Tim Burton's Dark Shadows

I just went to IMDb and they have Frankenweenie in production. Thats a stop-motion movie, so I wouldn't be surprised if he has been working on it for a while. And they have Alice listed for 2010.

Have you ever watched the 90's version starring Ben Cross as Barnabas Collins?

Anyways, can definitely see Johnny Depp as Barnabas. I hope Burton doesn't screw this up because I'd love to see a good movie based from this series. Helena Bonham Carter would make an excellent Angelique Bouchard.

I haven't but I'll give it a chance in a little bit. BTW did you ever see the Dark Shadows movie dan Curtis made in the 1970s with most of the original cast (no Quntin, Vicky or Angellique(sp?), unfortunately?). It was hammy and cheesy but fun. It was weird seeing them kill off 90% of the characters from the show that never seem to die or stay dead. Oh well.

ugh... no more depp...
i can see him playing another emo character all pale and stuff...

No more? He was surprisingly good and strong in Sweeney Todd and outside of his Jack Sparrow schtick has done Finding Neverland recently and has a Dillinger movie with Michael Mann coming out. Depp is a truly anamorphic actor. And him and Burton have had some great collaborations in the past (Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and Sweeney Todd are right at the top).

And this is a very interesting character, here.

I love Johnny Depp. And I love when he works with Burton. But this is like the fourth movie in a roll. That's too much. So...unless Frankenweenie and Alice are released before this I'm not liking the idea.

Don't know what to think about it. I haven't seen Sweeney Todd yet, but this project just sounds unintersting to me.

Alice in Wonderland is kind of different...more in the lines of Big Fish or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory...
Yeah I just head about Alice in Wonderland...now THATs something im excited for. It can be really really awesome...I hope he starts working on that one ASAP!

Btw, wtf!? Hes doing frankenstein!
I know that seems like the perfect Tim Burton movie but I just don't want that. Frankenstein is my favorite book ever and Burton is a great director but i dont see it working unless he uses a Sleepy Hallow approach.

This should be interesting indeed. The Depp/Burton duo usually delivers good stuff :woot:

He's doing Frankenweenie NOT Frankenstein.

Wow I finally watched those clips. Was that a soap like the original? Because the production values for any TV show on that were REALLY good. I also have to say I liked the tone of the show and the bleak meloncholy nature. Johanna Going, an actress I always liked and thought never quite found her way unfortunately, played an excellent Vicky/Jossette,

However, from those clips I think a big reason the show failed was the Barnabas was really poor. The original Barnabas is in my opinion one of the great television villains/anti-heroes and gives as compelling a performance as a vampire as almost any actor since Bela Lugosi to date. This guy just failed to measure up. Then Angelique was also notably subpar compared to the original classic witch villainess.

With that said it still looked like a damn entertaining show and after just watching those 15 minutes of video on youtube, do you have a link to the full show (how many seasons was it on)? It was rather well done and the only flaw I found in it was some bad casting. But the original Dark Shadows was the only good soap opera ever made (IMO), but this seemed to flow in its depressing fairy tale atmosphere very well.

On a side note the theme song used to introduce the show (and was in the 1970s movie version called House of Dark Shadows, starring most of the original cast from the show) will hopefully be incorporated into Tim Burton's movie. But I think the trick of Dark Shadows will be to tone down the expressionism and go for a more restrained horror movie that plays like a tragedy, but in a somewhat realistic world. I'm not saying it has to be set in our world and it shouldn't be, but it should be more of a world of mystery and something similar to what he did with Sweeney Todd except in "colonial" America.

P.S. I am much more interested by this than Alice in Wonderland. Alice in Wonderland he has done variations on the themes and concept several times now and I never was a major fan of the actual Alice story myself. With that said vampires and the macabre have also been a major factor in a number of Burton movies as well. But if he does Dark Shadows like I think he should and want him to (a bleak gothic fairy tale, what Coppola TRIED to do with Bram Stoker's Dracula) -- then we could be in for a different and really interesting movie.

Also, if you haven't seen Sweeney Todd get to it. Besides being Burton's most mature project to date -- it is easily his best movie in over a decade and I think the only movie he has done better is Ed Wood.

doing another Alice in Wonderland is like doing another Tarzan movie. it's overdone

Why? There hasn't been one good one yet...

The Disney version is probably the best and that one had subpar animation and left out many interesting aspects of the story.

