Thor: Love and Thunder | Official News and Speculation Thread

I'm not quite sure what Jane Foster's role is going to be in the movie. I know there was reports that she was going to be taking on the Thor mantle but during an interview for Jojo Rabbit, the interviewer asked who was going to be the "star" of Thor love and thunder, was it Chris or Natalie, and Taika looked surprise at the question and said it was Chris.

Interviewer: Who's the star of Love and Thunder? Like who is it? Is it Natalie? Is it Chris?

Taika: It's Chris. It's a Thor film, he is Thor. It's a Thor film. She's in it.

Link to the video below. Thor Question is at the 8 minute mark.

Oh right. I had thought she was going to be the star of it. That was quite clear in the video, assuming he wasn’t deadpanning.

I think Natalie Portman was drawn to T4 primarily because of the possibility of working with Taika. If i'm not mistaken even Feige said as much a while back. Also i would guess that the possibility of donning the mantle of Thor and tackling a "meaty" subject as the cancer storyline is almost too good to give a pass.
Yeah I really wouldn’t be surprised if the cancer storyline and the weight of a topic like that and the acting focus required as a result was a big selling point for her.

I've clearly missed a bit of news. What cancer storyline?

Wouldn't that be a bit of a grim storyline for an otherwise light hearted movie?
Have you not seen Waititi’s last two non-CBM films? The guy loves to make comedies around grim/sad subject matter.

I've seen Jojo Rabbit (Great film) but they're not set in the MCU. "Hey Thor! You're ex-girlfriend has cancer and will either die or get magically cured by the end of the movie!" isn't something you can really make a joke about. Jojo Rabbit poked fun at Nazism, it didn't make fun of the holocaust and kind of avoided touching on that specific subject.

I don't want to get into spoilery plot-specifics of JoJo, but I don't think it avoided the horrors of that setting at all. It absolutely joked about things you wouldn't think he could or should make a joke about. And if he can make jokes about those things that actually terrorized people in real life in one of the darkest times in our history, he can certainly make jokes about Thor's ex-girlfriend fighting her illness by becoming a superhero and stealing his thunder, so to speak.

Jane could also be that type of character who doesn’t want her sickness to be a source of depression and darkness. There are definitely ways on how to handle that topic with care and the right mix of seriousness and humor. I mean, when you think about it, there are themes in Ragnarok too that are serious and depressing and yet most of us would classify the film as comedic overall.

And not that they have the same comedic style at all, but Seth Rogan & Co. made a whole comedy about a guy fighting cancer. Without any hammers or superhero silliness, and yet, it was still funny. It also had great serious emotion at times and I assume this will too. Taika's good at that stuff as well, imo.

Just in time for Valentine's day.
I'm sure some of the themes in the movie will be suited to that date.

That‘ll be very risky at the moment. Taika and his staff couldn‘t write a Valentines theme into it, if they could start filming in the second half of 2021 and it will be delayed again.
It could be used for marketing like Black Panther
Btw Valentines Day isn’t a big deal outside the USA and probably UK

I definitely think that by placing the date of the movie in around that specific time in February means they are thinking about capitalizing on some themes of the movie.

The movie is called “Love & Thunder”. They are bringing Thor’s “old flame” back and they have signed a co-writer to work on the script that has a very telling body of work regarding relationships...

If I had to guess looking at Ragnarok and what we know so far, TLT is possibly going to be to be an action, adventure movie sprinkled with elements of romance/drama. It’s not like they are making a specific movie for Valentine’s Day either, but thematically it makes sense to drop it around that time, they could be using it as a way to bump it’s interest and importance.

The US and the UK are 2 of the biggest BO markets. That’s plenty of motif to try and bank on those dates. Not to mention that Valentine’s Day is also important in many other european countries.

It would‘ve been a movie with love as central element, if it kept its original date in october. It won‘t be rewritten, because it now starts around Valentine‘s Day.

Exactly. I didn’t say otherwise.

The film has Hemsworth and Bale for the ladies, Portman and Thompson for the gents, and all 4 of them for the in-betweens. That’s enough motivation for a Valentines date even if there’s not a single “love” element (and we know there will be!). :p

I still don‘t see Thor and Doctor Strange being released 1 month apart from esch other.
One of them will get the July-date from Captain Marvel, which will be moved to October.
Should they delay Multiverse 3 months again for the third time or Love & Thunder.
This will probably depend which one ties into Black Panther 2. Right now I can‘t see none of them having s connection to BP, but maybe Namor or Doom will be introduced in some way in Multiverse.

Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waitit looks on the positive side of the movie's release date delay | GamesRadar+
"No, I can’t. I can’t at all," Waititi says when asked about whether he can discuss Thor: Love and Thunder by our sister publication Total Film magazine in the upcoming issue. "But the other thing is, there are a few positive things I can take away [from the Covid-19 crisis]. One of them is that a lot of these films, and films in general, are rushed, or you don’t have as much time as you’d want to have on the script and things like that.

"We’re still writing Love And Thunder, and I think it’s good to just keep writing, and then you know, we’ll have a really, really good script. And with writing, especially, you should use as much of that time as possible to get your story right, because you never really get it later on. Film is an industry where you’re always complaining about not having enough time. I think, right now, we’ve given ourselves a huge amount of time to work on all sort of things, so we may as well use it."

With Taika being pretty good buddies with Ryan Reynolds, I can see Taika trying to get Ryan into this movie.
Certainly not as Deadpool, but probably a cameo.
Hell, he would be an awesome Beta Ray Bill.
He could be both like Benedict Cumberbatch is DS and Dormammu, if BRB and Deadpool ever cross paths in the MCU
And a Deadpool movie doesn‘t happen every year (if they happen again)

I don’t think he would be a good fit for BRB. I “picture” BRB voice to be deeper and rougher. Also I hope BRB is a more serious character which would serve as a better foil for Thor and Korg comedic banter.

I think it’s important to have some more serious characters, like Valkyrie for example, which helps to accentuate the comedic beats like it played out in Ragnarok.

I hope so too. But considering what he did to Korg I'm not super sure. Taika basically took his design and just completely reinvented the character from a serious guy to a half decent joke. I liked him in Thor Ragnarok well enough, but I'm a little sad that they used one of Hulk's most important arcs for fun and giggles. I get it's Taika's style, I just would've liked it more if he employed his style on different source material. Or better yet use the skills to make a story that's quirky, but still has emotional weight like he did with Jojo Rabbit. That's the Taika I want to see.

I just saw the first movie again.
The scenes in Asgard and Jotunheim were awesome and I really want to see more of the 9 realms. Pitty Asgard is destroyed and the Warriors are dead (except Lady Sif)

I hope L&T isn’t set too much on earth, because that was always the boring part in the Thor movies (Ragnarok had Doctor Strange in it, so it was more interesting)
I hope it goes more into norse mythology again, norse mythology influenced by Marvel of course
But I have faith in Taika

TLT marketing in full swing.
