Franco and Dunst Comment on the Spider-Man Reboot

Source:E! Online
January 22, 2010

What do James Franco and Kirsten Dunst, who played Harry Osborn and Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi's Spidey trilogy, think about the Spider-Man reboot?

Talking to E! Online, Franco says that he doesn't have a problem with it. "It worked out well for Batman, and comics themselves have different artists and writers. I think it's perfectly fine."

He did add, however, that he thinks "for the viewers you want a little space [between Raimi's and Webb's flicks], so you can get everyone else out of your head."

Dunst said it is "sad to see it end. I think for Sam it was time for him to move on, and so we're all going to move on with him. But we've had a good 10 years."

Franco: It might be a little soon, but there's potential for it to be a positive.

Dunst: I'll sure miss that paycheck.

Yeah, comics have different artists and writers, but they don't usually go back to issue 1 whenever a creative team changes.

That's true, but movie franchises are way bigger than comic books. The previous series of films had become so beloved by so many people, a lot of which don't even read comics, that it would only be negative for the new cast and crew if they had to follow what Raimi and Co. did. It's best for them to be able to start over and do their own version.

Franco was good in the movies, his end was way off and the Raimi loved the chemistry between Maquire and Dunst. I wish them all the best.

JK Simmons and Rosemary Harris tend to disagree.

Franco was solid in part 1, ****** in part 2, and so-so in part 3.

He's grown as an actor since then though.

I think Franco did a great job in S3 despite the material he had to work with. Before S3 came out I actually wasn't sure if he could pull off being a villain and I figured putting in extra villains would make up for his shortcomings but watching him in S3 makes me wish the movie was just about Harry.

Franco is right about letting the audience be able to actually forget the original cast

2 and a half years sure is not long enough lol

they seem half and half about it. It's truly sad to see this series go. Truly sad and i agree with Franco about it being too soon. It really is TOO soon.

LOL. My thoughts exactly, especially for Dunst.

Thankfully it's not then. It's at least a 5 year difference from SM3 to the new reboot.

I thought aunt may delivered the best performance (with her 'hero' monologue)

Eh, we really should have an 'uncomfortable shudder' emoticon on this site. You know, the kind of shudder Homer Simpson would give whenever he heard that his sisters-in-law were coming over.:cwink:

I'm not a fan at all of a Spidey-loving Aunt May.

I personally like a spidey loving aunt may. the best thing JMS did (did doesn't excuse the disgracful things he did) was make aunt may find out about peter, she evolved as a character instead of being a one note moaner.

dupe post - thank to SHH lag.

Dunst hasn't been very enthusiastic about the Spidey movies since before SM2. I'm sure she misses the paycheck, but she doesn't miss playing MJ. She never really had a lot of good things to say about the character.

So good riddance -- bring on some new younger talent. How about a real redhead this time?

Exactly. A much better story/conflict when Aunt May is NOT Spidey's biggest fan.

To me it's just an annoyance. Aunt May means alot to Peter, so for her to hate his alter ego makes us, the audience not like her. Raimi got it right by having May believe in Spider-Man.

still not long enough
5 years is plenty if you think about it. That's an entire life at one educational institution (elementary/hs/college). People that were young teens growing up on Raimi would be young adults by then.

Was she a fan since part 1? I don't remember. I'd like May to start out as not being the biggest fan of Spidey, because she doesn't like Peter to get himself into danger by taking pics of super battles, but not outright hate Spidey.

Then throughout the Movies she starts to dislike Spidey less. Something I definitely don't want is another Spidey-day.

I agree, 5 years is fine. TIH did it in 5 years, BB in 7 or 8 years and those film's predecessor's were hated way more than SM3. The next Spidey film has less of a hurdle to clear after the poor reception to the last one than Batman or the Hulk had to.
