Ultimate Deadpool

I just got through reading the ult. deadpool arc. Lousy at being a racist. He had potential though.

I don't have a problem with Ult. Deadpool, in fact I like the character. So he is nothing like the current version of 616 Deadpool - so what? Thats a good thing.

As some people have corretcly pointed out, when the 616 version of Deadpool was introduced he was a pretty lame Daethstroke rip-off, its only more recently he's become a very good readable character. His original incarnation wasn't that much different to the Ult. version. The whole point of the Ultimate title, is Characters can be dramatically changed if necessary.

If you want to read about an insane, funny, wise cracking merc, read the 616comic book. If you want to read about a sane, serious racist merc read the Ultimate one. I'd be disapointed if the the Ultimate and 616 versions were virtually identical to be honest.

Somebody please enlighten me, what was the original purpose of the Ultimate Universe? To condense and retell Marvel history or to erase it completely?

I'm sorry but Ultimate versions of characters are not supposed to be entirely new characters. If that were true then no one would object to Peter Parker being a black guy whos parents are still living, or to Captain America being a woman who enjoys shopping.

A certain essence of the character has to remain intact, otherwise what the heck are we doing this for? Deadpool was always the merc with a mouth. Only he isn't much a merc anymore and he didn't have much of a mouth (meaning he wasn't very funny). Calling a potato a tomato does not make it a tomato. Calling this sane serious "soldier" Deadpool will never make him Deadpool.

And again, I understand the fact that when he first appeared Wilson was one-dimensional but 15 years have passed since then. Must Bendis make the same mistakes!?

I think the main reason people are anoyed about this is because, you only get one shot at Ultimizing a characters origin.

Deadpool himself is not a bad character at all. He's just as ugly as his 616 counterpart, maybe even uglier. And to think he willingly did that to himself because of his fear of mutants is amazing. Ultimate Deadpool is far from a failure, I don't know what everyone else was expecting from him. More comedy perhaps?

Get him a better story and I think Ultimate Deadpool will really shine.

Basically. All he needs is a more involving sotyrline and this character will step it up with the rest of the more prominent figures of the Ultimate Universe.

Lady Vader: Yeah, you've got thr right to piss and moan. But when you're spending money purchasing items and all you find yourself doing is pissing and moaning, then maybe you should stop wasting your money. You seem to want change and yet you continue to invest money in a product <------not the smartest way to show your displeasure.:o

If you won't believe anything of what you read, then you're going to be constantly upset because Quesada and even Vaughn have said that the Ultimate line was created as a completely seperate line accesible to fans that wouldn't have to dig through decades of continuity and didn't have to know the 616 couterparts. Which means they don't HAVE to be anything like the originals but they can if they choose.

So.....yeah, that is why it was created.

Well, not to be hypocritical, I don't actually buy comics cause I live in a eastern european country where they happen to not be shipped. That's why I said "invest" and not "pay". You can only pay money but you can invest money, time and emotion. The only money I actually pay for my comics are the ones I spend on my internet connection. Which is still a hefty sum, but granted, it doesn't go in the publisher's pocket.

Further more, this was only one arc. If I would live in the States I'd like to finish buying an arc that I've started. Naturally. Other then that I believe people are entitled to state their displeasure NOW after the arc has finished. Public opinion should matter enough for Marvel and Bendis to make some changes should they ever decide to re-use Ultimate Deadpool.

@ Genesis
If they can be totally different, why call them Deadpool, Spiderman, Captain America, etc!?

Sigh. I remember having the exact same conversation months ago when i first found out about this particular Ultimate arc. I'm just can't buy into the Ultimate way of thinking si pace.

See, this is one of those opinions that has "become fact."

The reason why Ultimates was started was to get younger/newer fans without the daunting task of catching up on 40 or so years of continuity/modernizing them a bit.

While that does mean that some liberties can be taken, if you have a character named Wolverine that is black, a woman, and a crippled human...you're actually defeating the purpose of the Ultimate line.

I'm all for interesting ideas/things that can build on a character (I don't mind Colossus being gay, especially since it's about time Northstar had a real X-man b/f, I don't mind Capt. being a bit of a dick, etc.) but having this Deadpool (which seems fairly weak from all indications) would be akin to having a member of AIM that was fairly outspoken. He's generic with nothing to stick out about (when compared against 616 Deadpool).

So either do something interesting and make us care that he got Ultimatized or just make a new generic character.

I didn't see anything generic about him.

Did you see his face? Did you notice how much he really hated mutants? He was the leader of the Reavers, and could steal other peoples appearences.

What was so cookie cutter about him?

No. I didn't see his face... because he no longer had one. :)

In the Marvel universe, hate is a pretty common thing. We'va had characters who really really really hate mutants before. Now I understand if Bendis wanted to up the ante and give form to a new dangerous type of paranoia, but I'm not sure that Deadpool was the best vehicle for that. I have stated months ago that 616 Deadpool is already ultimate. He is a volatile mix of humor, violence and drama. There's not much more you can do with him in terms of making him more edgy.

I believe that Bendis knew this and decided the only way to make it work is to create an entirely new character. He even gave him a new name (Wadey) and what was the story arc called... Deadpool.
Gotta sell those books, now don't we?

And a disfigured face is something new?

Did you notice how much he really hated mutants?

Like any one of a few hundred characters that have been around since Marvel's beginning?

He was the leader of the Reavers, and could steal other peoples appearences.

Oh...so he's Chameleon...that's what makes him so original...

What was so cookie cutter about him?

Not trying to be insulting but I honestly could not stop myself from replying in that fashion. Take no offense.

DOn't worry dude, Purples very odd.

I thought th' arc was weak. And once again, Spidey needed his butt saved in th' fight. Anticlimactic endin' as usual. Ultimate Spidey just disappoints on so many levels these days, which sucks 'cause I USED to enjoy it.

I have almost every issue, but I haven't read them. Should I even bother?

This is exactly how I feel only you said it much better than I did. :(

Oh yes. Just because this one particular arc sucked doesn't mean the series as a whole is not good, From the very first issue, this series has been a serious favorite of mine. I can forgive one suckbutt arc in light of all the other gems he has given us.

Th' first half of th' series was good. As it goes on Bendis' true talent comes through. Of course I use talent sarcastically. Basically Spidey gets his ass kicked, gets unmasked and needs someone else to beat his baddies from th' middle onwards in almost every arc.

Did they keep his connection to Wepon X and Wolverine? If they did, this opens some doors to the future. I didnt read the whole thing, but I checked it out because I love DP. I wouldnt call him a dissapointment but he is certainly no 616 DP.

I just wish Spidey would stick to fighting his own villains. I haven't read the arc but can anybody tell me why Ultimate Omega Red wasn't in UXM.....where he belongs?

They should really have 616 Deadpool accidently appear in the Ultimate Universe, by way of a befungled teleporter, and kill his Ultimate counter-part.

I could see there being an issue of "Exiles" where that happens. Maybe similar to the current team of Wolverines in that comic.
