Things you HATE, Volume II

I hate yahoo news comments. Every article does not have to do with Obama. A story about some kid winning a spelling bee (hypothetical) has nothing to do with Obama.

I stopped reading comments on news sites when I realised I was losing IQ points every time.

I hate it when people tell stories about their pets. I don't give a damn about what your stupid cat did the other day.

I hate people that say they don't watch tv. Your entire existence offends me.

I don't have a problem that specifically, but everyone I met who said that are the most pretentious *****ebags on earth. I hate that people think they're automatically better than other people because they don't watch much tv.

I hate people that don't care about the environment. They are in for a big surprise as climate change is coming sooner than we all think.

Groucho Marx once said "I think tv is very good for the intellect. Every time someone puts on the television I go into the other room and read a book." I don't know if he could be called pretentious, I think he just did not like tv.
Let's be honest, most tv is just junk, a lot of fun, but you don't really learn much from it, it's real life condensed into quick easy answers. I'm talking about the drama here, yeah, it may teach you stuff now and again, but nothing like a good insightful book where the author can delve deeply into the psyche of people and life in general. It takes real intelligence to write a good book, tv writing is relatively easy, and I bet is done by a lot of people who are not that insightful really.
I had an English teacher who did not own a tv, she was the most unpretentious person you could meet, really nice, smart, caring, when i got expelled from school she went to bat for me and tried to get permission for me to attend a play with the class I had already got a ticket for, but no go, lol.
I don't think it's that big a deal to say you don't like tv, some people just don't go for it, or are trying to keep their brains in top shape, most tv is just junk, c'mon, it's fast food, with some exceptions.

Interesting fact; when novels started becoming a big thing, people were up in arms that children were reading. They should be playing outside, not wasting their time with silly books!

Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

I don't know, I think that is a different kind of fear. If kids get cut off from normal human interactions, there will be a problem later in their development. Whereas comparing books to tv is more about how people spend their time exploring ideas about the world from educated, outside sources.
All most tv does is switch off the brain, and kill time for you, whereas even a crap book will light up your brian a bit and have it do some work.
I do think there is a problem with kids playing computer games far too much, I have seen it myself within my own family, it becomes an addiction like any substance abuse, and in the long term has a detrimental effect on physical health, as well as social development.

I'll tell you what though, 'adult' tv is good for kids, much better than kid's tv. A kid growing up watching something like 'Seinfeld' or 'Friends' will pick up things about human relationships that will be more beneficial to their development than anything that is taught in Sesame street or in school.

I heavily disagree with this.

Well, this is the way I was thinking of it, I don't know if you are thinking along different terms.
Ok, let's take 'Friends', and I am talking about small children learning about adult relationships, not teenagers. The stories are laid out very simply, like a kid's reading book in school, not complicated, peppered with laughs to keep the kid's interested, but they also have their serious moments with the interpersonal relationship drama. So a kid can learn about the existence of things like homosexuality, infidelity, divorce, falling in love, losing your job, falling out with your friends, not knowing your mother/father, being adopted....they get the basics done in a serious manner, and will pay attention as they are entertained by the humour throughout the show.
'Friends' is probably a better example than 'Seinfeld' actually.

But I don't understand how you think this, when you state that "TV turns off the brain" while decrying Sesame Street, which teaches Maths and the Alphabet to small children, but then praising a show like Friends which is a sitcom.

I said 'most tv', not all tv turns off the brain, but for the most part it is a way to relax without taxing your brain too much.
For adults, who are already out there interacting with the adult world, that is what Friends is, but of course they may be reminded of, of pick up on, some values or life lessons from the show. But for small children, it can be a gateway into learning all about the complex reality of the adult world, as it is a fairly uncomplicated show.

And in the context of what I was saying it made sense about Sesame St, I only said Sesame street was no good for showing interpersonal human relationships, not anything about maths and spelling. The adults in the show all act like children, talking in high pitch, soothing voices and whatnot, not acting real etc. If an adult only allowed their kid to watch Sesame Street, and let's say the kid got lost at the shopping mall, they might not be best prepared for interacting with strange random adults, than they might be if they watched 'Friends'.

But it's not the prerogative of a young child to be able to act properly on it's own in public. Children, ideally, should not be lost.

What I'm talking about is the kid not being so scared of the world if it has a better understanding of it.

and as for Sesame st, I have often wondered exactly how effective that show has been over the years in educating children with maths and spelling, it is, or at least was, a great show, don't get me wrong, but it's reallly only beneficial in those areas to pre-school children, and the show goes by so fast I don't know how much of that they would pick up.
Spelling and maths is what kids get in school , day after day for years, that is pretty much covered, but if they watched something like Friends, they would get educated on things that school does not cover so well, if ever.
I bet there is a whole generation out there who were in fact educated on such adult matters by that show in particular.

i hate working above my pay grade and not getting the pay i deserve for it

That my daughter is well over 24 hours old & still doesn't have a name.

you're literally always so damn negative. Just be happy you have a happy baby girl.

I am happy. It's just that everyone keeps asking. ANd I hoped we'd be able to finalize it today but as it turns out, major surgery & heavy painkillers tend to impair a woman's conversational skills. SOmeone suggested "Rayna" after seeing her pic & I'm considering it.

Customers who come in at 11:00 at night on Christmas Eve and get pissed that we're out of half the stuff in the electronics department. Don't wait until literally the last possible minute then!

Being judged by people who don't know me. Yes, I have feelings, and yes, it is hurtful and offensive.
