Don't care if this thread is not necessary, I'm just so curious about this:

As you know, Irffan Khan is playing Van Atter, and many people thought that he was gonna turn into Proto-goblin in the movie, but Irffan stated in an interview that he didn't want to become another masked villain or a creature. Sooo, that pretty much counts him turning to Proto-Goblin out...

Do you guys have any theories about his part in the story? What kind of connection could he have to Peter parker, and what kind of impact could he make on Peter's/Spiderman's life?
If you have theories about these, I would love to know! :woot:

I almost forgot all about his character, there’s been so, much talk an attention on lizard speculation lately…(I remember everyone talking a bout the proto-type goblin theory, but, I never bought into it)

I believe that he well be a scientist (an represent Oscorp, in this movie) maybe he works with Connors, or perhaps just founding his experiments (with his own secret agenda, for how to use it)
I also do think maybe there well be hints at, or references to him being involved with the proto-type goblin project (tho, probably not a direct connection, or will it be call that)

He will be more of a behind the scene villain (if you can even call him that)

Hmm... gotta say that's a good theory

Well, I know he said what he don't want to do; but that does not mean he's not contracted to do it. Just he prefer not to. Just another actor who want his mug seen in a big budget blockbuster.

So, just because he says, he don't want to do X... does that mean X won't happen; and, will Sony just cow to a contracted actor like that, and not replace him?

Exactly. I don think it matters if he wants to or not. If the director says "You are going to be wearing a mask and have special effects," then that it what is going to happen.

I would love to see him working alongside Connors but I think what'd be even better is at the end of the movie he hands the sample of the Goblin serum to Norman (whoever they get to play Norman). Hell, they don't even have to show the actor. Just have Adder bring the serum to Norman's desk and have Norman facing the window in his chair. And just have him say, "Thank you, Van Adder. It's time we put this to the test" or something like that.

Sort of a "Batman Begins"-moment that'll lead into the second movie and have it where the sequel starts a few seconds after the first ala "Iron Man 2."

That sounds awesome :wow: I would have chills if that happened! :awesome:

Good point Hobgoblin

How weird would it be if Proto-Goblin still turned out to be in the movie? lol

Yeah, it would be a total surprise, and not just to us Spiderman fans but I think it would surprise general audience a lot too.
Heck I didn't even no about protogoblin until this...

I can just imagine it now..
friend poking my arm in theater, "Sooo, who the hell is this character?"

It depends, if Sony/director ask him to be in the film (studios/directors sometimes seek out specific people they want), I'm sure who he would/wouldn't play was discussed before his pen hit the paper.

I dont know if Khan is that popular of an actor that he would be sought out. I know he was in Slumdog Millionaire but what else? I dont know if he had much of a choice in being cast, as he seems pretty negative about it every time he talks about it.

Well, Rhys Ifans isn't really a popular actor either and he is playing the main villain. So I don't think it really matters here if Khan is popular or not

How do we know that Rhys Ifans picked the role?

That's all Sony needs, they're going for talent not popularity, leave that to Spider-Man. I'm damn sure Sony sought him out, strictly based on his performance in Slumdog Millionaire. And it was probably Sony who found a role for him after he stated that he was interested, but not interested in being masked or a CGI type character.

I remember reading in an interview when he was first announced, that he was cast based on his performance in a movie, he has coming out (Anonymous..? I think) so, they probably have some insight, in believing that movie will be successful, and will put his name back out there, so, that by the time the this movie comes out, he will be popular (it looks like he already has a few movies lined up to come out in the over next year 2, so, it would seem his career is on the raise)

I mean, even with, Andrew, they cast him before, the social network, came out, cause, they knew it would be popular (but, at the time be wasn't well-known)

HAHA ok:dry:

Why do people WANT proto-goblin so bad? We haven't seen many of Spidey's classic villains on the big screen yet, and people want some random lame villain who was in one flashback issue in the 90's?

They wanted Norman to have a lab assistant, and rather than creating a new name they used the name of some very minor character from the comics. That's it, I feel.

That's propably it. Here's what I think is going to happend:
He is a lab assistant of dr. Connors, but after the lizard fiasco he leaves his job with dr. Connors and in the end they show him trying to get a job at Oscorp, and that's where we will see the cameo of Norman Osborn

It would seem out of left field to have him as a second villain, but it could be a chance for Marc Webb to show us how to properly do a Goblin character.

I'm REALLY curious as to who Van Atter will be in this film. Probably an Oscorp worker.

Yeah, but I think he will have an improtant role in the story, one way or another. Could he be at least the guide on the Oscorp fieldtrip, where Peter gets bitten by the spider?

I was just thinking, what if this "Van Atter" character wont be the same as Nels Van Adder? I mean, if this Van Atter is indeed Nels Van Adder, then why did they cast Irffan Khan? I just did a little research and found out that he is not indian, not even black, just a plain white american, here's a pic of him:

See?

Yeah, well Kingpin isn't black and neither is Nick Fury, but you wouldn't know that from Daredevil and Iron Man. So what's your point?
