Condon has made as many bad movies as he has good ones.

So has Ridley Scott, but there are so many out there that worship the ground he walks on. I have all the faith in the world in Condon's Bride. Gods and Monsters is a wonderful film. Mr. Holmes and Beauty and the Beast were quite good as well. I think Condon is going to do a fantastic job.

Ridley Scott, for all his errors, has made some of the best movies to ever grace cinema. So its not a little different, its a lot different. Unless you think Condon has a Blade Runner or Alien on his resume. A Gladiator? Perhaps its his two Twilight movies or The Fifth Estate.

I just listed three really good Condon films and you throw three of his duds at me. Not sure why you're rooting so hard for Universal to fail here like they've personally wronged you.

I am not rooting for anything. I said he has made as many bad movies as he has made good ones. That is what I said, and then you confirmed it. Then you came with Ridley Scott, the guy who made Blade Runner and Alien, and has three Best Director Oscar nominations. Like they are remotely similar.

I get you want this to succeed, that doesn't mean others have to play the sun is shining and everything is great game. Nor does it mean I have ordered a Mafia hit on this series.

Dark Universe is far from dead but that said I highly doubt Uni gives any of these films to first time directors going forward

I struggle to comprehend the carelessness in which they have handled things thus far between The Mummy and Dracula Untold.

this will ahve to do great overseas to make any money

So let's see:

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Dracula
Frankenstein
The Bride of Frankenstein
The Creature from the Black Lagoon
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
The Invisible Man
The Mummy
The Phantom of the Opera
The Wolf Man

Do they actually have a plan? Because unless I'm mistaken, the next film up is The Bride of Frankenstein, and that's not due out until 2019. What exactly is the timetable here?

they dont have a plan they are just trying to make a horror version of the avengers

I often wonder how first time directors keep getting handed the keys to these multimillion dollar (potential) blockbuster-type films. Sometimes it works out (Kong: Skull Island) but more often than not, it's a mess. Kurtzman at least has some clout because he's been in the business for a long time as a screenwriter. But then you have guys like Carl Rinsch (a director with such a tiny resume that he doesn't even have a Wikipedia page) who got handed nearly $200 million to make a 47 Ronin movie. Seriously, how does this happen?

I struggle to comprehend that they thought they could turn Universal Monsters into their own version of the MCU in this way. But that's Hollywood for you.

I know that the older Universal horror films crossed over, but it didn't work or operate like the MCU which is based on Marvel comics and crossovers that existed in an established shared universe where you have the forces of good battling the forces of evil.

Man, if these films had been period piece, hard-R horror films...goodness. My interest would've been through the roof.

I think if it was something more akin to Bram Stoker's Dracula the premise might have worked.

The 1992 Dracula movie is flawed, but I think it works at being dark and violent and evoking that dark sense of dread. There is actually some humor in Bram Stoker's Dracula, but it's more of a dark, twisted sense of humor. Like gallows humor that fits the setting a lot more.

Penny Dreadful same thing, and that smooshes a bunch of these genre icons together in one story.

I don't think they had to be period pieces. But the films fail to invoke a dark ominous sense of foreboding dread. The Mummy isn't really a horror film.

Nah, they didn't need to be period pieces. That's just my personal thing. Would've set them apart visually from the other players and just been more interesting to me. More than anything, just wish the universe had more of the "dark ominous sense of foreboding dread" that you mention. Maybe it will after The Mummy though.

I think making them period pieces would've been more interesting. I think they kinda missed an opportunity there.
And they didn't have to necessarily be R but just darker more creepy

Where is the idea that the endgame here is a mega "crossover" movie coming from? Has the studio actually announced such a thing, or is this just an assumption people are making?

Might it not be as simple as that events from one film lead somewhat into another? Characters like Dr. Jekyll and Van Helsing could cross over into various films. I don't think there necessarily needs to be a major "teamup" of monsters at the end of all this. Just a sort of "creature phenomenon" that keeps unfolding from film to film in the universe of the movies.

The studio hasn't said they're gonna do a big team up. They've just said it's all part of the same universe.

They are going to team up to bring down Cthulhu and the Old Gods. Cthulhu will be the Thanos of the Dark Universe ;)

hmmm assumeption I think it was mostly the interview they did withthe mommy to the news out lets. and every place reporting about to even gamer news be side the canadand version of the scifi channel called the space channel withtheir Daily inner space news period said and they all say the same thing as this video article from IGN they told the news out lets it'll be a shared universe. it's wrapped around that organization presidium with as that video from EPN. I put up them saying this. they study capture and contain and destory pure evil. and there's mix of science fiction with old school supernatural elements.
it's just every where and the source is the studio. or the made it seem that man go look at you tube . if this is assumption it's weird
