Thomas Jane pulls out of Punisher 2!!!!!!

I always thought the scene that really struck it home for me that Jane was a great Punisher was when he is eating in the cafe, and Harry Heck walks in, just sits down with the guitar case, Jane's face showed real emotion and expression and the way he coldly stared as he reached for his gun. Brillaint acting.

The Punisher doesn't need a big budget.
Not saying it needs to be a big budget.:cwink: The Punisher doesn't have any super powers so as the first movie proved it can be done without much or any CGI unlike other Marvel characters. I'd imagine though that the sequel (a bigger story set in NY) will be tough to accomplish with just 33 million dollars.
I mean people just keep forgetting over and over again that it opened up against Kill Bill 2. Anybody with half a brain can see it just needs a good opening day.
They had all the time to move the release date away from Kill Bill but they didn't. Who's to blame for that? Many foresaw that that movie was going to be a hurdle.

Yeah nobody said a big budget but it does need a bigger budget. It only had 17 million left to shoot the film after the talent was paid...that's crap for a film that really needs to have some fireworks. 40-50 million would be perfect as long as they don't have to pay 10 million for a Travolta hack job.

Without Jane the franchise is screwed, LGF might as well kill the script right now.

Well I am actually saying that they could actually do a sequel with the budget they had for the first one. They just need the TIME to figure out how to do things. That is another problem they had with the first film no time.

Yeah I know they had all the time to move the release date who said they didnt? It was a really dumb move on their part. If LGF had just given the proper time and a decent opening day the movie would have done alot better mark my words.

I agree AD. They could have gotten a better actor for the half the price IMO.But I guess they were really just looking for a name to put on the poster.

^ The name didn't help in theatres but I think it really helped sell the DVD's. However...I want a better film. Lionsgate has to start filming now or lose the rights so we will get a Punisher film soon...hopefully it's not as bad as it might seem it could be.

When would Marvel get the rights back AD? I wonder if Jane would come back if that happened. Another good thing about the Punisher is that age is not much of a factor. Jane could play the character well into his 50's.

I rather see LGF lose the rights to Marvel on the sequel than to have them do a movie that has a rushed script, and having somebody else to play The Punisher. Whoever is playing that part might not play a good of a part as well as Jane. Even if that person is good as Jane, the movie will be terrible becuse LGF is not focused much on this movie, along with a rushed script, and rushed filming is even worse. So I hope LGF loses the rights to Marvel. And just maybe if Marvel got the movie and a good script, maybe Jane might come back. We just have to wait and see until next year. We just have to be patient.

Hm. Sounds like a smart guy to me. I hate ****ty/rushed sequels to decent/good movies (i.e. the Hills Have Eyes 2).

Now if Tarantino, Rodriguez, Del Toro, or any director who can make a successful dark graphic novel-based movie would step up to the plate, Jane may reconsider. Until then, no thanks on a Punisher sequel.

I believe 2009.

Wow, that sounds very good.

It was KillBill who moved there release date from Feb to April. But I would like to know how these things are done. How much time they have to move a film's release date and when they can't.

I'm pretty certain that if Marvel got the rights back they'd be talking to Jane and Hensleigh instantly....and either making it with alternative financing or sell it to Sony.

That'd be the best way to go.

Well they've had oodles of time to figure that out for nr.2 - more than 3 years.

Unfortunately we'll never know for sure now now will we?:o

The filming budget of the last film was 17 million. 16 million left over was for all the paychecks to cast, director, producers, etc...Also they didn't have all the time in the World. They moved their date once and they got moved in on by bigger productions...it costs money to move it. They probably figured it would stand up to Kill Bill with Travolta and the comic book crowd. And they'd feed off each other. Guess not.

I just heard about Jane being gone from Punisher, I could care less. I didn't think he was tough enough as Frank. I don't like the crap movie they made anyway, they set it in florida, what the hell was that?! So stupid, if there's any character that needed to be on the tough and gritty streets of NewYork it was the Punisher.