How so? Other than like two tv movies, (both somewhat obscure, and one of them practically a friggin' musical) Alice in Wonderland hasn't been done in live action before. The only semi-definitive take on the story was the Disney cartoon, and they left a LOT out of that. A few years back when Disney was doing all those direct to dvd sequels I was really annoyed they never did a sequel to Alice (even if it might have sucked). It's the only book that I can think of that Disney has adapted that had a bonafide sequel, and in some ways Through the Looking Glass is the better story. I would love to see Tim Burton's take on the story. He can incorporate a lot of the darker stuff from the actual book that was left out of the cartoon. And if it's a success, maybe we might get Through the Looking Glass at some point too. I have my issues with Burton, but this book is right up his alley. The only thing that concerns me is Burton has been known to make changes to source material, but for some reason I get the impression he'd do a fairly faithful adaption.

I remember when I heard about the Alice movie being made based off the video game, I was initially bummed Tim Burton's name wasn't being thrown around. But finding out he's doing the actual book makes me even happier. Screw Narnia, a Tim Burton "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" would be a dream come true to me as long as he didn't take too many liberties with the actual story.

The only thing Disney's AiW left out was the Duchess, and the sea lion dude at the end. But they did bring in the Tweedles from Through the Looking Glass.

However, I don't think Burton will change much of the story, if he does, I think he'd change things the way he did Sweeny Todd, which were very minuscule.

And random question, besides a few characters in Nightmare Before Christmas, has Burton done anything with vampires yet? I can't think of any movie he's done with vampire other than NBC

It's been a while since I read the book, but I remember a couple key things being left out. I could be combining Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass as my copy has both in it. Nonetheless, I'd love to see a live action interpretation with Burton as a director. The style of his movies fit the book perfectly. I can only imagine how he'd interpret Wonderland, because in my opinion his biggest strength is his set design, and just how beautiful his movies look, and there is not a single story I can think of that could fit Burton's visual sensibilities better than Alice in Wonderland. His biggest weakness however, are the storylines in his movie. However, if he already has a good plot to work with, and the book is fairly accurately adapted, then Burton can do a great job with it.

And to my knowledge Burton has never really touched vampires before, but I'm not a huge Tim Burton fan so I may be mistaken.

I'm really excited about this one . My mother was a fan of Dark Shadows and when the vhs tapes came out i was able to watch it. It's now available on dvd. I know that Burton will be able to do adapt that universe to his on film very nicely. Depp always gives a good performance if you ask me . This is the perfect realm for them to work in .
Also Depp is a fan of the show and that s always a good way to start a project. I had heard they were working on this and it as a big maybe . Now that it's been confirmed I have something to look forward to .

My friend's mother was in a couple episodes of Dark Shadows, so I'm excited to see how things go with this.

Tim Burton's Next is Dark Shadows?
Source: Collider.com
December 3, 2008

Collider.com talked to producer Richard D. Zanuck, who says that director Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are making Dark Shadows next summer and that it's Tim's next project after Alice in Wonderland.

The film, written by John August, is based on the cult '60s supernatural TV show created by Dan Curtis. Johnny Depp would play Barnabas Collins, the vampire patriarch of the series.

With over 1,225 episodes, "Dark Shadows" was a highly atmospheric, spooky soap-opera that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves, ghosts and zombies that ran from 1966 - 1971 and featured actor Jonathan Frid as Collins.

Some more news... Depp seems very eager on this project and wants it to start shooting next year after Burton comes off Alice In Wonderland...

For those that can't watch the video:

Depp: 'Dark Shadows is happening'

Johnny Depp has confirmed that the movie Dark Shadows should begin filming next year.

The Public Enemies star said that he and Tim Burton will collaborate again for the big screen adaptation of the supernatural-based '60s soap opera, which ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971.

He told Collider: "Dark Shadows is happening. Tim is working on Alice In Wonderland which is obviously quite a large piece of work there.

"So when Tim is done with Alice and we get the script, which is very, very close, in order we’ll probably attack it next year."

Depp described playing vampire Barnabas Collins is "a lifelong dream", saying: "It’s exciting, very exciting... I loved the show when I was a kid. I was obsessed with Barnabas Collins. I have photographs of me holding Barnabas Collins posters when I was five or six."

Dark Shadows will mark the eighth teaming between the actor and director, with latest collaboration Alice In Wonderland opening in cinemas on March 5, 2010.
