Hmm...

-Jonathan Kent dead.
-Brainiac
-Evil Luthor
-Zod (sort of.)
-Jimmy Olsen
-Lois Lane
-Perry White
-Daily Planet
-Justice League
-Flight
-Phantom Zone
-FOS

Anyone else think its time for TPTB to stop messing around and just give us Superman already?

I mean this is really annoying, they keep beating around the bush about how this is about "young Clark Kent before he becomes Superman" and yet they keep introducing all of these SUPERMAN ELEMENTS! (Jimmy being the newest)

It seems the only thing keeping this show from being a real "Superman" is the fact that Clark doesn't fly or wear the suit. Everything else around him could very easily pass off as his adult life (ala Lois, Daily Planet, knowing Jimmy etc.)

I Love the show, i've been with it since the beginning...but with all of these ridiculous hints, "wink wink" to Superman, don't you guys think its time for the show to just go ahead and evolve into an actual SUPERMAN Show? It's soooooo obvious that Millar & Gough want to go there...

Thoughts?

If you're gonna do a show about a young Clark Kent BEFORE Superman, then do it.

Don't introduce, Lois Lane, Perry White, Daily Planet, General Zod, Phantom Zone, The Fortress of Solitude, Flight, and Jimmy Olsen among other things and still try and disguise the show as "a young Clark Kent BEFORE Superman".

Lets face it...Season 5 was basically Superman w/o the suit.

What i'm trying to get at is the simple fact that TPTB have basically got all the pieces together to finally assemble an actual Superman show...why keep beating around the bush? It just seems that they're holding themselves back from what can potentially be an amazing television series, right on the heels of SR.

Two reasons:

- ratings gimmicks.

- running out of ideas

Its the only way to keep this show going after all these years, thats how they do it.

I know...i'm just sayin' its time to scrap the gimmicks and just go all out.

Transforming the series into an actual Superman show would open up various possibilities, keeping with the "pre-Superman" gimmick is IMO holding the series back, especially with all of these "post-Superman" characters being introduced into the "pre-Superman" universe. (not sure if "post" is the correct term, but you get the point).

Feel me?

If the films continue, they would never allow a Superman series. Its the same situation with why Batman couldnt appear on live action television thanks to the BB franchaise. They need to keep Clark as a teenager in his pre-Superman phase.

Not just that but even if there were no films, I have a feeling Gough and Millar just prefer it this way. Based on their comments on the documentary, I dont think theyre really up for Clark parading around as Superboy or Superman in tights on a weekly basis, which is fine with me.

And the gimmicks needs to continue, I was never a fan of them, but thats what keeps the show on the air. Episodes like Aqua got some of the largest viewership.

I've never seen a show pull more gimmicks out of their ass than Smallville but even if they totally contradict alot of the established DC mythos, theyre successful enough to bring in ratings for the show which is obviously a more primary concern to the execs that G+M report to.

Just think of it as Elseworlds. Nothing really has to follow the comics or other mediums.

.................siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh....................

I have to admit, I don't completely agree with a lot of the stuff they've pulled in. (Lois in smallville for instance), I would have loved for the show to keep going on little cameos from people whom clark would end up knowing as Supes in the future. (in episodes like Run and Aqua). However, the show isn't in a situation where he can just put on the tights, move to metropolis and fight crime. As much as Smallville sways from the Mythos that is Superman, it's still being developed as a medium to get to what we currently know as superman. There's still a lot to be done. Clark isn't the man that we know as superman, just yet.

Well, I believe he's 19.

Clark was identified as being 18 by the paramedics in Hidden when he was being wheeled into the ER and he had his birthday later in Oracle...

He's 19. They refered to him as an 18 year old a couple times in season 5 then he had a birthday just before the finale.

You know, I was thinking about this.

If the mods won't prevent trolls like him from coming back with new user names, maybe there should be a concensus to not engage said trolls in convos.

I mean, what is the reason trolls do what they do?

To get attention for themselves.

Yeah, maybe they don't go about it in a sane way but perhaps the thing to do is would be deny him the thing he's seeking and ignore him.

Don't give him the validation he's looking for.

Any interaction with him, positive or negative, gives him validation. Wouldn't hell for a troll be a forum that you couldn't stir up?

I'm not sure that would work, but I know I've added this alias to my growing list of people on ignore.

I don't need the headache right now.

I agree on alot of things you've said. Smallville is basically Superman without flight and the suit. By intoducing all these gimmicks the creators of the show are also reducing ideas for the future. Lets say Clark becomes Superman in Season 6, yep now his Superman....WHAT NOW??? Do the same things he done already but in a suit. Now lets say they never had gimmicks like Lois etc then in Season 6 if he because Superman you would set up Superman but discovering and getting to know new people, but right now Clark knows everyone important he needs to know. Also another problem if Clark becomes Superman...Clark wears glasses....Superman does not. Characters on the show see Clark's face everyday minus glasses. How will he hold his idenity as Superman if everyone knows what he looks like?

It's been reported that Clark will become Superman in the last ep of the show.

Season 5 to me was a let down. You had all these big things happening but yet no big sparks happened. I wanted Lex and Clark to fight and argue for the whole season and build on that during the season, but Clark and Lex rarely had scenes together. It it seems they never have a good face-off, or Lex seems to be never fully evil.

I dunno if Clark should make a transition to Superman. Lois and Clark was rubbish and I'm afraid if Welling puts in the thights the show will become something like Lois and Clark.

why is bringing in the core players of the superman mythos seen as a "gimmick"?

The thing that alot of posters on this Board dont seem to know or understand is that the majority of the people that watch Smallville know absolutely nothing about the Superman mythos.

Therefore the characters arent being used as gimmicks. Now whether it be when Clark's 20, 30 or 40 they are introducing the audience to other characters that pass through Clark Kent's life.

Smallville has introduced millions to the big wide world of Superman.

I do think if the show stays a hit we could possibly see the show transform into a Superman series, but if they do that it won't be for at least another two or three seasons and that is also if Smallville keeps up its good ratings.