And why change it at all. I have had it with all the dumb changes to comic characters and plot, etc., in the films. So I could care less about this movie, 2 doesn't seem to be happening anyway, I always hear how they're fighting to get it made, I mean what the hell's so hard about it? They made one some people liked it so make another.

You're probably the ONLY person on these boards who didn't like his portrayal.

You wanna know why it wasn't set in NYC? Here's why...$$$$

The MAIN problem is fighting to get it made RIGHT. Tom Jane wants a true Punisher film. John Dahl the director they hired wants a true Punisher film. The only ones who don't, for whatever reason? Lionsgate.

The 2nd one was going to be everything you wanted...

It was gonna be violent, it was gonna be in New York, it was gonna be Gritty.

THIS is what Tom Jane (a now hardcore Punisher fan) wanted...Lionsgate didn't, hence why he took off.

NOW there are reports that the director they tapped to direct the sequel, John Dahl, bounced as well--for the very same reasons...he, like Jane wants a hardcore Punisher movie, the studio doesnt.

spiderbat is one of those fanboys that wants every single detail from a comic to be translated to the big screen...He was probably looking for Yellow Spandex on Wolverine.

Right now, it sounds like there’s one actor who Snyder likes for the part, but I’m not at liberty to divulge his identity yet. Let’s just say it’s a “punishing” choice, and the actor brings a lot of comic book credibility to the role if he ends up playing it.

Oh really... :oldrazz:

They had to film the movie in Tampa for budgetary reasons, because Punisher was a very low-budget movie. Since Tampa looks nothing like New York, they decided not to try to pretend that it was New York. Simple.

I’m writing to tell you that I regretfully and painfully had to pull out of P2. I can’t tell you how completely broken up I am about it. After busting my ass at the gym four days a week for almost two years, watching every character driven action pic that any fan would ask me to watch while I was standing in line buying egg whites and Tuna fish (Leon the Professional, Oldboy, The Seven-Ups (GREAT flick), Point Blank, Escape from NY, The Driver, Magnum Force, The Mechanic, The Great Silence, Sexy Beast, Nighthawks, Cry Vengeance (check it out), Road Warrior, Man on Fire, Outlaw Josey Wales, Rocky (think about it), Serpico, etc etc etc.) after countless Saturday nights making notes and drinking soda water and munching on seaweed sticks while my daughter slept on my lap to the sound of automatic gunfire, (now she can’t sleep without it. I had to make a tape of automatic gunfire to play in her room at night) after hauling myself to any ‘Guns! Knifes! Ammo!’ show in any small town that I found myself in shooting Killshot or The Mist or Mutant Chronicles, after torn ligaments, screwed up rotator cuffs, thousands of $$$ on ridiculously huge vitamins, overly long conversations with frighteningly tall men about The Fastest Way To Kill Someone With Your Bare Hands, and after a dude refused to sell me a Fatburger at 2am on Santa Monica Blvd, I am, sadly – no, make that heartbrokenly – **** it - just rip out the heart and stomp it into the pavement a couple of times – pulling out. Punisher fans are already fighting an uphill battle as it is. And I’ve always felt a responsibility to fight that fight for them and with them so that Frank Castle gets the treatment he deserves. I'm sharing this with you because I know you're a fan, like me, and you've got your ear to the ground, and because we seem to share the same sort of taste and passion when it comes to movies and stories that get us off. What I won't do is spend months of my life sweating over a movie that I just don't believe in. I’ve always loved the Marvel guys, and wish them well. Meanwhile, I’ll continue to search for a film that one day might stand with all those films that the fans have asked me to watch.

Sincerely,
Thomas Jane

Sucks. :csad:

But then again...I never saw the sequel coming off the ground anyway.
gee this sucks. I hope there still is a 2nd movie though. Couldn't he have just used a muscle suit for the movie? use more cgi and more stuntmen?

Well this was unexpected. I loved Jane in that role and it's hard to imagine too many other actors working.
