saw this last night, really liked it a lot but i wish it didnt end like that in that it was so abrupt? i had some many questions after the movie that i wanted to know the answers to.

did he get his job back for instance lol

I'm an individual who needs closure, for everything, as painful as it may be. Yet, for this film, I think it's better, for us the audience, to not exactly see or hear what happens next.

In reality, Tommy gets court-martialed and goes to jail, Brendon pays off his debt, Paddy goes back home alone, both Tommy and Brendon have a long ways to go in repairing their relationship, etc. Considering what followed though, I assume the general audience was spared from a far more depressing conclusion.

The director mentioned that he did not want to end the movie with a 'happy' ending, instead he wanted an open and 'realistic' ending.

Also think about it this way though...REALISTICALLY, the media would be all over a story like this.

Tommy would only serve a few months at best, and Brennan and Paddy and everyone involved would be riding the gravy train for media appearances, interviews, etc.

This would be the beginning of a whole different world for the Conlon family that could, once again, make or break this family.

Realistically, I don't think Tommy would have gone to jail, arrested yes but he would have gotten off. Brennan would have paid off his debts and would have given money to the lady Tommy was going to. The personal relationships between the 2 brothers and their father would take a while to repair but I think it was apparent at the end of the movie that they would all be willing to try and repair it. I loved the ending, it makes us think about what would happen to the characters. I got the blu ray of this movie for christmas and the special features are incredible. I love it when an amazing movie gets amazing special features.

Tommy would definitely serve some time, a few months at minimum.

Going AWOL from the military is no joke...

that makes a lot of sense and was probably done for that exact same reason

i haven't watched the Special Features yet but I watched the gag reel, which i didn't care much for

very much so

The ambiguity in the ending was definitely for the best.

I think the open ending is more powerful. They could of added a scene with the family sitting together but I don't think it would of fit.

I just saw this movie this week, it really killed me. :csad:

Yeah I didn't like the gag reel at all. The making of is pretty awesome and really insightful. The audio commentary is great and the blu ray type commentary is also pretty awesome. A great bunch of special features.

Such a great film. Easily in my top 10 of the year, and it's a crime if Tom Hardy is ignored at Oscar time (which I'm sure he will be, unfortunately). He was brilliant in this film, as were Nolte and Edgerton.

^i agree his performance is extremely underrated

everyone of his scenes with nolte is very powerful

that opening scene in the house is really good where tom is essentially acting with just his eyes looking at the pictures

very powerful

but to be honest nolte deserves it more so if 1 actor gets nominated it should be Nolte

All 3 of them deserve a nomination. They all deliver very powerful performances but Nolte definitely deserves the win. He is so amazing as a damaged father who just keeps getting torn down by his sons. That casino scene followed up by the hotel scene, wow it hits you and it hits you hard. Hardy is just ridiculous, acting at its finest he's so bad ass on the outside but if you look at his eyes, he almost has like puppy dog eyes where you can see this young innocence in them but he's been through so much and he is on a mission for his fallen comrade's wife. I really wish people would give Edgerton more credit than he is getting. He probably plays the most straight person out of them all but his scenes with his wife, the beach scene and final minutes of his fight with Tommy are just phenomenal to watch. He is able to get very emotional without going too sappy. I really hope he starts to get much more work after this because I really want to see him in more movies.

He did it because of a friendly fire incident. There's no way the military is going to embarrass itself like that.

Plus he saved a man who was going to die and it became a big media circus. No court would want that bad publicity especially for a war hero.

I liked Nolte but this role almost seemed like one he could do in his sleep at this point. Not saying that he was sleepwalking through his performance here - he was fully committed to this part - just saying that I've seen him play broken down drunks so many times that of the three main characters, he "wowed" me the least. Hardy, however, blew me away.

Good to see people are finally watching this film on DVD. No one was around when this film came out in the theaters. Only the die-hards :)

Doesn't matter what his reasoning was, going AWOL is a serious offense.

And I'm sure Tommy would get commended for his actions but at the same time, he did desert his squad. And the military would have no choice but to follow protocol.

oh i didn't want a family scene really, that would've felt forced to me

it wouldve been cool to see Brendan and show up walking into the class with some bandages on his face after he got his job back.

No, the publicity of him saving his unit and video being caught of it will alone set him free and be given a honorable discharge

Brendan won tons of money...He can get any other job he wants. The point of the film was about Tommy and Brendan and their paths finally crossing and how two brothers finally learn to accept each other

And their alcoholic father being happy about it

i know, but he seemed like he was very passionate about his job and his students cared a lot about him. the abc family version definitely would've had a scene like that haha

True, with the Principal also inviting him for a surprise visit to the Gym auditorium where a crowd of students and faculty applause in emotional fashion with tears down Brendan's eyes and the main theme for "Remember the Titans" is playing in the background.

:awesome:
