When I first saw that, to me it looked like he'd been hit with something electrical and then redirected it.

And I still think the same, he looks uncomfortable at the start but then when he extends his hand he becomes more comfortable. I wouldn't be surprised if his powers are being stripped though.

I think he's re-channeling an electrical attack from Ultron. If true, that would be a nice little nod to Jason Aaron's current run on Thor, where the character's been able to summon his storm w/o the aid of Mjolnir on three separate occasions.

This is how I'm reading it too (fully aware that I'm biased and I might be seeing it this way because this what I want to happen!). I'm still curious as to where Mjolnir is, though...

I was trying to figure out where that shot takes place, as well. Any ideas? MCU Asgard has more of a gold look to it, except in TDW Taylor did establish that there are more stoney parts of the old city, so I guess Asgard is possible. But if you look behind the woman, it almost looks as though there is an Egyptian-style sarcophagus.
Look:

Could this be in Wakanda? Maybe the team is there to head Ultron off at the pass before he gets more Vibranium? If so, Wakanda plays much more of a role than has been let on. (we also see the African woman in the cave...)

The pattern on the wall in the left looks similar to some patterns on Asgards walls in TDW.

However it also to me looks like the same place as where Widow is in these shots

Yeah, it does. That occurred to me as a possible clue as well (however, the designs for Asgardian knotwork seem to be more ornate and less symmetrical than these, but of course that doesn't rule it out.)

This does look like the likely candidate to me. Good catch, Ghostcrow.

Hahahaha
A massive thunderstorm breaks out every time he finishes, apparently...

That possibility crossed my mind too.

Like I said sticking to my guns of Thor shooting lightning until proven otherwise.

Thor's powers being stripped makes no sense since he hasn't shown any electrical powers w/o Mjolnir.

I keep switching from it definitely looks like he is shooting it out his hand, to it definitely looks like it's being extracted, of course as BigThor says there is no precedent for Thor actually having the powers and not Mjolnir.

Perhaps a power boost is the most likely option given the evidence.

Put me in the "he's getting hit with electricity and redirecting it" camp

Also it's funny cos for ages a lot of people including me mentioned that perhaps Thors vision was him losing his powers or someone else wielding Mjolnir. Suddenly we have this shot, and people aren't mentioning that might be a possibility that it's just an illusion or vision.

In the comics Thor is able to use lightning without his hammer. Just because he hasn't done so yet in the films doesn't mean he is incapable of doing so.

As for the scene in question, it doesn't seem to be Thor's doing. When I first saw the trailer he seemed to be redirecting the electricity. But after seeing the woman behind him, it seems she is the cause of whatever is going on. However, I doubt that they strip away his powers as they already did that for the first film. Perhaps she is controlling Thor and using him as a weapon.

Perhaps he's learning to channel lightning without mjolnir? He sort of seems to me like he's trying to control it kind of like when superman learned to fly or zod getting used to the heat vision in mos. my own speculation of course lol

This would be amazing!

.

This is another good guess, great one actually.

I think he's channeling it through the armor. Whether or not it is coming from with in, the fact remains the same. Thor is in some way connected lightning. It's not just the hammer. With a magical character wanda coming in, she very well could help open his mind, and connect him to his power, maybe he learns to channel energy in the form of lightning here.

I'd like to see a HD screenshot of the end of that gif, I've seen a few shots of the first bit when it looks like Thor is hurt or struggling to control it or whatever, but I'd like to see what his face is like when the lightning is coming out his hand.

I'd love to see them separate Thor from mjolnir, believing that they have now stripped him of his powers, only to have him charge up independently.

Either one of these scenarios would be amazing to see as a Thor fan.

The shot looks awesome and it's great to see something new from Thor that we haven't seen before. The way he moves slightly backwards at the start makes me think he is being hit by something electric and then channeling it back, but it's certainly open for interpretation.

He could be summoning lightning like he does with Mjolnir except this time he uses his body as the conductor.

The way he's moving slghtly backwards could be from the impact of "self summoning" a.k.a when his own lightning hits him.

so no one else got the impression that something is gonna go down between Thor and that chick? Shes disrobing and he's at least shirtless in his scene in what looks to be the same place

I never really paid much attention to that.
