saw this last night, really liked it a lot but i wish it didnt end like that in that it was so abrupt? i had some many questions after the movie that i wanted to know the answers to.
did he get his job back for instance lol
I'm an individual who needs closure, for everything, as painful as it may be. Yet, for this film, I think it's better, for us the audience, to not exactly see or hear what happens next.
In reality, Tommy gets court-martialed and goes to jail, Brendon pays off his debt, Paddy goes back home alone, both Tommy and Brendon have a long ways to go in repairing their relationship, etc. Considering what followed though, I assume the general audience was spared from a far more depressing conclusion.
The director mentioned that he did not want to end the movie with a 'happy' ending, instead he wanted an open and 'realistic' ending.
Realistically, I don't think Tommy would have gone to jail, arrested yes but he would have gotten off. Brennan would have paid off his debts and would have given money to the lady Tommy was going to. The personal relationships between the 2 brothers and their father would take a while to repair but I think it was apparent at the end of the movie that they would all be willing to try and repair it. I loved the ending, it makes us think about what would happen to the characters. I got the blu ray of this movie for christmas and the special features are incredible. I love it when an amazing movie gets amazing special features.
Tommy would definitely serve some time, a few months at minimum.
Going AWOL from the military is no joke...
i haven't watched the Special Features yet but I watched the gag reel, which i didn't care much for

^i agree his performance is extremely underrated
everyone of his scenes with nolte is very powerful
that opening scene in the house is really good where tom is essentially acting with just his eyes looking at the pictures
very powerful
but to be honest nolte deserves it more so if 1 actor gets nominated it should be Nolte
He did it because of a friendly fire incident. There's no way the military is going to embarrass itself like that.
I think the open ending is more powerful. They could of added a scene with the family sitting together but I don't think it would of fit.
oh i didn't want a family scene really, that would've felt forced to me
it wouldve been cool to see Brendan and show up walking into the class with some bandages on his face after he got his job back.
Brendan won tons of money...He can get any other job he wants. The point of the film was about Tommy and Brendan and their paths finally crossing and how two brothers finally learn to accept each other
And their alcoholic father being happy about it
i know, but he seemed like he was very passionate about his job and his students cared a lot about him. the abc family version definitely would've had a scene like that haha
