Hey everyone,

I love the viral stuff that has been going on, and up until this point I have mostly been a spectator. I have participated in a lot of the viral stuff, like marching in Hollywood for Harvey Dent, getting tons of emails from Dent and Gordon, and doing the ACME Security stuff, but I never receive anything in the mail such as the Gotham Times because I guess I just missed my chance with that stuff.

Is there anyway I can fully get back into this viral stuff for the last three tasks, mostly because I have time now and I love the cool stuff they give away. But is it too late now? Is there anything new I can do right now to help myself get back into the game? Thanks

nothing submission wise but there may be one last chance comingn (CFB vids on GCN)...and there looks to be a big group event coming up ("Gather all my fans")... as the jokers list shows but nothing is confirmed... hope you get something out of this...

Hmm... you just missed the GCN photo submissions, which is the most recent way to submit your address. You're going to have to wait until something else where you can submit your info, unless there is something available that I'm not thinking of. If they don't have your address, you don't get swag, it's as simple as that.

I hope you get a chance, but being only a few weeks until the movie's release I think you might be out of luck unless we get a way to submit our CFB videos.

the chances of you being able to "get back into it" at this point are slim to none. the virals are all but over.

saying there's a "group event" coming is kinda pushing it. the items left on the list are way too vague to be jumping to those kinds of conclusions.

This late in the game, I don't think there is any "waiting" for a chance. The film is out in 2 1/2 weeks. Unless there's a big-in (a chance for everyone to sign up and get something, like with GCN) sometime between now and then, he's pretty much out of luck. Like I said. The virals are practically over at this point.

Yeah the virals are slowly coming to an end.

But you can hope for viral marketing for the 3rd movie.

well if you're wanting stuff it's too late. I sort of subscribe to the idea that--well, it's just a button. It's neat stuff but honestly I'd just stick it in a drawer and eventually toss it.

The viral itself is about puzzle solving and group story-telling, and that aspect you can join in at any point (as you just have). There's a lot of ppl here on ssh who post stuff they got but I'm sure we're the small dedicated percentage of a much larger group of people following the campaign.

And, it seems apparent that things are just warming up.

If you *really* want to join in, buy a pizza and subscribe to comcast. This is an elaborate advertisement, after all.

It is an elaborate advertisement and I can only imagine what kind of product placement there will be in the movie. Today I saw a commerical for Comcast with a family moving into Gotham City...

That being said, it is alot of fun and if you can get past the people trying to sell swag for a grand and past the myriad of commercials... It's really exciting.

speaking of which, do you think this stuff will appreciate or become garbage in a year? I don't know what kind of resale booths they have at comicons--and the value of this particular brand is unprecedented in ARGs (you won't see any 'I love bees' ephemera popping up on ebay).

My guess, from the dedication of the TDK fans and the precedent of movie posters, is that a year from now a GT may actually be upwards of $100--and that five years from now it'll be worthless. Does any1 else have a feeling for this?

that may be true but...at least it will give us some thing to remember Good or Bad

I think some of the swag might start to be worth something, but in reality the stuff isn't high quality or that really all special. Before long the stuff will fade away into nothingness. Mass produced marketing materials with about as much value as Dective Comics #852.

The real value of the swag comes from the sentiment. Saying, "Hey! I got this phone from the mother fzking Joker!" Or saying, "See this wicked awesome Jokerized playing card. Yeah, the real Joker made that. He told me so when he sent me a text message."

That's the reason the swag is worth something. That's why I hate seeing people trading Gotham Times for Joker cards for CFB gear. There's no fun in that for me.

The relative value of such items goes up and down. For example, you say you think in a year it may be $100, but in two years, it may be...I dunno, $5. But in three years, it'll jump back up, assuming that's when we see another movie.

For the most part, I don't think the items like the Gotham Times or the buttons or anything you'd get more than one of in a package'll be worth a ton. I would think that things like the Dent t-shirts, or the CCFABG buttons with half of Dent's face burned off, or the CFB cowls, and definitely without a doubt the Slipknot packets and the bowling bags (alas for the cake phones; it appears their items of worth were mostly perishable)...will be worth something. But then again, it all depends--we have no real way of knowing if any of this stuff will end up being merchandise in the future, or at least, no way I know of.

