Thread of the Tomb Raider

From Wikipèdia, Embracer Group has a lot of games released...but I don't think I've played any game from them....

Something like Tomb Raider would fit in nicely under PlayStation Studios. Then Thief/Deus eX with Microsoft's first person games.

Basically, a tiny publishing house called Nordic Games bought most of the THQ ip when THQ went completely bankrupt in the early 2010s. They rebranded themselves THQ Nordic, because THQ is a decades old name with some cachet. They then rebranded themselves Embracer Group after buying Koch Media/Deep Silver, in order to facilitate having multiple big studios under their umbrella. They pretty much specialize in western AA games.

Also, they are totally not buying these studios so they can sell them to someone else. Embracer Group is an up and coming publishing powerhouse in their own right, they are buying the IP so they can use it themselves.

Are Embracer going to give it the budget it needs or maybe partner with someone? Just hope this means we can get top quality Tomb Raider games going forward.

I imagine they will give a suitable budget for Tomb Raider, though "suitable" is not the same thing as "everything the studio wants and thinks it needs".

I'm sure it ties into Amazon owning MGM (which holds the Tomb Raider film rights).

Bummer that it will be yet another Unreal Engine 5 game after the stellar use of the Dawn engine on Shadow (which was also used for Guardians of the Galaxy). Fours years after release and that game still looks great.

Looking forward to the next game. Shadow is still sitting on my shelf unplayed but I will get around to it soon.

I have played nearly every one of the Tomb Raider games and it felt like a letdown with Shadow. Hopefully they get back to proper Tomb Raiding/exploration in the new game.

Hopefully they’ll be like what they’re like with rings of power where they just have buckets of money and they’re big nerds so they’re just like chuck all the money at it and don’t worry about a return

Amazon is only publishing, Crystal Dynamics is still the studio actually developing the game.

Its weird.

Amazon being attached to this is a bit of a red flag... like they don't have a good track with videogames iirc.

Warner Bros. Exit Talks Begin For ‘The Lord of the Rings’ & ‘The Hobbit’ Franchises (Exclusive) – Fellowship of Fans
Embracer Group just sold (update: leased) their ‘Tomb Raider’ rights to Amazon for a deal that we can exclusively reveal as being approximately a 600 Million overall package making it Amazon’s second biggest commitment after purchasing the television rights for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’. Therefore, this puts into perspective the cost and (updated) commitments that Embracer maybe looking for.

If true, Squeenix looking silly right now. :lmao:

Like they could have sold it to Sony....

Like what is Amazon Prime's track record with videogames.

Also Embracer selling it off right away after just acquiring it...

It was massively undervalued compared to all other game deals. So much IP and one of them huge. Plus I wouldn’t be surprised to see those studios doing well in future once they’ve been given support rather than thrown under the bus repeatedly. Current Square management are as incompetent as you get. A mere piece of the package they sold goes for considerably more by itself straight after lol.

Do we think future Tomb Raider games would be as good as reboot games though?

A Tomb Raider game developed by Amazon, doesn't give me any confidence.

I'm pretty stoked about the remaster, I know people have been hoping for a proper one of the classics for ages. I really like how the upgraded Lara model is basically the FMV model plus the lighting, and it sounds like there's gonna be lots of good quality of life stuff. Switching between the new HD models/textures with the originals if you want, all the expansion pack levels which haven't really been able to be played legally forever. I've never played any of the expansion pack levels so that's neat. Also interested to see the control stuff, there's gonna be the classic controls and a modern one.

Lmao! I can't at another trilogy remaster coming just now in the ps5 era.

Mass Effect
Grand Theft Auto
Metal Gear Solid
Tomb Raider

Like I said in the other thread, better late than never but still, it could have come out years ago.

I love being able to switch between the remastered graphics and the original, great to see how much visuals have moved on.

Coming out on Valentine's Day is nice too. I loved playing the originals back when they came out.
