Hmmm...Surprised there isn't already a thread for this. Anyone else pick it up? It's nice to see that Fury has a bit more in common with 616 Fury than we were previously led to believe. And am I correct in understanding that Wolverine is not a "real" mutant, but a manufactured one, made by the Weapon X program? That's pretty crazy, but also somewhat ties into his 616 origins of being "Canada's Super Soldier" in his first appearance.

I got it, thought it was cool. Can't really say much though, typical Bendis issue 1, lots of cool questions and possible answers but I look forward to the rest of the series and Ultimatum. I remeber reading Ultimate Team Up waaaay long ago thinking, "Will anything come of this 'It's all connected. That's it that's the secret'." After reading Ultimate spidey all these years I figured it meant nothing. I was wrong...

I remember Bendis actually talking about this all the way back then. It seems like they've had it planned out for a long time. Did anyone else get kind of a Luke Cage vibe from Fury's experience with the Infinity forumula here? The whole prisoner being expiremented on. And seeing as it was the forerunner of the super soldier serum, it's also very similar to Truth...I wonder if we might see Isaiah Bradley pop up at all...

I understood every mutant is manufactured, that Weapon X created the mutant X-Gene or whatever they're calling it here. It was a good issue, but I wonder how they'll explain things like the Phoenix with this theory.

That's the way I understood it too.

It was a cool issue, to see some dots starting to get connected was pretty interresting. I hope next issue will be this great

It was alright and kind of interesting. I'd like to see where they go with this.

And Namor...!

The way that they referred to Logan as Mutant Zero, I kind of took that as they might play mutation as more of a infectious disease. Which could be kind of interesting.

I'm not sure I'm on board with this series now we've had the first issue. It feels kinda like the Ultimate Iron Man series - absolutely no reason for him to build the damn armour. He just wants to build a better armour than the organic one in his skin. No heart trouble, no accident forcing him to build the armour in the nick of time. Its just doesnt play out as well as the 616.

Here we have the possibility that Logan is the progenitor for an artificial race (I know the Kirkman run was fairly awful - but do we dismiss Apocalypse now?), that Nick Fury despite a criminal war record was allowed to elevate to Colonel then General of a world peacekeeping force, that he was experimented on and developed some kind of temporary explosive power. It seems to make the characters too convoluted and less relatable than necessary. Similar to the revelation of Colossus's drug enhanced ability (how then do we explain him not being able to get hold of Banshee when incarcerated by weapon X yet still superhuman)

I'm thinking that for Apocalypse, Sinister was still just crazy, and he WAS Apocalypse the whole time. He just needed to collect the life forces of these other mutants to activate his powers somehow. And Phoenix is probably still an alien :o

This sucks. A friend and I had this idea for the Ultimate line a couple years ago. The only difference is that SHIELD and Weapon X programs were a byproduct of Apocalpse's desire to improve himself. Granted, this was also meant to be an Apocalypse origin story too, but Marvel royally screwed him over.

Yes, cause I'm sure Marvel had wire-tapped your friends house and stole his idea. And the seeds for this werent planted all the way back in the first issue of Ultimate Team Up or anything...

Were they? How? I don't remember. Was that opening scene actually in that UMTU?

Yes. It was at the end of the Hulk issue. Bendis in fact mentioned in interviews all the way back then that it wasn't just Banner being crazy, but there was more going on with the Ultimate universe than meets the eye.

Just because Bendis thought it up years ago doesn't make it any less crap. Not saying it will end up being crap, just saying it probably will be.

What a well thought out argument that is. "It's Bendis, so it will probably be crap." Excuse me, I need to go re-read Torso, to bring my IQ back up after it dropped several points after reading your post.

I think it will be crap because I bought number one and it was crap (just my opinion). I didn't attack Bendis, I just said that just coz he thought of it years ago doesn't make it a good idea.

Defensive much?

Bendis has been pretty steady on USM lately. But he's far from infallible.

The problem isn't Bendis. The problem is that USM is the only good Ultimate title right now. So it's becoming more a matter of "Who cares?"

Hell I am not a fan of most of his work but when he gets it right (as in the case of USM and DD) he really gets it right.

Of course when he gets it wrong (anything Avengers) its really wrong

In this case, his work on Ultimate Power (which is supposed to help set the stage for this mini) was really bad, sure that might have been due to the fact that Ultimate Power was doomed to be horrible regardless of who was writing but it did nothing to fill me with confidence regarding Ultimate Origins

I dont see how the story is at fault for not filling in all the blanks in the first issue when its 1 or 5. I mean Nick fury rising through the ranks will probably be answered. I dont get an ultimate iron man vibe from this. The super soildier story in ultimate comics has been a driving force. It was always a mystery. Now they are trying to come up with a story that could be some good fiction. My only beef so far is the hulk. Will somebody explain the hulk in the ultimate series. 1 moment the hulk is grey and quite a trash talker. Another momemnt hes the green hulk from the 616 universe. Explain these color changes already. Its kinda the stuff is see in the ultimate books. One artist draws them the ultimate way while the other artists draw them the 616 way. Hell take ultimate X-men. Some artist draw wolverine the ultimate way(tall) whiles ohers draw him the 616 way(including ultimate origin as well as short). Hell this is probably the biggest thing dragiing ultimates 3 down(these guys did not look at all at the character designs for the ultimate universe and just drew them the 616 way).

Anyway.......

I dont think the mutant genome they found denies the existance of other special beings.

The hulk is incredibly easy to follow if you just read the dialouge.

He started out green, with just the Hulk serum in his blood, that was Banners first attempt at re-creating the super soldier serum. This change was not permanent, hence the dialouge at the beginning of Ultimates 1 #2 about having no hulk cells in his body for 12 weeks, and being allowed to go back to work.

Banner then mixed the Hulk serum with samples of Captain Americas blood, and that turned him into the grey Hulk we've seen in The Ultimates, Utimate Hulk vs Wolverine, and Ultimate Human. Being bonded to Cap's blood made the changed permanent.

So there's nothing to really explain here...It's been explained before, someone just needs to pay more attention ;)

No is does need explaining

In ultimate 1 and 2 the Hulk is gray
In ultimate wolverine vs the hulk, the hulk is green
This story takes place between ultimates 1 and 2, so why the color change?

In ultimate power the hulk is again gray
In ultimate origin we got a green hulk

In various flashbacks of the hulk from various ultimate minis, the hulk is either gray or green for the same events.

Either he is changing color and nobody is saying crap(and could be revealed). Or the artists are not paying attention and the ones who color him green havent been checking on this universe version of the hulk and to me thats lazy.

So again what color is the hulk in the ultimate universe?

They actually said in Ultimate Hulk VS. Wolverine that it changes.
