no, it's how we can afford to do the dc showcase shorts AT ALL
like it or not, making cartoons costs money....the revenue generated by the shorts as "bonus features" on other films simply doesn't cover the cost of making them...the "double dip/compilation/extended edition/exclusive 20 minute anchor film" format was the only way we could monetize the production costs...and even THAT strategy is an economic roll-of-the-dice -- the jury's still out on whether or not the showcase project is something that's profitable enough to justify making more
it's not like warner bros. is sitting there wringing its hands, chortling "okay, we made a gazillion-jillion dollars off the first go-round of the shorts, let's figure out a way to get the suckers to buy them AGAIN, heh heh heh!"
it's too early to tell if any of this is going to pay-off -- frankly, i'm just grateful that WBHV was willing to take a chance on the initiative, because, honestly, they really didn't need to....but the bottom-line is, if the compilation doesn't sell well, it's pretty much a guarantee that we won't be making any more "dc showcase" shorts, it's really as simple as that
