Did you not see the second trailer? Because I hadn't when I saw the movie and it was pleasant surprise for me when it happened.

I only saw the first one too and like you, I was pleasantly surprised that it was more than that.

This was very good. Hanks was fantastic, especially at the end, but damned if Barkhad Abdi didn't nearly steal the show. What a find that guy was. Hope he gets some recognition come awards time, too.

Based on the events that took place aboard the MV Maersk Alabama in April 2009,the film
Captain Phillips is involving and intense even though most of the world including myself
knows how everything played out.

One of the things i liked an appreciated about the film is the fact that it shows us all sides of the story
from Phillips home life and concerns about the future of his children,to the Somolian pirates and how
they are rounded up and chosen to hijack ships,to the tactics used by the Navy and the Navy Seals.

Hanks is terrific as Phillips ,trying to remain cool calm and collected even though the situation is
bleak. He completely immerses himself in the role which makes it award worthy.
The first time actors who portray the pirates are good, Barkhad Abdirahman as Bilal Faysal Ahmed as Najee and
Mahat M. Ali as Elmi, but Barkhad Abdi as Muse, the hijacker leader is outstanding. He wont be tricked or wavered from his course even though it starts to become a futile one.

Director Paul Greengrass has created a mesmerizing thriller and one of the best films of 2013

Despite opening to a strong $26 million this weekend, the Tom Hanks starrer Captain Phillips has found itself in hot water: The real crew from the Maersk Alabama that was taken by Somali pirates state that the film account of their hijacking was less based on a true story and far more an account of revisionist historical fiction.

According to eleven crew members who filed suit against Maersk and the Waterman Steamship Corporation in both Alabama and Texas for "willful, wanton and conscious disregard for their safety", they felt their lives were recklessly endangered by the real Captain Richard Phillips in the days leading up to their April 2009 hijacking. (Phillips is being used as a witness for the defense in both lawsuits.)

The crew members allege that Phillips ignored their pleas to sail further away from the Somali coast, which had already been home to 16 pirate attacks and eight hostage situations in the three weeks prior to their hijacking. He also flouted the anti-piracy plan distributed to all ships by the International Maritime Organization, that suggests crew cut the lights and power on ships and lock themselves below deck if pirates get too close.

Phillips has admitted to receiving at least seven emails while on board, advising ship captains about the increased piracy in the area and advising ships to move at least 600 miles off the coast. But Phillips kept his ship just 240 miles off the coast instead.

The crew member who spoke to the New York Post goes on to say that the ship was actually attacked twice, rather than the single attack depicted in the film. When the ship narrowly avoided the first attack, Phillips went back to sailing his coastal hugging route, in an effort to make it to their destination quicker. When the final attack happened, Phillips had no plan, and the crew locked themselves below deck for 12 hours in 130 degree heat. They were then painted in the film as lazy layabouts.

Chief Engineer Mike Perry, who is seen briefly in the film taking a Somali pirate hostage, corroborates the anonymous crew members claims, and claims that the scene where Phillips is taken hostage is completely fabricated. The movie version (SPOILER ALERT!) involves Phillips giving himself up for the sake of the ship, while Perry maintains that in actuality, after he took the Somali pirate hostage, the pirates reneged on their deal to trade Phillips for their own pirate and simply took off with both men—no self-sacrificing heroics actually ensued.

Some of the crew did not cooperate with Sony's retelling of the events, and those who did were paid a paltry $5,000 for their life rights and forced to sign non-disclosure agreements. And here you thought all the looting and pillaging was just onboard.

Won't be the first Hollywood movie to bend the truth a bit but that's to be expected I guess. I saw it yesterday and really liked it. Hanks was great as expected but the main pirate really did a bang up job too. The end was still the real deal though and those Navy SEALS are BAMFs. That ending was great, being ex-Navy it brought back lots of memories of being out on the ocean

Do people in these situations really expect the movie version to not dramatize it?

Exactly. It's the whole pain and gain fiasco all over again.

Doesn't really sound like Hollywood changed it as much as this information is just starting to come out now and we are learning this for the first time. Phillips is still a hero but if he had chose a route he was suppose to, he wouldn't have had to be heroic.

This was Hanks' best role in a long time. Especially at the end. If he doesn't get an Oscar nomination for those last ten minutes alone then ****.

Just saw it tonight. Hanks was amazing. He deserves an oscar for this.

Ya it's such a great build up and then that pay off in the end and the way Hanks portrays how it affected him was truly a masterpiece

It's well made and the way the tension builds in the last 10 minutes is palpable, then the final scenes with Phillips are like this emotional release you go through with him, and that is down to some wonderful acting from Hanks.

7.5/10

I finally got a chance to see this. Tom Hanks is great, I actually forgot just how good an actor he is. I was very much expecting a very 'Hollywood' take on this story with Phillips being more of an action hero but it plays very much as a real life event that's been heightened. What I like about the film is that it gives us an indication of who the pirates are and what they have to deal with, they're not just nameless bad guys, it's very refreshing to see their perspective and makes their position a lot more understandable. The last 10-15 mins is nerve raking as hell even though I knew how the story ends. Overall a very solid movie with a great performance by Hanks that should get him yet another Oscar nomination.

8.5/10

I'm listening to the soundtrack now, and I can't find the track that was playing near the end, when the Phillips was writing the letter to his family. It was beautiful track and yet it's not in the OST? Anyone knows what the track is?

Just saw it, really enjoyed this. Right from the beginning it gripped you and only grew tenser throughout the film. Greengrass is fastly becoming one of my favorite directors. Hanks and Barkhadi Abdi really went all out on this. I hope Barkhadi finds further success in movies because he is very talented (although I suspect he's going to have to start gaining weight and get into shape or be at risk of being type cast as an African gangster for the rest of his career).

8.5/10

The last 10-15 minutes of this movie is really incredible.

So guys, did Tom Hanks get snubbed at the Oscars?

I'm still scratching my head over that one

The only thing I can think of his that his two roles, this one and Walt Disney caused the vote to be split.

It is still stunning.

Just saw the movie again tonight and it definitely holds up. Now I'm going to go down to Fort Pierce to see the lifeboat.

Finally saw this. I thought Hanks was great, but I didn't care for the movie as a whole.

Does anyone know how much the actual (i.e. real life) military operation to rescue Phillips cost?

So guys, did Tom Hanks get snubbed at the Oscars?
Any other year, I would say absolutely. But with the competition in that category this year, I honestly don't feel like he did. Though I haven't seen Nebraska yet so I don't know if he deserved it over Bruce Dern or not.

Watched this last night, I wouldn't say he was snubbed but he did his best work since Cast Away.

Barkhad Abdi is definitely deserving of his nomination.

You aren't kidding! I was tearing up in that scene. He'd been strong through the whole film, but the stress finally broke through and you realize just how tense you as an audience member have been watching this. Hanks's believable breakdown made it feel like it was ok to breakdown a bit with him. And the nurse didn't help things for me. I've been in shock in a medical station and have had a nurse do the same things for me so I was flashing back to how I felt in that situation and how I was crying when she was trying to treat me and comfort me. One of the most realistic portrayals of Post-traumatic stress and shock I've ever seen from an actor.

Id give the film 9/10 and Hanks 10/10.
