Burton isn't as dark as people claim. Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, the first half of Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Mars Attacks, and Big Fish are light-hearted. And, Beetlejuice, while being "dark" was a comedy, a black comedy, but a comedy nonetheless. And you can say something similar about Sleepy Hollow. That movie was basically an action-comedy disguised as an 18th century horror movie. And, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory wasn't really dark at all. Nor Corpse Bride. Or Nightmare Before Christmas for that matter. Like, Beetlejuice, those were black comedies. Batman, Batman Returns, Planet of the Apes, and Sweeney Todd are the only serious and actually dark movies he's made. And even those had their light-hearted moments.
Point taken.
But Burton is always very strong in what he thinks. But even if the concept isn't dark, the sets, how it's shot, lit, the music, etc, all reflect Burton's sensibilities.
