I remember the VERY FIRST thing I said to my pops after watching The Matrix for the first time way back in the day that it was gonna be the next Star Wars. It had the potential but dropped the ball

^^ I wouldn't say it dropped the ball completely, but it's DEFENITELY not in par with Star Wars. I still think the Matrix is awesome though.

I remember flipping through the channels recently and a Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy commercial was on and Billy re-enacted the end of Empire Strikes Back while hanging on the TV antenna on the roof.

30 years from now let's see if there are references to these other movies.

The Listed Trilogies:

Star Wars Prequel Trilogy - technically, this IS the next Star Wars but I am guessing your looking for opinions on what will be the next film series still big in 30, 40, and 50 & beyond years. Honestly, I don't think whatever it is will come along until Star Wars is officially done.

The Matrix Trilogy - a little bit ahead of it's time perhaps and maybe released too closely together. If it had been released at a time when Star Wars was officially dead and perhaps over 5-7 years instead of 4 with 2 in the same year then maybe it is the next Star Wars... if released in 2035.

Halo Trilogy - Star Wars introduced the world to the possibilities of what could be going on out in space. This movie would just be expanding upon that, it's not breaking any new ground. What it does have going for it is that the next Star Wars might not be a movie at all, rather just a video game. Of course there are around a dozen or so other titles that are vying for that spot.

Avatar - it really did break some good 'new ground' but it did it with technology as opposed to story and settings which, ultimately, are what a movie needs most.

The Lord of the Rings - definitely a memorable trilogy that will surely be around for many years, if it's not overplayed. It's not the next Star Wars though, simply because - Star Wars was not finished.

Harry Potter - I still haven't seen any of these movies and the fact that I have no interest in doing so should probably be enough to know... it's not the next Star Wars because if it were I'd be interested in seeing it.

Twilight Saga - I have less interest in this than I do in Harry Potter.

Iron Man, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy, X-Men, Nolan's Batman Trilogy, The whole Marvel Cinematic Universe, Green Lantern - These all cross each other out. The mass influx of comic book/superhero movies will prevent any of them from being the next great trilogy.

Pirates of the Caribbean - No.

So what do I think is the next Star Wars? To my dismay, it may be a little thing called World of Warcraft - and it's not a movie. Thankfully, there is still a chance that, like The Matrix, it to is a bit ahead of it's time. Could it be the the sole purpose of The Matrix coming into existence was/is to keep World of Warcraft down? This world may never know.

A movie about Warcraft will tend to be too violent and non-family-friendly imo...

No I did not play WoW so I apologise... but I have seen the cinematics where people are cutting each other up and stuff.

I'm not meaning it to be a movie at this time. Just like the transition that took place from book to film, the next transition may be from film to computer games and such. World of Warcraft would be the summing up of that transition which could essentially render it 'the next Star Wars,' from that perspective.

World of Warcraft is an odd dynamic in that, yes it does have it's violent side BUT there is also a 'cute and fluffy bunny' side to it. It's that odd dynamic that I believe makes it something that is introducing something new.

Judging by all the little kids I see running around with lightsabers, I gotta say-- this generation's Star Wars is definitely Twilight.

I don't see a lot of kids running around shirtless or with a shimering face.

About WoW, there was rumor of a movie floating around and at one time Sam Raimi was attached to it ( maybe not officially ).

WoW is nowhere close to having the cultural impact any of the other movie series we've talked about, let alone Star Wars.

12 million paying subscribers say otherwise, and this is WITHOUT as many people having computer access as do to movie theater's.

That said, a World of Warcraft movie would have to be pretty revolutionary, if it is to have any chance, given that:

A. it would be another video game adaptation to most and we know how that has gone so far.

B. we've already seen a Lord of the Rings trilogy and soon The Hobbit.

I've soured on the game play, but I will say this... it's story is fantastic and I haven't even read it. Very expansive and very in-depth and there are few holes from what I see.

I don't see kids dressing up as Dark Elf Clerics for holloween, or running around their yards fighting each other with sticks over 4 stam 4 strength leather belts.

Whadda ya' mean? Kids been dressing up as elves and clerics for decades?

And that pretty much answer's the question of what it will take to make something 'the next Star Wars.' Introducing a new idea, a new setting, and new 'things'(i.e. storm troopers, ewoks, jedi, death stars, the aluminum falcon, etc.)

In my opinion it'll happen someday, but could be awhile still.

It's kind of funny that Lord of the Rings get so many votes as "this generation's Star Wars". I mean, the books were published long before the first Star Wars movie was made. I think it would be more appropriate to give the title to a story/franchise created after Star Wars. In many ways I feel Avatar is this generation's Star Wars. Both were original movies in the meaning none of them were based on a popular book or something. Both are science-fiction movies leaning toward fantasy. And both the first Star Wars and Avatar became the biggest money maker of all time upon release.

I remember when Pirates 2 - 3 were released and people were like "this" is our Star Wars. I felt so bad for them. :(
