The only other writer to do a good Thanos is Keith Giffen.

Yeah the Thanos Annual was fun. Wish I could say the same thing about pt 2 of that GotG prelude. The writing was bad and the artwork was really bad. Probably a rush job.

Josh Brolin is an exciting choice man, he even fits the bill facial structure wise

Change this thread to Josh Brolin IS Thanos, lest you incur his wrath.

It's a double-bluff. Benecio Del Toro is playing Thanos who is disguised as The Collector, and Josh Brolin is playing the real Collector.

But yeah, after last Friday's news, it's nice to see something from Marvel to get everyone talking in a good way today. :)

Keep on ****tin on El Mayimbe people, another scoop he got right........

Ahh right lol. Thought we was talking a forgotten rumour from a while ago.

So, now that the casting for Thanos seems to have been announced and we can start thinking of the Mad Titan as a more concrete, tangible presence in the MCU... let's talk about how you go about portraying him.

I've loved Thanos since I was a kid, going back to his various cartoon/video game appearances and some occurrences of him showing up in comics back at that time.... though it's only been over the past couple of years that I've read some of the Jim Starlin stuff and come to fully appreciate the character's awesomeness. For me, Thanos is THE Marvel Universe villain. Bigger than Doom, Magneto, Red Skull, any of them. He's the Biggest of Big Bads. And with the direction the shared universe of the films seems to be taking, especially with Doom and Magneto owned by Fox and Loki shifting into anti-hero territory, Thanos is clearly being set up as THE overarching villain of the whole MCU too. What do Marvel do to make him special?

Loki is, of course, excellent. He was already another of my favourite comic villains, and Tom Hiddleston must be commended for extending his popularity to a whole new demographic of fans. But he's so charismatic that one is left wondering what MCU's other villains can do to stand out from the crowd. Then you consider that Age of Ultron is likely going to give us in Ultron a heavy-hitter who can take on the whole of the Avengers by himself, so that angle won't even be new.

Perhaps the key is to underscore just how evil he is. Truly emphasize how horrifying in scope and brutality his plans and ambitions are, to make us frightened of him ever getting enough power to realise those goals. Really emphasize his Machiavellian qualities, too. Some cues could be taken from recent TV villains like Mads Mikkelson's Hannibal Lecter or Billy Bob Thornton's Lorne Malvo from Fargo - primal forces of evil who cause great pain to others or manipulate them into doing terrible things apparently for their own amusement, and/or as microscopic cogs in a massively complex agenda that it's impossible to make out in full from the close angle we're looking at it in the moment.

I think Marvel should take their inspiration for Thanos's portrayal from the Superhero Squad Show. :D

How about going a bit "lovecraftian" with him. Like, he is a corrupting force of evil throughout the entire universe. Not just personally making deals and manipulating people. But he is the very essence of evil personified. With a twisted almost religious devotion to death.

I love that issue of Silver Surfer, where Thanos takes the Surfer on a guided tour of the universe and calmly, rationally explains to him that he's actually a necessary evil, as life is teeming and getting out of control across the cosmos, and he is an Agent of Death whose mission is to restore the balance. And when Surfer asks how he proposes to do this, Thanos replies:

"Euthanasia. By killing off 50 percent of this universe's population... I merely cut away the cancer to save the patient."

Great casting. Brolin has a strong voice, but he's not just some meathead. He can deliver a degree of subtlety in his Thanos. I'm excited about this news.

Agreed!

Not the voice I envisioned for the role, so meh for now. Marvel is 0 for 3 with voice casting for this film from what I imagine in my head when these characters speak.

Fantastic news,I can't wait to hear him in the role!!

I think Brolin's got a good, deep voice which should give Thanos gravitas. I've not actually got any problem with Bradley Cooper either. But even if you didn't like those two, how could how have a problem with Vin Diesel as the voice for Groot? What could be a better fit for the voice of a gentle giant than the voice of The Iron Giant?

This casting, I like it! Brolin is a really good actor, not worried about the line delivery. And his voice fits too.

Just realised that Thanos, Scarlet Witch and Nick Fury have all been in the same film :P
