I recently watched 'mask of the phantasm' for the first time and really enjoyed it, I was wondering whether other animated batman films are as good, and if so which ones?

Under the Red Hood, Batman Beyond Return of the Joker, and Sub-Zero.

Watched MOTP few days ago as well I loved Bruce/Andrea relationship a lot more.

In order of best to worst -

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
World's Finest: The Batman/Superman Movie
Superman/Batman: Public Enemies
Superman/Batman: Apocalypse
Batman: SubZero
Batman: Gotham Knight
Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman
The Batman Vs Dracula
Batman: Under the Red Hood

As you can tell, I hated Under the Red Hood. Hated the treatment of Black Mask so bad that it ruined the entire film for me. :csad:

thanks everyone, I have just finished under the red hood and actually really enjoyed it, as a reader of the comics I thought it was nice to see a relatively accurate adaptation, I do agree with Paste Pot Pete in that Black Mask was not portrayed anywhere near as well as he should be

Pete, I'm surprised you let the depiction of Black Mask taint the entire movie for you. It wasn't my favorite interpretation either, but it was a drop in the ocean amid all the greatness in the movie.

These are the Batman animated films that I watched. The list is in order but make no mistake, I enjoyed every film.

Batman Under the Red Hood
Batman Mask of the Phantasm
Batman Beyond Return of the Joker
Superman/Batman: Apocalypse (it's mostly a Superman movie)
Batman & Mr. Freeze Sub Zero
Batman Gotham Knight
Batman Mystery of Catwoman

1. Under the Red Hood: Great action superhero movie, better resurrection than the comics version given by the same author
2. Batman Beyond Return of the Joker
3. Mask of Phantasm: First movie to show a detailed origin of Batman, usually all that is scene a guy who his parents were shot as a kid then he decided to be soldier of justice his own way
4. The Batman vs Dracula: I didn't bear to watch the Batman at first because of its art, but after greatly enjoying the Spectacular Spider-Man Animated I finally gave this a shot at a time I felt Batman was boring, it restored my love for the character

Just to throw my two cents. I haven't read Black Mask in comics, and really the descriptions I have read here and there didn't really made an impact on me. I think the Under The Hood version, a very loud and explosive man, was very good. Very diferent from what I have seen. Even if it isn't the definitive version, I quite liked it.

As you have stated before, MOTP is the best Batman Animated film, and I give it extra points for getting Batman right in the medium way before Nolan's Bat-Films. And in second place Return of the Joker deserves that spot. It is just a delight to see, hear and understand. The third one would be Under The Hood. It just blew me away in a form I didn't really expect. A very emotional and fun film.

To be honest, I was exaggerating a bit. I don't care for the film at all, but it wasn't entirely Black Mask that sunk it.

I didn't care for the Joker either. Hated his design, and was really disappointed by Dimaggio's voicework.

Some of the action was good, I loved those bombs that Batman used, but the drama fell flat for me. It read so much better on the page, especially the final confrontation with Batman, Red Hood & Joker.

I don't know; maybe the dynamic (and outlandish) action of something like Apocalypse made for a more exciting adaptation for me, whereas, like I said, Red Hood just worked so much better as a book. As a straight drama, which it often is, Red Hood couldn't shine Phantasm's shoes -utterly smoked in voice acting and atmosphere.

If I wanted to read a book that depicted black mask as the villian he was meant to be where would I look?

1.) Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm
2.) Batman Beyond: Return Of The Joker

3.) Batman: Under The Red Hood (Good, but not as good as the other two)

4.) The Batman vs. Dracula (I actually really like this :woot:)

The rest are all good and enjoyable... but cartainly nothing to lavish TOO much praise on.

The Under the Hood book, War Games, and his appearances in Catwoman. Positively vicious. A true sadist.

As others have said, Mask of The Phantasm definitely comes first. It is the first work that details Batman's origins in this medium and does it very, very well. I always liked the Batman Beyond series, and Joker finally making an appearance during that time in Return of The Joker was great. It comes second. Gotham Knight, while being a bit hit and miss with its stories, comes third for me. I thought there were some really epic moments in it, such as the one with Batman in Crossfire. I rather liked The Batman vs Dracula, even though I'm not a fan of that particular animated series(I liked Rino Romano as Batman, as well as that epic line he says to Dracula at the end of the film). Under The Red Hood comes fifth for me; I'm not a fan of the story(or of Robin for that matter), but I did enjoy some aspects of the film, such as Bruce Greenwood's turn as Batman, Nightwing's appearance as well as the confrontation between Red Hood and Batman. I thought DiMaggio did a decent job as the Joker and while Black Mask seemed nothing more than an angry club, I wasn't particularly familiarized with the character, so I didn't care that much.

Haven't seen the other animated films mentioned in this thread, but from what I've read about them they would probably rank after my top five.

I always wanted them to expand on "Heart of Ice"... best BTAS episode (for me)

UTRH is good. but not as good as people say. it's overrated.

Out of the four I have watched so far, I have to say Under the Red Hood is my favourite! I know this is against popular opinion, and don't get me wrong I loved mask of the phantasm, but I just found myself getting far more involved in the Under the Red Hood storyline, Batman beyond ROTJ and B and Mr F are both great films, but I don't think they carry the story as well as UTRH and Mask

Under the Red Hood is my favorite, too. I prefer it over MOTP, which is my second fav. I find the story in Hood much more exciting, compelling, while still retaining a strong emotional core. Plus the action in it is amazing. Especially that final fight between Batman and Jason.

I just came here to make a new thread, then I saw this thread so I thought it would be appropriate to ask here.

I'm not as familiar as some here with Batman. I've seen Batman Begins & The Dark Knight numerous times, and I've seen Batman '66, Batman 89 & Batman Returns once. Never read any Batman comics.

My question is, I have Mask Of The Phantasm, and I'm wondering if I could watch it without getting lost. And also, which other Batman animated films are good for a Batman fan who's not very familiar with Batman lore?

It's safe to watch it. Go, watch it now. We will wait. What can I recommend you is to watch some of the episodes of Batman TAS, I think is the best starting point.

I don't think you would have a problem with MOTP or Under The Red Hood. They pretty much bring you up to speed. You don't really need to know any back-history in order to enjoy, if that's what you're asking.

I've never been crazy about Under The Red Hood. I think it's just OK.

I liked it more the second time I watched it. The first time I saw it, I was thinking about the differences between the movie and the book, and I kinda distracted myself with that. The second time I watched it, I just took for what it is, and liked it a LOT more. I still think MOTP is better, but UTRH is still good. :cwink:
