sit up and take notice if she looks different.

But as far as the audience are concerned, it's not a surprise anymore, so no point playing it like it is some big twist.

Poor quality since this was an instgram video done outside.

Anyway, she might not actually have a name or be referred to by a name in the movie.

If someone I know is named Jacob, I don't call out Jacob every time I see Jacob, I just talk to Jacob.

So if she's a classmate I don't see Peter or Ned constantly saying "Hey Michele", "This is so funny Michele", "Michele where you going" etc. They're gonna be like "Hey what's up" "blah blah hobbies, blah blah party, blah blah homecoming" They may even have Peter ask who she is, and Ned say something like "I think it's Michele or something with an M"

I think if everyone's name is mentioned at least once, but we still don't know Zendaya's character's name towards the end of the movie or aren't sure, that should give the audience a hint that a reveal is coming, and that's when her real name is revealed.

so, I just read in an article where Zendaya was commenting on how her character is "super dry and awkward."

ummmm......yeah........that sounds just like MJ. :whatever:

I said something similar in the gen discussion thread. I like this idea, and would love to see if they would be able to pull something like this off.

So was that red hair pic just a shop job? I thought that was real.

But people don't completely avoid a person's name either, unless someone has trouble using names (which some people do). But not absolutely everyone is going to avoid using a name. There will be at least one person who will use it. In Civil War, one of the first things we heard when Holland appeared on the scene was him calling out May's name and her calling him Peter.

And people will usually say it at least once, especially in a film. To avoid it completely makes it look like you're going deliberately out of your way to avoid using it.

Even at the end of Skyfall, it seemed somewhat implausible that Bond never knew Eve's full name as Eve Moneypenny. He had to wait until when the mission was over to say that they haven't been formally introduced? But they spent time together before when she gave him a shave during their mission. And you'd think when they first met that someone would've actually introduced her as Agent Moneypenny, not Eve or Agent Eve, especially since everyone else is introduced by their surname.

The whole "Is she Michelle? Is Michelle a middle-name or codename?"-thing is stupid to me. It just reeks of "Is Benedict Cumberbatch really Khan? Is Christopher Waltz really Blofeld?" And if she does end up being MJ, why make it some big secret or pull some shenanigans or some name twist?

If they wanted her to be MJ, just make her MJ. They're still going to receive fan backlash one way or another so why be wusses about it. I wouldn't be surprised with the firestorm it's creating online they pull a TMNT reboot and have both MJW In Name Only and real MJ together similar to Oroko Saki and Eric Sachs. Meh.

And I was really looking forward to having Peter go through several different loves in each movie before meeting Gwen and eventually MJ. Throwing MJ into the mix first is just to me trying to be Raimi all over again.

See I'm not a fan of the "a different love interest in every movie" myself. I have no problem with MJ appearing straight away (it doesn't mean that she has to be a flat-out LI right away BTW though).

Also if they're going with Tony Stark being a big part of Spidey's early career in this version, then this isn't a big deal by comparison.

Provided that any of this is actually true, the internal narrative motivation wouldn't be to "surprise" audiences with "Michelle is MJ", but to reveal something about her character and give her an 'arc'.

Thinking about it as a sort of "bait-and-switch" is, IMO, completely missing and misinterpreting the point.

Jeez have you seen this movie already cause how in the world do you know MJ is going to be his love interest in this movie? Just cause she's in it doesn't mean she's the main love interest. Maybe her reveal was supposed to be a surprise in the movie itself which might explain why its been kept quiet. Maybe she only shows up in the final minutes of the film. Lets not overreact or anything.

I kind of am not keen on keeping the character's identity a secret through the whole movie only to reveal it at the end.

I'm just saying. This bait and switch device has been used numerous times before as of late in the last few years, and it doesn't really work.

Audiences don't like it either.

The only thing I don't like is the surprise ending thing. It is utterly pointless and you are right, it has not been pulled off in the last few years. The Talia al Ghul, John "Robin" Blake and Khan reveals were laughable.

THAT I can live with, I guess. But I was thinking if they were going to call her Michelle and then all of a sudden say "Oh, my real name is Mary Jane" I would have :whatever:

Oberhauser/Blofeld.

Yeah that's the only part of this news that makes me worried. Hopefully they go back in and fix it.

For me i have no problem with a black mary jane even tho they could of given her red hair but i digress my main problem is zendaya said in an interview that her character is very dry and really awkward which is nothing like MJ ,she also by set photos has a very mousy, shy, timid look which is also nothing like MJ.

if your gonna change the comicbook race then you better nail the personality of the character which it doesn't sound like they are

michael b jordan(Johnny Storm),laurence fishburne(Perry White),michael clark duncan(Kingpin) despite being a different race nailed their characters personality

Why are her eyes red? Is she powered in this?

IDA. The writing for him was awful and unlike Johnny. He was way too broody and moody as Johnny and didnt nail the fact that the character was supposed to be fun

Those I can agree with you. I was really surprised by Will Smith's Deadshot too. Never had I ever considered him for the role.

Maybe she's lying about her character's traits in order to deflect suspicions.
