Well, that seems a tad timid and apologetic.
The fact is, it’s hard to find a serious film critic or a reputable film journal that doesn’t list
2001 in their top 10 movies of all time (in some cases it’s #1).
2001 is art. And not all art is easily accessible. (Other films in the top 10 might include Eisenstein’s
Battleship Potemkin, Fellini’s
8½ or Ozu’s Tokyo Story. And those aren’t “easy” movies either.)
Another point.
2001 was filmed in 70mm SuperPanavision. And lucky folks have seen it in this format - a truly immersive experience where “content” was inextricably linked to “form.” Watching
2001 now on video is certainly better than nothing. But it’s something akin to screening
Avatar on an iPhone and being confused as to what all the fuss is about.
