Ultimate Comics Thread - Part 1

in Ultimate Spider-Man, Bendis says that Danny Rand is suing the cops for removing his mask, violating his civil liberties. We've seen Ultimate Danny Rand. He didn't wear a mask. Bendis is bogging down his writing by not only ignoring other writers' continuity, but his own.

Which is kinda ironic since he reuses the only five jokes he knows in every book he writes.

Ultmate Captain America returns this summer with a cross-over event between the Ultimate Comics:
Captain America returns to the Ultimate Universe this summer for a crossover event between "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man," "Ultimate Comics X-Men" and "Ultimate Comics The Ultimates." Again, Singh promised national attention for the story akin to the death of Johnny Storm based on a key decision a character makes within the course of the crossover.
Sam Humphries and Brian Wood's 1st arcs begin with cross-overs? I understand this is their way of promoting more readers, kinda like Daredevil and Punisher are getting into cross-overs recently, but c'mon now! Still it's awesome to see Cap return, but to make National Headlines? Oh boy, i bet Ultimate Cap is gonna do something edgy like, stop being Captain America or even more ridicilous: renounce his US Citizenship lol. :p Still, Flemm is taking over SHIELD, Mutants in New York are fightning for their lives, we need the main man of Ultimate Marvel to save the day baby!

Gaze upon the full glory of Spidey's cover. Also Sam Humprhies is the sole writer of Ultimates, so there is an error there. How do you guys however feel about Wood's and Humphries' 1st arcs being Cross-Overs, i think it's abit shame depending how long it is that they have to start this way instead of purely focusing on their own stories, oh well.

This is an upcoming Spider-Men cover:

I like it, the way they're both slowly removing each other's masks, they must be terrified and just confused out of their brains.

We then saw some Sara Pichelli art from “Spider-Men”, the kind of pages that make you take a sharp intake of breath so lovely are they. These pages, showing 616 Peter Parker and Ultimate Nick Fury kind of sold me on the series, it – and Bendis’ clear enthusiasm for the project and Ultimate comics world – have such great acting going on, seeing the expressions Pichelli gave these characters really suggests some interesting character moments, Bendis’ talk of 616 Peter Parker meeting Aunt May furthers this idea.
Also previewed were a few covers and variant covers for Spider-men, including a Mark Bagley pencilled cover inked by Sara Pichelli that Bendis seemed pretty chuffed about, as he did too about the Pichelli cover of Peter Parker and Miles removing each other’s masks- saying that it’s just the sort of thing we don’t see often with the covers.

Ultimate Crossover: Divided We Fall!

1334361987.jpg

1334361729.jpg

The star of "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man" by writer Brian Michael Bendis is still a teenager granted super powers from a spider bite who is trying to be responsible with the powers he's been given. Only now his name is Miles Morales and the person who taught him that lesson about power and responsibility was Peter Parker, who perished protecting his friends and family from an attack by his greatest foes. When writer Brian Wood takes over "Ultimate Comics X-Men" this summer the book will still be about super powered mutants trying to exist in a world that hates and fears them, but these mutants are on the run from and fighting back against forces actively trying to imprison and wipe them out. When writer Sam Humphries takes over "Ultimate Comics Ultimates" in May, which features the Ultimate U's version of the Avengers, he'll be writing about a group of characters trying to understand and protect a world that's been drastically changed by the rise of two nations of super powered people.

What can you tell us about the events that set "Divided We Fall" in motion? Will we see it in all three books and your individual characters' reactions to it?

Humphries: It's difficult to say without spoilers -- but it all grows out of the seeds of the past year or so of Ultimate books. Global instability, anti-mutant hysteria, new players on the world stage eclipsing America -- then at the end of "Ultimates" #9 -- well, everything gets pushed off a cliff. There's no going back from that.

Both of you write team books with rather large casts. Who are some of the characters you'll be focusing on during "Divided We Fall?" What makes their perspectives on this story particularly interesting and relevant to you?

Wood: I am going much tighter with the cast of X-Men, which in its first year was quite sprawling and all-encompassing. I'm making Kitty Pryde the clear leader of the group, and sticking with her core team of Rogue, Bobby, Jimmy Hudson, and Johnny Storm. In #13, Kitty has a personal revelation that's going to prompt her to radically re-orient her mission and priorities, and in following, the direction of the book. They'll all become very proactive and aggressive, no more hiding in tunnels, and we take it from there. I think one of the taglines or solicitation bullets says that Kitty is out to "save America," which can sound kind of bland until you question it a bit. Save America from who? Who is she saving it for? And how, exactly? What will this America look like when she's done?

Rather than each issue leading directly into the next, "Divided" utilizes parallel storytelling

Humphries:The big, character-based news for the "Ultimates" is that Captain America is back from retirement. He's been gone for a long time, playing Boy Scout in the desert. When he pokes his head up again, America is -- well, the place done changed, and not for the better. Cap is going to have to come to terms with what happened when he wasn't paying attention. How that affects him and how that challenges him to be a better Sentinel of Liberty is going to be a huge part of what happens in "Divided We Fall."

In terms of plot and themes what are your "Divided We Fall" stories about? How long are the individual stories you're telling?

Wood: I'm telling shorter stories. My #13 is a one-shot, a re-introduction to Kitty and the series and setting things up. #14-15 are my issues dealing with "Divided We Fall," and from that point onwards we're looking at arcs of 3 issues or so. I have the book planned out for about a year.

Humphries: We've got the "Ultimates" mapped out for a long, long time. How long "Divided We Fall" lasts is a secret I'm not telling.

How big is the scope and scale of "Divided We Fall?" What are some of the important locales where the action unfolds? What kind of forces are your protagonists up against?

Wood: In "Ultimate Comics X-Men," we'll see the team in the Southwest states of America, dealing with the Stryker regime and the Sentinel forces; also the militia that have allied with Stryker and are sympatico with his goals. The big set-piece action and world-building is going to happen in the Ultimates, and the smaller, more personal reflection of all that is what the X-Men is for.

Beyond that, we'll revisit Karen Grant and the SEAR later on in the year.

Humphries: In "Ultimate Comics Ultimates," it's BIG, as big as America itself. We're not going to see Thor and Tony hop on motorcycles and ride the freeways searching for truth and freedom like in "Easy Rider." But we are going to see quite a bit of the United States. "Ultimates" is a big picture book with a big scope, and we're not going to shy away from that.
Ah Captain America going againts the Government itself. :) It's good to have him back.

Ultimate Panel Info:
"It's one of my favorite books to read and to work on," said Anamat. "This is his next stage. He's still trying to become a hero, he's donned the costume, but he's still trying to figure out what that actually means. … You'll be seeing a few more characters including a love interest."

Anamat touched briefly on Brian Wood's "Ultimate Comics X-Men." "It's actually quite exciting," said Anamat. "The cast is going to be tightened significantly. … Mutants are being killed everywhere and people are somehow okay with this. Kitty Pryde empowers her friends and [decides] to start saving people. It's going to be a mini-track -- they'll be on a journey to the southwest to the mutant camps that are there. You'll start seeing relationships developing between these characters. … It's a teen story with a little bit of written edge."

Sam Humphries began speaking about his work on "Ultimate Comics Ultimates" with writer Jonathan Hickman. "He constantly wants to know what my favorite font is," joked Humphries. "He had plans for the next decade and a half. He's been so supportive and generous from the start." Humphries also spoke about how Hickman had been helping him develop his own ideas for the direction of the future of the book.

"You've got them on a stage where anything goes," he said. "This is a place where you can really shake these characters up in ways you couldn't do before," noting his first issue had just gone to press.

Singh then announced a story called "Divided We Fall," which brings Captain America back "in a major way" to the Ultimate U in a storyline spanning "Ultimate Comics X-Men" and "Ultimate Comics X-Men." "He's going to make a decision in this story that is something that has never been done in superhero comics before," said Singh. "That's not hyperbole, it's actually never been done before."

"Hickman was very adamant to take Cap off the map. He's been very down and out since the death of Peter Parker," said Anamat. "We haven't seen him on purpose. When he comes back, there's a very important reason why he does. It's a really beautiful moment when it does happen. We'll see the Ultimates do what they do best."

Humphries also noted Hickman's desire to take Cap off the board. "Of course, in my first solo issue, I'm going to bring him back," said Humphries. "In your face, Hickman! … When Cap comes back, he's going to have to confront a universe that's dramatically changed. [His decision] is going to be something we could only do in the Ultimate Universe."

