From THR:
'Tron' Sequel Back on the Grid at Disney (Heat VisionExclusive)
The studio is moving forward on a follow-up to the 2010 reboot with writer Jesse Wigutow.

A new Tron is back in development at Disney.

The sequel to the 2010 reboot Tron: Legacy — called Tron 3 in some quarters — is moving a step forward with Disney in negotiations to hire Jesse Wigutow to pen the latest draft of the script.

Joseph Kosinski, who directed Legacy, is attached to helm this installment, which is being developed with a renewed purpose under Alan Horn, who took the reigns of Disney Studios in June.

Some considered the dark and trippy Legacy — which teamed newcomer Garrett Hedlund with Jeff Bridges, star of the 1982 original Tron — a lukewarm performer when it opened in December 2010. But the film grossed $400 million worldwide, good enough to spark interest in prolonging the franchise. With that foundation and a strong brand, Disney believes it can really go for broke with a new movie.

Plot details are being kept under wraps. David DiGilio wrote an earlier draft of the script. Justin Springer, a co-producer on Legacy, is producing Tron 3.

Wigutow is already working with Disney on the adaptation of Peter and the Starcatchers and worked on Parallel, another Disney project being produced by Springer. The scribe, who also wrote Eragon and worked on Relativity’s remake of The Crow and Summit's remake of The Osterman Weekend.

He is repped by UTA, Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment, and Sloane Offer.

I hope they take a few cues from Tron: Uprising, and I can't wait to see where they take the story after Legacy.

They won't they will just go with their typical hollywood writers working off of producers ideas as all this sorts of films do. Uprising is amazing.

Curious why disney is moving forward with this, it's not like they don't have other sure bets they can pour money into.

Well the Tron property still made a ton of money off from their merchandise, plus it did well enough at the box office.

So, taking what we know about what happened in the end into account, I wonder where they will take the story from here?

Some thoughts I had:

-Since Sam Flynn is now operating Encom now, I'd like to see the consequences of what that entails. Maybe have struggling with how to run a company, other companies competing with him, etc.

-This is where Dillinger, Sr. and Jr. could come into play. You could maybe have Jr. try to compete with Sam to try, maybe the elder Dillinger's way of getting revenge for being fired from his company.

-Definitely want to see more of the games this time around. As much as I liked them in the last film, I'd like to have them be more integrated and be more crucial to the story. Make them have more stakes, as well. They could even introduce a few new games, too.

-Quorra's relationship with Sam should be explored further in this film. Also, her being in the real world now should have some serious consequences. Some could maybe want to try and use this to their advantage. Maybe Dillinger, Sr. is looking for way to accomplish what Clu could not? Maybe he wants to become immortal? Who knows.

-With Flynn, it was hinted at the end that he wasn't completely destroyed. Maybe he could come back as some sort of Obi-Wan figure to Sam's Luke. You could have Sam learning from his father on how to use his godlike powers in The Grid. And if Dillinger Jr. ended up having to go against Sam in The Grid, they could engage in an epic User vs. User showdown.

-Considering that Tron was shown to return at the very end of Legacy, I'd like to see him play a much, much larger part in this film. Maybe have him be a mentor to Sam and offer him support after Flynn's passing. Also, more of him being a badass. :woot:

So many possibilities for this new film.

It's really not surprising that Disney is moving forward. Tron: Legacy at least made its budget back at the domestic box office while it was a success overseas (take into account that the overseas market is becoming more and more prominent in the decision making for studios). And from what I gather, Tron: Legacy also did rather well on the home video market, especially on blu-ray.

But then you also have to take into account Disney's bread and butter: merchandising. Tron: Legacy toys were the #1 movie licensed toys in 2010, the soundtrack continues to sell phenomenally, and Tron: Uprising's ratings are good on Disney XD. When it's all about IP building, Tron is off to a good start for Disney, which is currently focusing on dominating the boys market.

I am also surprised they're going on with this. With the way they've treated Uprising and now owning both Marvel and Star Wars, I thought they'd just focus on that as far as their plan on being attractive to boys.

Maybe Horn's a big fan.

Didn't care much for Legacy, quite terrible actually, except for Wilde's character. So I hope whatever sequel has a lot better script/story.

i don't think they were good enough because it looks like it's been axed.

goods new about the movie though.

Well I say it's about time the sequel is moving along.

Hmm the sequel could take a few years to be released, maybe in 2015 or 2016?

Maybe:

It’s in the works. Anything could happen, but all I can say is, it’s in its formative stages. [Joseph] Kosinski, who is slated for it, he’s shooting another movie now, and then they’ll get around to doing that. I think somewhere around 2014, maybe. I’m talking way out of school here, but they can’t shoot me because I’m Tron.

Joseph Kosinski's next movie is Oblivion on April 26, 2013.

Hiring a writter is easy. Until they start shooting the film I still don't believe they are making a sequel.

Tron Legacy is in my opinion great.i'am curious about the sequels.

Really?
Jeez it seems the only way to keep a show going these days is is production is dirt cheap.
What's the point of even getting on board these shows today when it feels like all of them, every one is canned less than 3 seasons in.

I going rewatch Tron: Legacy again because of this news. (I've been meaning to anyway)

I'm fine with another one. I'll go see it, but I just hope they don't release it in 2015. That year's already overloaded with geek movies.

The last tracked ratings of Tron: Uprising was 350,000 viewers which seems to be the average for most shows on Disney XD. Of course, Star Wars: The Clone Wars will end up changing that.

I guess this means no Kosinski for SW: Episode VII. Maybe it's for the best, he can make this franchise his own. I'm glad Tron 3 is alive. Love TL.

What I loved most about Kosinski's direction was his style. He was very symmetrical in pretty much every shot and since he helped with the designs of the Tron world, you can see how simple yet futuristic everything was.

I dunno about this. I hear Tron: Legacy isn't doing very well and is getting cancelled.

I know they keep talking about a sequel, but will Disney actually commit to it? I mean I want to see one, but I'm just not sure what Disney thinks.

Yeah, his designs on that film were stunning. I wish he simply hadn't tried to do the young Jeff Bridges thing, because unfortunately, the technology isn't quite good enough to make that look completely realistic 100 percent of the time (I'd say it was about 50/50). That's a shame because other than that, I think the movie was visually perfect otherwise. The city, the bikes, the jets... all of it was pure eye candy.

^^
un vrai bonheur des yeux which can be humorously translated to this fine play of words: a real eye ***** ( bonheur )
