I thought the writing was the weakest part of UC3. It wasnt nearly as structured, smooth or cohesive as UC2. The story had several holes which dont get answered with twists seemingly introduced just for the sake of having twists. For the most part, everything in UC2 made sense and had a very natural transition as the story progressed. I actually wasnt a big fan of all the over the top and convenient theatrics [blackout](the whole segment of Drake surviving that plane crash or being washed ashore exactly where Elena would be come to mind). [/blackout]Those really took me out of the experience and came across very unrealistic in what is otherwise a tale very grounded in reality (those supernatural elements being the exception). I didnt feel the underlying motivations were particuarly strong enough, like Marlowe's purpose. We find out towards the end but you spend the bulk of the game not knowing what she's chasing Drake after for and when you do find out, I thought that was dumb. The writing was at its strongest when it came to exploring Drake and Sully but it leaves everyone else underdeveloped and leaving you wanting more. I didnt get that feeling in UC2, which was solid from beginning to end in terms of the story they were trying to tell.
I agree, although I think that the writing is still stronger in 3, it just might come across weaker because they were shooting for more. 1 and two are both solid stories, but with really only one layer to them. Three tries to be more, but only succeeds with the Nate and Sully story, while the rest is pretty similar to the other two games. Still, it's a far more impressive attempt than what they did for either of the first two. But it's way that they write it that's more impressive. IE, Nate's backstory with Sully, where Sully asks about his parents, and Nate just responds that they probably don't care where he is. This is a great, subtle phrase that isn't specific but gets you to completely get and empathize with Nate without it being "Oh, they're dead and I'm an orphan!" which is the typical video-game style.

All these games have great writing, I just appreciate the extra step they took to try and actually have a theme that's integral to Nate's being, that they were able to mostly successfully weave into both the narrative AND the gameplay. A rare feat. I never felt like there was much of a reason behind anything they did in the first games as far as motivation. It was all pretty one-dimensional. Marlowe's purpose was at least entwined with Drake, whereas the other games just had 'power-driven' villains. There was just a lot more cohesiveness to this story, the other characters actually being related or impactful to Drake's being, rather than just being obstacles.

I've only played through it once, so my opinion might (and probably will) change upon my second play-through. These are just my initial impressions. But I'd say that while UC1 and UC2 might have had few to no issues, they just didn't push the boundaries of video game writing the way this one did. This tried to be more than just a fun adventure, and for that I tip my hat to them.

seems like what i remember from the series is. uncharted 1 was gameplay, part 2 was story and gameplay and multiplayer, part 3 is story and multiplayer.

Did anyone get all the treasures? I'm almost there with 92.

I did, but I used a guide. It takes way too long to find them on my own. :o

i just collect what i can find i think i will do that in my next playthrough in the campaign

I do too. Then I go through again on very easy with a guide to pick up the rest.

Yeah, I usually find whatever I can on my first playthrough, then I'll go use a guide and go through each chapter until I get the last one in that chapter and then I just save, quit and move on. I got 40 so far, but I'm going to wait to finish off the treasures and trophies since I'm busy with so many other games right now. After that, I'm going to play through each game in order on crushing to finally get the Platinum for each of them.

Crushing is the last thing I need for my platinum on Uncharted 1, but I don't think I'll ever actually get around to it. Crushing's hard to the point that it's not even fun to play the game anymore. :o

I thought hard was pretty hard in U2 so I stopped after I got to the village. But then after playing U3 and seeing how much stealth and melee were a factor, some parts became ridiculously easy to once I realized that there were many opportunities to take out guys easily. But I can't remember if it was the same in the first one.

I've been enjoying running up to people and meleeing the s*** out of them over shooting in co-op. But I hate those un-melee-able guys who sneak up on you.

I always try to find as much as I can, never once used the guide. I'm replaying UC3 for a third time, just missing 8 treasures!

Finished it a few days ago. Put me in the underwhelmed camp. It was still a fun game, but the story didn't feel as tight to me as U2. I think part of it was Marlowe. I thought we might get some backstory on her and Sully but she disappeared for half the game. The ending confused the hell out of me.

So Sully gets shot. Except not. Because Nate drank the water. So he was hallucinating. But then Sully also drank the water. And then Nate's fighting ghosts. But where's Sully this whole time if he wasn't shot? And then the whole city comes down like in U2, which was disappointing.

Actually no...

Sully never drank the water, he's clearly shown only splashing it on his face.

I would love to see that whole situation from Sully's point of view. To him, it must've seemed like Drake just went crazy, shot at a whole lot of nothing, and then jumped down that elevator shaft for no apparent reason.

I recently started Co-op and getting treasures in Co-op is freaking hard! It's just that I have so much stuff left to unlock and I need the treasures to do it! Naughty Dog, make treasures easier to get please!

Well I mean, it's not hard to get treasures per se, but let's say you are doing arena, it is hard to get anything besides that lame ass three medal pickup!

It took 23 hours...but I just platinumed this bad boy. That completes a trilogy of platinums for me, as I've platinumed all 3 Uncharted games! What a freaking fun series.

My last few trophies were Survivor (kill 75 doodz without dying...After beating the game on crushing, I decided to tackle that one on very easy difficulty. FYI, very easy difficulty is basically like playing the game with an invulnerability cheat.) and the last 2 treasure hunting trophies.

Crushing is actually really fun if you try to play in a thoughtful and skilled manner. You can't just run and gun, you actually have to be strategic and aim well, which added depth to the game and makes it a lot of fun. It's the same for all 3 games. It may be because I'm tenured with this series, but U3's crushing seemed the easiest, though there were some seriously hard parts (freaking Caravan stage and fire monsters, I'm looking at you!).

Now on to multiplayer!

Gonna try to finish this on Crushing Tomorrow i'm on the Boat Level so far don't know if it is possible but i will try

Believe it or not, shooting from the water in the large ship graveyard gun fight gives amazing mobility and access to cover. That and it's the best place to get the trophy for killing 20 doodz while swimming.

I'm working on that now, since it's my last one too I need for platinum of U1 as well.

I'm having nightmares about the ****ing Jet Ski level knowing I'm going to go through hell with it.

I'm really getting into the multiplayer, which is cool for me since I hardly ever do. I've even bought the Fortune Hunter's Season pass thing, so playing MP with U2 Drake's skin or UDF Drake.

I am trying to get Drake's AK-47, needing one final treasure to complete the "End of Death" treasure set...but for some reason I keep picking up the second treasure that I've already found like 3 times. What the hell?

I'm behind you guys so I'm just on my first play though on normal. I just finished the awesome level where you have to escape the sinking ship, that set piece living up the hype plus the scene with Elena straight after = Gaming Nirvana! :D

Now I'm about to start 'One Shot At This' which I know leads to the big plane sequence. :awesome:

One level I really loved was the prequel level that showed how Nate and Sully met.

Just beat the game on crushing. Ive heard of people having issues with the "boss" but I didnt find him any harder on this than normal.

Maybe this deserves its own thread, but what do you guys want to see Naughty Dawg do next? Another Uncharted, Jak and Daxter or a new IP? Personally, I wanna see them in charge of an actual Indiana Jones game, haha.

Another Uncharted definitely, eager to know what's instore for Drake next.

I'd love for ND to hit up Jak 4 next. Make it their PS3 swansong - a brilliantly fun platformer that's a love letter to the days before they became one of gaming's biggest developers.

When it comes to PS4, I'd love them to break themselves into the tech with a new IP and then, bam, Uncharted 4, the last game in the series and a completely incredible entry. We can live off of Sony Bend's Uncharted Vita titles until then.
