I'm in. If a guy wanted to watch the musical on DVD, which is the best one to start with?

There are two: the 10th Anniversary and the 25th Anniversary concert versions. Both are really good...even though there's a Jonas Brother in one of them (he's not awful, just somewhat overmatched vocally).

Ugh, I can't wait 'til this trailer's available in some other format. Every time I try to re-watch it at MSN I get either syncing or skipping issues. :cmad:
I feel your pain, took me forever to watch it :argh:. Looks great though!

I don't think you can watch the full musical of Les Miserables on DVD, but they released the 25th anniversary concert on DVD where various singers sang the songs on the stage to celebrate the milestone.

Amazon.com: Les Miserables 25th anniversary concert

Elizabeth Barks (who plays Eponine) is also in this concert.

Edit: There's a 10th anniversary concert as well.

Yeah, I'd go with the 25th Anniversary.

The 10th is good for original cast members and what not, but personally I can't stand the format. Like the 25th it's a concert, but at least with the 25th they did what (little) staging and costuming they could.

On the 10th you have everyone that isn't singing sitting on chairs behind everyone that is, drinking from plastic waterbottles, etc... It can be distracting.

That and, aside from the Jonas brother as Marius, I prefer the cast of the 25th over the 10th. Never was a big fan of Colm, I like Alfie Boe's voice better.

Just my personal opinion though.

I want to see that in the movie too, just to hear the uproar from the audience. Plus boom mikes and wristwatches in plain view. And Hugh checking his blackberry during Bring Him Home.

The 10th Anniversary also has a balloon popping when Cosette is singing "Castle on a Cloud"...although I give that kid a lot of credit, she jumped, but kept going:

The musical has been seen by more than 60 million people worldwide, so at this point the musical is probably more popular than the original novel.

It played on Broadway for 16 years (and again in a revival that played for over year), and it's played over 10,000 performances in London, where it's still playing.

And the musical is amazing, I've seen it 9 times. If they do it right, which so far it looks like they have...this is going to be an amazing movie.

Yeah I knew of its long history, but maybe someday they can do the novel itself?

I knew Anne was an amazing singer, but her "I Dreamed a Dream" was amazing. In some angles in the trailer (before her character has her hair cut off), she looked like Emmy Rossum from Phantom of the Opera.

They did in 1998, with Liam Neeson in Geoffrey Rush (although I was never really a fan of that version).

The novel has had several screen adaptations. This is the first screen adaptation of the musical, though.

So I'm just noticing how this cut of the trailer is actually quite different from the leaked version. Looks like one of the studio notes might have been "can we get less shots of people looking distressed/depressed and a few more smiles?"

That movie also had Uma Thurman (as Fantine) and Claire Dane (as Cosette), but quite frankly I'm not interested to see that movie because although the novel is a classic, I'm far more enthusiastic about the musical.

It was just on HBO recently. The ending is awful...

People who saw the Neeson/Rush movie who never read the book nor saw the musical are going to think that's the way it ends. Boy, will they be surprised.

Someone from AICN who saw the trailer at CinemaCon said it's basically the same one. I agree, except we only got half of that version, the beginning was missing. So this has the beginning plus much of that leaked trailer with perhaps a few other scenes added/deleted or tweaked. But I recognized quite a few scenes.

I heard about that one and heard it wasn't very good.
Well as I said, there have been several. I'm talking at least 10, probably more. Even in the silent era alone there were multiple adaptations. I've heard the 1935 version (with Frederic March) was pretty good. It was nominated for Best Picture, I believe.

Another link for the trailer plz???

I think it's too bad that the movie isn't very good, considering the talent they got for the movie (both Neeson and Rush are exceptional actors). But I'm just glad that we're finally getting a movie out of the musical, after POTO gotten theirs a few years ago.

I think I may make this trailer into an avatar when I get home tonight.

The video of the leaked leaked trailer starts at the end of a verse that wasn't in this trailer, too, so I'm thinking the original cut may have been a bit longer.
