How does everybody here feel about them? I've noticed an ton of them coming out in the fall and i'm wondering what others think about them. I think for an bit they might sell slow but eventually prices will come down and we can get the shows that started an dvd run but were then stopped early(like my beloved growing pains! hehhehe). Opinions?

I want the Angel Complete Series set, but just having trouble spending the $125 on it.

I just bought the Sopranos complete boxset. I managed to save myself a ton on it as well, and havent regretted it one bit.

Usually they cost about as much as you would spend buying them all individually.

And there's always e-bay to try and get one cheaper.

Amazon had it for about $66 before Christmas last year. At that price I had to buy it even though I already owned the individual sets. I managed to get rid of those on Ebay for $89

Go to Sam's or Costco, got the whole set for about half that price. Costco was selling them for 14.99

I like complete boxed sets in theory, but in practice, the individual season sets do tend to work out cheaper unless there's a sale on the complete set or something.

I kind of prefer the book end affect of having the individual sets, all neat and nice right next to one another to tell you the truth.

I want Spiderman the animated series.

That's pretty much my stance on this as well. Unless the show in question was short lived where the complete series is collected in only one set, I tend to favor indivudual sets over the complete box sets.

The Buffy Chosen collection is a little bit awkward on my shelf, I have to admit. But, on the other hand, the fact that the discs for each full season are all placed in one little "booklet" container is much more convenient than having two discs in a case with like 4 cases in the entire set, as with my Angel collection, which I bought before it was collected into a series set. I tend to watch TV series like a ravenous beast when I get into them, so having to pull out a DVD, open a case, put it in, put the case back in the box, pull out the next case, open it, pull out the DVD, put it in my PC, etc. every fourth episode got a bit tedious around Angel season 3. Not a huge deal, but it's a little more convenient to have the full-series set in that respect. Granted, the season sets could easily be placed in new cases that have all the discs in the same container, which would render that whole point moot, but most season sets don't seem to do it that way.

I like both the individual and complete box sets...I bought my grandma the complete X-Files boxset and I own DBZ uncut seasons 1-5 and Naruto uncut volumes 1-9

I'm trying to get the Batman: Animated Series boxset when it comes out this year. And it seems like I can't find the Buffy Chosen Collection anywhere but online, thought I bought the Angel boxset from a store.

But how many times can you watch something though? I don't understand people spending so much money on dvd's. It honestly seems like such a waste of money.

Well, how many times does one watch reruns of a series in syndication?

This is funny because there's a That 70s Show Complete Series set coming out this year also, and this show comes on literally all the time.

Right. Watching a TV series on DVD is similar to watching a TV series in reruns.

Except with no commercials, the ability to pause for bathroom breaks or drink refills, no worry of being preempted, and no scheduling conflicts.

And depending on the series, repeated viewings show the quality of the material

Exactly. As much as I love watching shows like Prison Break and Heroes, trying to watch an old episode on rerun is painful, so I doubt I'll ever buy them on DVD. I'd only seen the first season of The Sopranos when I bought the boxset, but even so, the repeated viewings have rewarded me with a better understanding of the themes and metaphors within those early episodes, so It feels that it all depends on the quality of the show whether buying them on DVD is a good investment.

Yup. And watching a TV series on DVD also enables the viewer to watch marathons of that show if he/she chooses.

and when the last time they aired Babylon 5? I'm glad I got my complete set, love the show but damn they rarely aired it on tv or a few others shows I missed

Complete series tend to hurt the wallet too much in one go, so I refrain from buying them.

Besides, my twelve Buffy/Angel sets look much cooler bookended than the complete series set, and the individual sets look a lot better too. 'Collector's edition'. Nice booklet, six discs.

It also helps if that particular show doesn't come on anymore at all, like with Buffy.

Sci-Fi channel last aired it in 2003, around the same time the DVDs were being released.

And B5 on TV has never been something easy. While I didn't become a fan until later, I have heard horror stories of people trying to watch new episodes during it's original run. One week it could be on Channel 9 at 10 o'clock, the next week it could be on Channel 56 at 3AM. Some markets would air it on a single station at a set time, but would preempt it for a sports game.

For me, it depends on how long the series is. If it's only a few seasons, I want them to be separate. If it's a really long show, I love the convenience of having just one large set. I LOVE my Sex and the City complete series box set! :woot:

watchign on DVD is also usually better quality as the video looks much better than from a syndicated run
