The Year of Hemsworth has started out horribly. Blackhat looking at one of the worst, if not the worst debut for any film with over 2,500 locations. Potentially less then $4m, with the reviews to match.

Second in the credits... :o

Lol who honestly thought Blackhat was going to do big business?

Not I sir, not I

Plus movies fail because of bad plot/storytelling and lack of proper direction. There have been plenty of "good" actors in crappy movies.

Was this called year of Hemsworth, cos that doesn't really seem right, Blackhat always looked bad, he could receive the possible shaft in AoU, a supporting role in a reboot of an old comedy, and a film about a whale attack which has been pushed to oscar season right in front Star Wars.

Not really a recipe for massive box office success beyond Avengers.

Although Blackhat is more proof actors name don't draw in money any more, I mean from what I've heard it's no worse than Taken 3 which brought in a lot of money only cos it's still riding on the original.

If RDJ or any other big name actor would've been the star of Blackhat the results wouldn't be much different.

or RDJ wouldn't have been in it anyways because he saw the movie script was crap :p

Hilariously Hemsworth didn't read the script, he said he saw Mann was directing and accepted. Bet he never does that again.

We've already seen that play out.

He and Chris Evans can commiserate on their respective non-Marvel career bombs, then :woot:

Though Hems seems to have found an ideal creative team with Ron Howard. So he's got that going for him. I need Evans to work with another great director again outside the Marvel movies.... Though I'm not super sold that Evans should be directing himself LOL!

Yeah I hope that they dont dumb down Thor powerwise either. Need to see him really cut loose and show how powerful he is.

Case in point: The Judge.

Black Hat won't make during it's entire US run what The Judge made opening weekend.

The Judge
still made $47m U.S. and about $85m WW on a far smaller budget and in a far harder to sell genre outside Oscar season. While a big star name can not guarantee success in any genre for any film it can help mitigate failure. The Judge will make a profit for WB. Black Hat will be a huge loss for Legendary and Universal.

Black Hat has been shoved around the schedule so long that it was obvious Universal had no confidence in this $80m movie but even so expectations were for a $10m opening w/e. It had the colossal bad luck to open against American Sniper.

Bong doesn't count? Snowpiercer is one of the ten best reviewed films of the year and worldwide it made as much as Howard's Rush and stateside it made more for it's studio because they spent nothing on marketing or a theatrical release - which sucks - but was profitable.

Heart Of The Sea getting an Oscar season release bodes well but it's ridiculous how WB delays so many of it's movies - and after already starting marketing for them. What a waste of money.

After "Rush", I will watch anything Hemsworth and Howard do together. Even if the subject matter isn't quite as appealing to me with "Heart of the Sea".

In what way is it a waste of money?

Well Judge actually looked good though and wasn't that bad from what I've heard, so it is surprising it made only that much, and Blackhat will probably do well in the Asian market, with it's famous asian cast.

Yeah unfortunate I guess that American Sniper has become quite a colossus

They basically have to restart their marketing campaign and spending from ground zero when the release happens months or a year later after already spending money and lost of man hours setting up for a release that didn't come. They've pulled Jupiter Ascending and Heart Of The Sea when they were only about 2 months from release, that's quite late in the game but at least it was before they spent money on ad spots.

If it really does start to get oscar buzz though, that's free marketing right there. I don't know about most people, but I hadn't seen a trailer for Selma, Imitation Game, Theory of everything etc until I heard all the buzz around them. I think Nightcrawler is the only one that had oscar buzz that I'd seen a trailer for way in advance of the film coming out.

The Judge is exactly the kind of film that relies as much on reviews as star power because of the subject matter and because it's main target audience skews older. The reviews coming early out of TIFF hurt it but those that did see it seemed to like it, it had rather good legs. Several other prestige dramas coming out of the TIFF with bad reviews (some scathing) were DOA and never got a wide opening they were projected to get.

Very true about the Asian market though it will probably perform best in China where the studio gets the least amount of money back. :csad:

Yeah The Judge also had Robert Duval in it and is a better movie as a whole.

Let's just ignore all that in favor of "Teh it's He worth fault" yada yada yadda.

I thought that was why he was given sexiest man alive in People, because they were predicting him to be big this year, with three movies. He sure didn't have anything going on in 2014 to merit that title.

I never thought Blackhat looked good from the previews and stayed away..
Although I am quite sure it will show a profit when its final Worldwide numbers start rolling in....
As for Heart of the Sea I am really looking forward to that one....
By the way American sniper was excellent....Cried like a Baby during the credits...

That's too bad about Blackhat. For what it's worth, a read a couple of reviews that said Hemsworth was good, but surrounded by a bad film (I also read reviews that didn't say that, of course...).

I'm more bummed about Heart of the Sea moving! I'm really looking forward to that.

I thought it opens in March..

It got moved to december, reportedly because it was so well received by people who had seen it, and so it's been moved to oscar season.

Wondering whether this means it will be shown at a film festival now