Humphries clarified "Divided We Fall" "is an event but is not a crossover," saying "Ultimates" would be "the big scope" book and there will be cross-polination of characters, but you can read only one of the books and figure out what's going on.

"You're going to have an Avengers Assemble moment that's going to make you smile ear to ear," said Alonso. "The last time we did an Ultimate event, it ended in the death of Spider-Man. You're not going to want to find out from your buddy."

Humphries also announced Billy Tan is going to be taking over art on "Ultimates" starting on issue 13. "I'm so excited to have him on the book," said Humphries. "He specializes in this big, action-packed, blockbuster storytelling and that's exactly what we're going to need to pull off 'Divided We Fall.'

How old is Miles meant to be in that crossover? Because that image makes him seem a lot older.

I think it's just the artist's poor autonomy/proportion skills.

You used to see the same thing with Robin all the time. The cover artist would draw him to look like he was 12, while the interior guy made him look more like 24.

I've been really enjoying the Ultimates stuff and Divided We Fall sounds like it could be pretttttyyyyy cool, but I'm really turned off hearing Billy Tan will be doing the art for Ultimates. Not a fan.

Why do people always point to the cosplayers?

On my first looksee, I didn't notice you were actually on the panel.

That's pretty BA.

Ultimates #9 was the boss. It's a shame, because even if Hickman truly gets the Avengers title for himself, he's never going to be allowed to play around the status quo as much as he is within Ultimate Marvel, this sort of creative freedom with proper hands is what makes Ultimate Marvel such a fan favorite title. I'm just anticipating the ending of Hickman's wonder story and checking how Humphries will follow.

Moving into fan questions, SpiderX was one of a few people who asked about the Ultimate U this week, and he had a very specific reason for it: "I just finished reading 'Ultimates' #9. Wow, I was blown away by this issue. Hickman is doing a phenomenal job. Without spoiling what happened in the issue I would like to ask a question. How will what happened affect of the Ultimate Line going forward? I know Miles is still dealing with Uncle Aaron and learning his super hero ropes and mutants have to deal with their own problems but will the repercussions be seen immediately in 'Ultimate Spider-Man' and 'Ultimate X-Men'?"

Alonso: Spidey X, I ask, how something that huge would NOT affect the rest of the books. There will absolutely be EXTREME shockwaves from the end of "Ultimate Comics Ultimates" #9 that will ripple through "Ultimate Comics X-Men" and "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man." Three words…DIVIDED WE FALL!!!

The crimson had one covering a bit of the Spidey universe: "With Miles Morales meeting 616 Peter Parker, is there any chance of a cross-over featuring the Spider-Man of 2099? A comic series set in the original 2099 universe would be even better."

Alonso: No plans for that.

Mysterio is the villain of Spider-Men:

