No it wasn't, but apparently Tobey tried to make it seem like he had more knowledge of the comics than he actually did. And that could possibly be appealing to Raimi. Who knows? I'm not going to sit here and argue about it. If you watch all the videos of the Comic Con press conference, there is a part where Tobey and Raimi joke about the fact that Tobey made it seem as if he knew more about the Spider-Man comics than he actually did.

I dont know why you're complaining because Maguire has made it clear that he never read a spidey comic prior to filming the 1st spidey movie.

Old news. He doesnt say he wouldn't he just says he might not. He probably wants more money, plus I am pretty sure Sam Raimi and The Hobbit isnt true.

You acknowledge it's a joke near the end of your post, but your first sentence kind of indicates that you might actually think Tobey lied to Sam in order to get this role. Well for one thing, Tobey's not much on lying. He'll say nothing before telling an untruth publically. And secondly, can't you recognize humour when you see it? Knowledge of the comics had diddly squat to do with Sam choosing Tobey for the role. Sam very much wanted Tobey in the role. He fought for him and urged the studio to hire him because after seeing Tobey's performance in Cider House Rules, he was convinced that Tobey was THE guy who could bring his vision of Peter Parker to the screen.
