Warner Bros Remakes 'The Bodyguard'

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros is rebooting its 1992 hit The Bodyguard, the film that paired Kevin Costner with Whitney Houston and became for its time one of the biggest global hits in studio history with a $411 million worldwide gross.

The film will be scripted by Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer, whose action comedy script Family Getaway made the 2010 Black List and is a priority project at Warner Bros. Dan Lin will produce through his Lin Pictures banner, and Mark Bauch is co-producer.

Scripted by Lawrence Kasdan and directed by Mick Jackson, the original was a fairly straight ahead tale of a Secret Service agent (Costner in a Steve McQueen homage, down to his hairstyle) drafted to protect a singing diva whose life has been threatened by a stalker, then falling for her in a way he fears is a distraction from his job. The new version is similar, including the love story, but here the bodyguard will be a former Iraq war veteran who gets the job protecting the star as his first gig after leaving the Army. He discovers that the world of Twitter, Google Maps and TMZ has made access to celebrities easier than ever, making the job more difficult than ever. The goal is to take a young female singer with global appeal and give her the platform that The Bodyguard did Houston.

It becomes the second music-driven remake for the studio, which just got a commitment from Clint Eastwood to direct Beyonce. The studio is in the process of landing the male star.

Lin just wrapped Sherlock Holmes 2, and is producing with Kevin McCormick Gangster Squad, which Ruben Fleischer will direct. He is also developing the LEGO Movie, which has Phil Lord and Christopher Miller attached to direct. The scribes are repped by UTA and Mosaic.

Well, okay. I'd only be interested if it's Lady Gaga protected by an aging agent who walked away from a destructive glam rocking career early, though secretly regrets it, played by David Bowie. Nic Cage would play the killer

Starring Rutger Hauer as Van Helsing and Kevin Costner as Pa Kent.

If you want to blame anyone, blame me!

For I've been writing to WB for the past 4 years, demanding a Bodyguard remake!

Poor Kevin Costner. First a new Robin Hood and now The Bodyguard.

I smell a Postman reboot next.

Seriously, what I liked about the original was it was a "mature" love story. Although Houston was pretty young at the time (I think under 30), Costner was almost 40. Hopefully they pick a male actor at least in his 30s but from the description it sounds like they're going for The Bodyguard: The College Years.

Well, Robin Hood has been around for centuries. And there were 15 Robins before him from TV and films.

The Bodyguard? It just doesn't strike me as a film that needs a reboot.

Superhero movies, you expect a reboot... because that's what they do in the comics all the time. And the characters are more important than the particular stories that are being told, so there is always room to tell more and more.

The Bodyguard reboot?

Does that mean that they will be having the same characters names and backgrounds, and the same twist of it being the sister?

Or do they just mean they are going to make another movie about a celebrity getting death threats, hireing and bodyguard and then falling in love with him?

Why remake? 'The Bodyguard' is a classic, one of the best Kevin Costner films.

:(

I just think they should only remake movies, when the original has become dated in some way.

Like action movies, where the CGI is primitive.

The Bodyguard doesn't need a revamp. It's perfect just the way it is, and still relevant to a modern audience. What could they possibly do that would make the story better?

i remember hearing about this years ago with Miley Cyrus and Hugh Jackman (falsely) rumored for the leads

Maybe it will be Rihanna.

Yeah, I know that's incredibly old news but just had to throw it out there. :oldrazz::woot:

*clears throat* ANNNNNNNNNNNNDDDDD IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII WOOOOUUUUUUULLLLLD NEEEEVER WAAAAAATCH THAAAAAT!!!!!!!! :awesome: :oldrazz:

Willow Smith and uh... Channing Tatum?

I like that the film will deal with blogs, facebook, twitter, papparazzi.

Probably going to be Miley Cyrus or something.

The original is pretty good and I dont see this remake being as good.

I don't see this movie creating a buzz without the interacial romance angle and a killer soundtrack. Those are the only reasons the first one made a dent.

It's going to be Beyonce. I'm calling it right now.

And she'll play the body guard. AAAAND the singer.

I love the original, call it a guilty pleasure or whatever but I think it's a good thriller with a decent central love story, some drama, tension and a great soundtrack.

Having said that I have no issue with a remake, I'd have preferred they didn't go with a signer again but so bet it, the angle of how much more difficult it is to [protect a star today is a good approach and clearly they have to change the original films twist.

The key is in the casting, as mentioned earlier in the thread the original had a mature singer at the center of it, so as long as we don't see Shia protecting Miley Cyrus or Taylor Swift then they are on the right track.

Maybe it will be Rihanna.

Has she been mentioned before or something? because actually she seems the most likely candidate to me, a little younger than I'd go for but out of the singer options out there Rihanna has the best crossover appeal IMO.

Beyonce is doing 'A Star Is Born' with Clint Eastwood directing.

Channing Tatum as the body guard and miley cyrus as the singer.

Calling it now.
