Homecoming Was the 2012 reboot pointless?

"You can call me Webhead, you can call me amazing, just don't call me late for dinner, get it?" What the heck does that even mean? "Not a shaker... Are you a hugger?" that one just doesn't work. "Glad you're not one of those cops that rides a horse." that one is more awkwardly funny & extremely random. Bad quips imo.

This quip was actually pretty funny imo. Definitely funnier than some of Holland's. I don't see why you think it was random.

I laughed at most of Garfield's quips in ASM2, they were all pretty good. But I didn't really find Holland's quips to be that funny, they weren't even really quips. He sounded more like a nervous idiot during the airport fight, which given how much it was implied that he needed tom impress Stark, I think that was the point.

Pretty much this. I enjoyed Holland's portrayal and he's more than likely on his way to becoming the definitive and my favorite Spider-Man, but it seems like people just hate on Garfield to hate on Garfield.

I don't hate on Garfield, I hate on the scripts he had to work with.
The only laugh out loud quip he had in both movies was "you've found my weakness, it's small knives". The ones in ASM 2 especially were pretty bad. Tom might've been able to sell them better with his lighter voice and youthful energy, but I don't think he could've made them funny.

'Sparkles' is a good quip, it reminds me of 'Lightning Butt'

Sparkles was one of the worst ones. 95% of his quips sucked.

"I will control everything, and I will be like a god to them"

"a god named sparkles?"

Come on guys, I couldn't stand ASM 2 but that legit made me laugh out loud

I'll say this, I actually believe that one of the best moments in any Spider-man movie happened in ASM 2 when he walked the kid home after he saved him from being beat up and was chatting with him about his science project. That was actually pretty great.

I love that bit.
That was inspired by a moment from the Amazing Spider-Man 246, a Roger Stern issue.

Is it sad that there's not one line from Peter/Spidey in any of the 5 Spider-Man movies that made me laugh out loud? Small grins at best, kinda sad.

Oh please, if Tom would've said any of those quips Andrew said you guys would've eaten it up.

That's what I said before and it remains true, regardless how many try to discredit it.

I'd take that over Tom's "You have the right to remain silent!" when Falcon wasn't even speaking.

"You can call me Webhead, you can call me amazing, just don't call me late for dinner, get it?" What the heck does that even mean?

It's old school.

The joke is (like most wordplay) a matter of establishing expectations and then dashing them, or (more to the point) a broken parallelism. In the first part, you're invited to call the person by first name/last name/title/nickname/whatever you like (but the expectation is that it will be some sort of name); in the second part, you're told not to call the person "late for dinner". Your initial reaction is that "late for dinner" is some sort of nickname, but in fact it means "call me for dinner - but on time, please!" The actual meaning is not important as long as it's unexpected, so there are a few variations; I've heard "just don't call me long-distance."

Not a shaker... Are you a hugger?" that one just doesn't work.

Let's just keep in mind this happened:

Completely in tune with Spidey.

"Glad you're not one of those cops that rides a horse." that one is more awkwardly funny & extremely random. Bad quips imo.

Hmm..

Compared to Tom's Spidey who is more wise-cracker:

Andrew was too, but alright.

"You have a metal arm? That is awesome, dude!" hilarious

Obvious. He's stating what everyone thinks of Bucky. Not so funny as it is just obvious. Did good nailing that this was just a kid, though.

"You have the right to remain silent!! classic Spidey.

Cringy, as Falcon wasn't even speaking when he said that.

"Are those wings carbon fibre" ":spidey: geek Spidey.

That was fine.

"Falcon: There's usually not this much talk." Spidey: Alright, sorry, my bad."

That was fine.

I love how he doesn't come off as a somebody who is desperately trying to be funny like Garfield in TASM2.

Except you forget that Spider-Man isn't always trying to be funny. He just keeps things going to distract his enemies and to hide his fear. That's always been the case with him. Just because something isn't necessarily funny doesn't mean it didn't work within the context. He's more awkward funny than laugh out loud funny more often than not, and that's abundantly clear in the earlier runs of TASM. Ultimate had some funny bits, sure, but even that served as some awkwardness too.

Holland's quips were fine in some regards, but others they were just as odd as some claim Garfield's was. The "holy sh**" moment was the highlight, though.

It's always been that way, though. :oldrazz:

'Sparkles' is a good quip, it reminds me of 'Lightning Butt'

That was fantastic. His little moment where he was telling himself to shake it off and that it was just his legs, organs, etc. was classic, too.

I not only laughed at his outfit when he was sick, but I always rewind the part where he tries unsuccessfully to say his name. That was gold.

I'll say this, I actually believe that one of the best moments in any Spider-man movie happened in ASM 2 when he walked the kid home after he saved him from being beat up and was chatting with him about his science project. That was actually pretty great.

Yeppers!

There is a moment within the overlong mess of a film that is Amazing Spider-Man 2 that really nails the essence of the character. A young bespectacled boy is fleeing from some bullies and they knock down his science project. They attempt to smash it and nearly succeed before they're interrupted by our titular hero. The boys scurry off and Spidey and the young fellow are left alone. He scoops up the remains of the project and actually puts it back together with webbing. "A wind turbine?! You made this? That is amazing!" The smile on the child's face could light up an entire city block and there's a great long shot of them walking down the alley as the Webhead escorts him home.

THAT is Spider-Man.

In general:

I know TASM2 isn't highly regarded around here and some of it deservedly so but you can't tell me there weren't some highlights that just 'got' the character. A good portion of it captured everything we love about the character and that was in the "worst" Spider-Man movie yet.

Spider-Man's quips are not supposed to be laugh-out-loud funny. Though sometimes they are, that misses the point of their intended purpose. He annoys his enemies to the point of frustration and copes with his fear of being in a fight.

I enjoyed the majority of the quips coming from Garfield's Spidey in ASM2. He had a great delivery of his lines and his kinetic energy while in the suit was spot on. The biggest detractor was when he was delivering all these quips while people were being killed in that opening truck chase scene. He seemed more intent on trying to be funny or witty rather, when he should have been saving those folks by stopping the truck.

Though I'll say, so far, Holland has impressed me more. And I'm tired of people making the assumption that because I happen to have that opinion, it has something to do with Marvel studios and just wanting to trash on the earlier versions of the character. It simply isn't true.

Completely in tune with Spidey.
Just because Spidey makes a silly remark in another story doesn't excuse another. Besides, that gag worked in the contex, TASM2 Hugger quip didn't.

Andrew was too, but alright.
Yeah, Tom's are just funnier and less forced.

Obvious. He's stating what everyone thinks of Bucky. Not so funny as it is just obvious. Did good nailing that this was just a kid, though.
That's what was so funny about it. It was obvious & straightforward.

Cringy, as Falcon wasn't even speaking when he said that.
It was a really cool seeing him so lively, though.

Except that's not what was seemingly happening in the Truckchase. Spidey didn't seem to be trying to save lives by distracting him, he was CAUSING death & damage because of his attempt to make jokes. Lives were definitely lost because of his lame attempts to be funny. Less, "i'm trying to distract this guy so I can't stop him from getting away with the plutonium and prevent death & collateral damage" and more "I'm gonna make quips & joke around just because the fans want a more jokey Spider-Man."

Holland's quips were fine in some regards, but others they were just as odd as some claim Garfield's was. The "holy sh**" moment was the highlight, though.
Ehh... At least they were straightforward.

Nah.

I don't know, overall, I found Spider-Man annoying in TASM2, Tom is just better suited for the over-the-top nature of Spidey's humor.

There are always folks doing that nonsense, try to give them the deaf ear if you haven't already.

When did that happen??
After the dinner scene of Gwen and her family in a restaurant, when Peter mentioned how he can't be with her, and she said she's breaking up with him.
During that montage of Spider-Man in action, while radio talk explains people thoughts of him and his vigilantism, in that duration one person on radio was talking about he can't see his children safe with Spider-Man around.
It's around maybe 24 minutes mark.

I think that scene is beautiful.
Just because he stopped two bullies & walked a kid home? Uhh, okay? It's an inspirational scene for but I don't think It captures "everthing we love about the character" a little overrated imo. & besides, that kid got annoying in the third act with the dumb standoff scene between him & the Rhino.
You also think the Amazing Spider-Man 2 costume is horrid looking and completely off-putting.
That's right, utter garbage vomit inducing pig crap. Thank Marvel that abomination is gone forever. :barf:

Umm... I'm sorry you don't share my opinion?

And I think that scene is overrated.

It would have to be a highly praised scene for it to be called overrated. I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen people mention it, let alone praise it.
