Homecoming Tom Rothman Becomes New Sony Honcho

But why this jerk out of all of the other people they could have hired? And why now, at this time? Are they dumb?

You should know better by now :yay:

I may have panicked a little, but I was not at all surprised. Sony is still Sony - I'm just giving the studio a pass because, for the time being, it's holding hands with Marvel.

Yea, I hear ya man. I thought for sure doug belgrad was a shoe-in. But I guess this guy is a penny pincher, which admittedly is what sony needs to get them to stop bleeding money

Why don't they create their own cartoon and then sell the toys to it? That's a good money maker there. It's amazing what toy sales can do for a network. Just ask Nickelodeon and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Yeah, the show bringsn in about 1.5 to 2 million viewers, but, the toys have sold about half a billion a year.

Ikr, Hollywood's become too dependent on adaptations and original creations are thrown to the wayside, at least as far as blockbusters go. If they only ventured into original IPs, they could create a bunch of franchises to exploit with merchandise without stepping on the toes of us fanboys

It's really not the best news. However, keep in mind that Feige is familiar with Rothman since he was doing legwork for the older Marvel Studios films including X-Men and X-Men 2 back in the day. Feige is credited on X-Men and X-Men 2.

Obviously, it's not ideal. However, Sony isn't really going to have much of a say in Spider-Man's MCU appearances other than casting I imagine. Hopefully Feige will be able to deal with him again as well.

Look this deal obviously had to be in the works for a while. Marvel/Disney/Feige/etc already had to know Rothman was in line for this gig and they still agreed to the deal. There is always the possibility Marvel could just buy the rights back eventually.

To all of you wondering why Rothman got promoted. It's quite simple. He has experience running a big movie studio. He was already doing work for Sony. He was probably a safe and easiest available choice.

It's clear that certain things and budget got out of control under Amy Pascal's regime. Well Rothman is probably seen as a safer and cheaper choice that will run the studio and keep the budgets lower.

I am not saying the feelings against Rothman are wrong. I am just saying, this is why a studio does it.

While I doubt this will effect spidey too much Sony will probably have a long line of **** movies coming out in the future

Essentially Rothman got the gig because Sony is hemorrhaging money and that's one thing he's sure to put a stop to.

Marvel would not have put themselves in a position for this man to damage their brand, however. So on that score I would not worry.

I would not expect much out of non-Marvel involved Spider-Man projects. I already expected Sinister Six and the other to get the kibosh, now I am certain of it.

Did Lynton stop Arad and Pascal from running Spidey into the ground? Lynton's purview is Sony Entertainment. That includes the music division, the games/video/electronic department. Pictures is just a fraction of that. He left it to the trust of the people below him and they failed. They will leave Rothman on an island and expect him to steady the ship. Their is NOBODY with a "co-" title next to Rothman like Pascal had to share with De Luca.

Rothman has final say when it comes to Spidey as long as his bosses don't step in. Who knows what he will do to evade micromanagement and produce the films that he deems fit. Lynton is not going to be puppetting Tom with all the other **** on his plate.

Lynton helped move the deal forward and is all for it. Same with the Sony higher ups from Japan.

Is this guy the reason X-Men The Last Stand was average and X-Men Origins was horrible?

Oh god I remember when I saw X Men Origins when it finished and I walk out of the theatre with silence and there were tears coming out of my eyes because it was so horrible

I hope during the upcoming Deadpool movie that he breaks the fourth wall and calls out Tom on not letting a Deadpool movie made sooner.

That wasn't a theater showing Wolverine Origins, it was a Turkish prison.

Amusing that you couldn't tell the difference.

Another tidbit about Rothman's position. Amy Pascal apparently told him that 'You're the one that I want' and he was grateful to her for giving him the position at TriStar last year. Apparently, he'll be protective of Pascal as she moves to her producing gig with Ghostbusters and Spider-Man.

Seems like Rothman and Marvel Studios will get along fine.

You know that life isn't fair and that the deck is stacked against you when dipsh**s like Amy Pascal and Tom Rothman just continue to do better and better and better no matter how (well publicized) f***-ups they make.

It does say that Lynton will have little involvement in future films though. But it also says that Rothman is in Amy Pascal's debt and will be very protective of her. If Amy is caring for the Spider-Man film he's not going to just step in and ruin it. Hopefully Amy will be listening to Feige during the production of the 2017 Spider-Man movie.

I wouldn`t put my trust in Amy Pascal though. If her e-mails are any indication, the woman is clinically insane.

Maybe the guy has learnt his lessons. He knows more than anyone the position Spider-Man finds himself in. If he has any sense he will collect his cheque and leave the film makers to get on with it.
