Universal Developing The Night of the Hunter Remake

Based on the novel and 1955 film about a murderous ex-con during the Great Depression who marries and murders a woman whose husband hid 10,000.00 and his attempts to get rid of her children in order to get the money.

Three of the all time greats, the film, Laughton, and Mitchum. Good luck.

As much as I mostly agree with that, remaking a 1955 thriller ain't the "deadest" decision they can make. As long as they follow the Thing, Scarface and Fly handbook and hand it over to a filmmaker who can do something fresh and interesting with the material I'm in.

We say that now until they cast somebody that we like or a director that we like.

Yup. That's what I hope. I always have an open mind until there's a director on board. If I don't like the director involves, that's when I'll write a project off.

I appreciate your open mindedness but that's unlikely. There's a reason only so few remakes have even pulled that off. Even if it was good for what it's trying to do, there is not a chance in hell this will even match the original in quality.

It could be worse, it could be a 13 episode TV show on Netflix.

Well, to be fair, if you can't remake a movie from almost 70 years ago and recontextualize it, then what CAN you remake?

And there are a lot more remakes which in my opinion are well done, such as Martin Scorsese's Cape Fear and The Departed, James Mangold's 3:10 to Yuma, Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead, Craig Gillespie's Fright Night, Lars Klevberg's Child's Play, the Coen's True Grit, and probably many more, as well.

So I wouldn't write it off so quickly without even knowing what talent the studio is looking for to make the movie.

Now, if they picked someone like Jeff Wadlow I'd agree with you, but it's too soon to make such judgement in my opinion.

I hope I don't come off as condescending, just trying to explain myself.

A positive of a remake is that it could potentially get younger people knowledge of the original to seek out.

I doubt many people under 30 have seen Night of the Hunter and hopefully, if the new film even happens, that’ll bring more attention to it.

You remake the bad movies or you have a great director who has a very unique vision and can say something different while staying true to the original's idea. Now you're saying this is possible, and it always is, I guess where we disagree on is even at this moment I have no faith they can make this a possibility given the success to failure ratio of these. It'll be a miracle if they can get someone on the level of those other guys. Also those great remakes came about because the filmmakers came in with a take. It wasn't so cynical like the vibes I get from this.

Fair enough. I guess time will tell. Fingers crossed they get a great filmmaker on board.

Scorsese's Cape Fear and Killer Joe are the only Night of the Hunter remakes I need

Laughton's and Mitchum's are immense shoes to fill. The original is a fantastic movie with an incredible performance from Mitchum. I'll watch the announcements for this, but I don't expect I'll be excited or even interested.