Mysterio, the nefarious magic man who has been a Spider-Man villain since the hero's earliest days, is the guy who finds a rift between the regular Marvel Universe and the alternate-reality Ultimate Universe, a plot device that is central to the upcoming Spider-Men.
Beginning in June, the five-issue Marvel Comics miniseries by the Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man creative team of writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli will feature the first meeting of Peter, Stan Lee's original-recipe web-slinger from The Amazing Spider-Man, and Miles, Bendis' half-black, half-Hispanic teenage hero.
Bendis says fans who have been following Ultimate comics religiously will enjoy the Mysterio reveal. The villain has been making trouble in that universe for a while, traveling incognito to and from the regular universe.
"Mysterio is up there with the most dangerous criminals that Spider-Man has come up against," Bendis says. "When I was a kid, I found some of his stories to be terrifying. It just got so personal. When he does his thing right, he delves in and gets deep into a psyche that doesn't deserve that kind of punishment."
The illusionist's helmet, which does resemble a fishbowl, only adds to the cool factor.
"He bought a gross of fishbowls at one point and is just sticking to them," Bendis quips. "Most villains, all you have to do is step out of their eye line and they can't see you. But he can turn his head and can see you from all directions."
The heart of Spider-Man, though, isn't Mysterio's evil plan — it's the meeting of Peter and Miles.
Peter arrives in a world where its Peter Parker died in the line of duty being Spider-Man, inspiring Miles to become a hero, and Peter will encounter all the people who were important to the alternate version of him, such as Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson.
"Now we're in Christmas Carol territory. If done right, this is an emotional and powerful Spider-Man story that we haven't seen before," says Bendis, who was admittedly a little misty-eyed after completing a recent Spider-Men issue.
"The real meat of the story is (Peter) meeting Aunt May and Gwen and MJ and discovering this world and what it means to him. You can't walk away from an interaction like that without being changed, and Miles being witness to it all is the best lesson he can learn."
It has made for some great character moments, Bendis says. Peter and Miles will be teaming with the Ultimates (the Avengers of the Ultimate Universe) and Nick Fury, the African-American S.H.I.E.L.D. guy whom Peter knows as an aging white secret agent. Peter has the chance to be reintroduced to Gwen, who in the Marvel Universe died years ago during a battle between Peter and the Green Goblin. And Miles experiences sacrifice, responsibility and all of the things that entail being Spidey firsthand.
"I spent a great deal of time on one particular scene that rides the roller coaster of emotions, and everyone asks all the questions you'd imagine they'd want to ask," the writer says. "It was insanely fun and insanely emotional to write."
Comic fans have taken to message boards to talk about Peter and Miles meeting and the bridging of the two universes, but at least in-house at Marvel, Mysterio was the most controversial element in creating Spider-Men, according to Bendis.
It made sense to him, though, because a major crossover like this needs a perfect villain to cause chaos — i.e., the Joker in Batman vs. The Incredible Hulk in 1981, or Darkseid in The Uncanny X-Men and The New Teen Titans in 1982.
"I wanted something that reminded me of that but not be a ripoff," says Bendis, adding that the potential of other characters going through the rift, from either side, is "a big part of the story."
While stories of alternate universes may remind people of things like the TV show Fringe, Bendis admits the movie Pleasantville actually served as more of an inspiration for Spider-Men than anything sci-fi.
"It doesn't have to build and build and build to some sort of crisis like comics usually do," he explains. "It can just be this story hook that allows you this enhanced drama you wouldn't normally get that just leaves the characters defenseless to anything but their emotions. That is very appealing to me — as a reader, too."

I wished that Ribic was sticking around for Divided We Fall.

I've chosen to underline the difference between the two Spider-Men. Miles is a young, newborn superhero, insecure and clumsy sometimes during the action. On the other hand, Peter is older and wiser. He has much more experience. He knows what to do and how to do it -- but this time his self-confidence as Spider-Man is not the same because in "Spider-Men" he has to face a reality where all his reference points have been shattered. So I had to work on a big range of mixed emotions.

Does that mean in "Spider-Men" Peter is transported from the Marvel Universe to the Ultimate Universe? Can we expect a wide range of expressions and body language as Peter deals with the changes of this reality?

Absolutely! Peter will find himself dealing with a different dimension that seems so familiar and at the same time so confusing the more he gets to knows it. That's why I really wanted his body language to reflect all his insecurities and fears. What makes Spider-Man special is the humanity of the hero behind the mask, and in the story I wanted to stress that strength.

The architect of this reality switch has been revealed to be the Marvel Universe version of Mysterio. What's your sense of this character? What do you find most interesting about him? How does he differ from Ultimate Mysterio (who you've drawn before)? And is it tough to convey this Mysterio's emotions given that he doesn't really have a head?

Mysterio (from the Marvel U) still remains an old fashion flavor villain to me, and sometimes this characteristic clashes with the modern way the Marvel Universe is depicted. You will be surprised, though, by how Bendis made him cruelly cool in this story!

I feel closer to Ultimate Mysterio, especially in terms of costume design. The fact that he doesn't have a head but only a hint of his evil facial features makes him really scary and disturbing to me. He reminds me a bit to the face in the mirror of Grimhilde, the Snow White villain, but burning in creepy flames. This strange head of the Marvel U Mysterio makes it hard to tell his emotions, in fact you don't know if you are in front of a human being, an alien or a demon, and that makes him even creepier.

Brian Wood is just the best, I have no doubt that he'll elevate UXM into something great

MMhm. It's wonderful that Ultimate Marvel can let him do whatever he wants, well then again thats what they promised Spencer, but ended up not liking how long his stories we're taking. @_@