But I would also surmise that materials ascertained earlier in the game would have more worth than those later--like, the GT Vol 1 would probably be worth considerably more than the GT Vol 3, which they give away with pizza.

And for the new dude...I don't think you're gonna get anything unless you find someone generous with extra stuff. But I think the final event will probably be fun to participate in regardless. I know with ilovebees they ended it with this 'training exercise' business which ended up being mostly just Halo fans with some people following that game being really irritated, but the point is, even the people who weren't following the game seemed to enjoy it. But you know. I think the swag opportunities are pretty much over save luck.

It's probably too late to get a lot of swag, but they might have a little tidbit here and there. There's still 3 events to go.

Or else you could find someone who's getting stuff and be their new best friend? :oldrazz: The new grad student here (who just started last week) is new to the ARG but she loves the idea so I gave her a little bit of any extra stuff I had.

You know I wonder if alot of this stuff isn't going to be for sale at your local Warner Bros. retailer. I know they're selling the Batman: TDK poker set that's suppose to come with jokerized cards. Why not a Dent T-Shirt or a CFB cowl?

When it becomes cool for people to have participated in this viral the people marketing the movies and etc. will destory the value of the swag we got by muddling the the pool with "post-viral" swag if you will.

I bet you that two weeks after the premiere we'll all be able to buy all the swag from the game at some store or some website.

Aren't we down to 2 events now? It hasn't been crossed off yet, but I assume "Be good to my guests" is the punkdrop game... although the meaning of "Be good to my guests" escapes me.

Who knows. The checklist didn't include some of the smaller online games from last fall, like Mausoleum or Theperfectgetaway.

Also "Be good to my guests" doesn't match up. :oldrazz:

the big stuff, the really rare stuff, honestly i don't see $1000 as excessive. Certainly no more than $1000 for an in-box Luke Skywalker or whatever.

42e is in the business of creating personal bonds with the brand and even a glance at the board shows they're fantastically successful--without precedent in advertising. I spend whole days keeping up! There's every reason to think those personal bonds will make the swag valuable.

Could an ARG really even support itself without a pre-existing brand to lean on? Not only do you need a group of people already dedicated to your subject, it'd actually feel kinda empty otherwise. Like the commercial is the ARG's soul. It's just not clear what kinds of stories you can tell in this way yet.

Are we saying that the joker campaigns are the only ones left?

Oh, that's true too. The checklist only includes Joker trails.

We know there's a Batman-related thing coming up.

True, which is why I'm not 100% sure. But Laughtilithurts is #10, and Redballoons is #11.... so it seems only natural that Punkdrop woulod be #12. I suppose if it is the list will be updated by tomorrow.

EDIT: ^^ Yea, I'm only counting Joker events, since that is the only one we have a sure number for. Obviously there is at least one CFB event on the the 8th.

I'm thinking that there will at least be a CFB finisher, a GCPD finisher, and probably at least 3 more Joker games before the end of the month. I also have the feeling that the viral will go on beyond the movie. If the viral so far as been before the movie, it seems only fitting there should be SOMETHING after the movie. Maybe not a Joker game but maybe another CFB game or a MCU game.

There's a theory in internet marketing called 'The Long Tail'.

In traditional media, you have to capture huge public attention and sell a lot of one book to justify the printing, shipping, storing, and shelving. 'The Long Tail' says that, conversely, internet warehouses like amazon.com avoid the overhead and wind up making more money selling books with tiny readerships--lots and lots of different niche books--than they do blockbusters.

Suppose you have a site like hulu on steroids--every show, ever made, instantly. That's, what, five years away? Then the cult shows like Arrested Development, Firefly, and Battlestar Galactica--good shows, and weird shows, and little independent shows-- all together they're going to be the ones selling the most ovaltine. Not Everybody Loves Raymond.

I'm saying that I think the internet is going to push media toward us geeks. I think there's a wild west period here where independent startups and new takes on media like ARGs can gain big audiences and big attention from big corportations. And there's a kind of flattening, equal opportunity to the niche stuff, that's gonna happen to TV that's already happened in geopolitics.

<steps from soapbox> well that's why i care about the tdk arg anyway.
