It's funny cause it's true.
Not really
It's funny cause it's true.
"You can call me Webhead, you can call me amazing, just don't call me late for dinner, get it?" What the heck does that even mean? "Not a shaker... Are you a hugger?" that one just doesn't work. "Glad you're not one of those cops that rides a horse." that one is more awkwardly funny & extremely random. Bad quips imo.
I laughed at most of Garfield's quips in ASM2, they were all pretty good. But I didn't really find Holland's quips to be that funny, they weren't even really quips. He sounded more like a nervous idiot during the airport fight, which given how much it was implied that he needed tom impress Stark, I think that was the point.
Sparkles was great!

Oh please, if Tom would've said any of those quips Andrew said you guys would've eaten it up.

The joke is (like most wordplay) a matter of establishing expectations and then dashing them, or (more to the point) a broken parallelism. In the first part, you're invited to call the person by first name/last name/title/nickname/whatever you like (but the expectation is that it will be some sort of name); in the second part, you're told not to call the person "late for dinner". Your initial reaction is that "late for dinner" is some sort of nickname, but in fact it means "call me for dinner - but on time, please!" The actual meaning is not important as long as it's unexpected, so there are a few variations; I've heard "just don't call me long-distance."

Compared to Tom's Spidey who is more wise-cracker:
"You have a metal arm? That is awesome, dude!" hilarious
"You have the right to remain silent!! classic Spidey.
"Are those wings carbon fibre" "geek Spidey.
"Falcon: There's usually not this much talk." Spidey: Alright, sorry, my bad."
I love how he doesn't come off as a somebody who is desperately trying to be funny like Garfield in TASM2.

Pretty much this. I enjoyed Holland's portrayal and he's more than likely on his way to becoming the definitive and my favorite Spider-Man, but it seems like people just hate on Garfield to hate on Garfield.
'Sparkles' is a good quip, it reminds me of 'Lightning Butt'
I not only laughed at his outfit when he was sick, but I always rewind the part where he tries unsuccessfully to say his name. That was gold.
I'll say this, I actually believe that one of the best moments in any Spider-man movie happened in ASM 2 when he walked the kid home after he saved him from being beat up and was chatting with him about his science project. That was actually pretty great.
There is a moment within the overlong mess of a film that is Amazing Spider-Man 2 that really nails the essence of the character. A young bespectacled boy is fleeing from some bullies and they knock down his science project. They attempt to smash it and nearly succeed before they're interrupted by our titular hero. The boys scurry off and Spidey and the young fellow are left alone. He scoops up the remains of the project and actually puts it back together with webbing. "A wind turbine?! You made this? That is amazing!" The smile on the child's face could light up an entire city block and there's a great long shot of them walking down the alley as the Webhead escorts him home.
THAT is Spider-Man.

That's what I said before and it remains true, regardless how many try to discredit it.
I'd take that over Tom's "You have the right to remain silent!" when Falcon wasn't even speaking.
Just because Spidey makes a silly remark in another story doesn't excuse another. Besides, that gag worked in the contex, TASM2 Hugger quip didn't.Let's just keep in mind this happened:

Completely in tune with Spidey.
Yeah, Tom's are just funnier and less forced.Andrew was too, but alright.
That's what was so funny about it. It was obvious & straightforward.Obvious. He's stating what everyone thinks of Bucky. Not so funny as it is just obvious. Did good nailing that this was just a kid, though.
It was a really cool seeing him so lively, though.Cringy, as Falcon wasn't even speaking when he said that.
Except that's not what was seemingly happening in the Truckchase. Spidey didn't seem to be trying to save lives by distracting him, he was CAUSING death & damage because of his attempt to make jokes. Lives were definitely lost because of his lame attempts to be funny. Less, "i'm trying to distract this guy so I can't stop him from getting away with the plutonium and prevent death & collateral damage" and more "I'm gonna make quips & joke around just because the fans want a more jokey Spider-Man."Except you forget that Spider-Man isn't always trying to be funny. He just keeps things going to distract his enemies and to hide his fear. That's always been the case with him. Just because something isn't necessarily funny doesn't mean it didn't work within the context. He's more awkward funny than laugh out loud funny more often than not, and that's abundantly clear in the earlier runs of TASM. Ultimate had some funny bits, sure, but even that served as some awkwardness too.
Ehh... At least they were straightforward.Holland's quips were fine in some regards, but others they were just as odd as some claim Garfield's was. The "holy sh**" moment was the highlight, though.
Nah.In general:
I know TASM2 isn't highly regarded around here and some of it deservedly so but you can't tell me there weren't some highlights that just 'got' the character. A good portion of it captured everything we love about the character and that was in the "worst" Spider-Man movie yet.
There are always folks doing that nonsense, try to give them the deaf ear if you haven't already.Though I'll say, so far, Holland has impressed me more. And I'm tired of people making the assumption that because I happen to have that opinion, it has something to do with Marvel studios and just wanting to trash on the earlier versions of the character. It simply isn't true.
After the dinner scene of Gwen and her family in a restaurant, when Peter mentioned how he can't be with her, and she said she's breaking up with him. When did that happen??
You also think the Amazing Spider-Man 2 costume is horrid looking and completely off-putting.And I think that scene is overrated.
Just because he stopped two bullies & walked a kid home? Uhh, okay? It's an inspirational scene for but I don't think It captures "everthing we love about the character" a little overrated imo. & besides, that kid got annoying in the third act with the dumb standoff scene between him & the Rhino.I think that scene is beautiful.
That's right, utter garbage vomit inducing pig crap. Thank Marvel that abomination is gone forever. You also think the Amazing Spider-Man 2 costume is horrid looking and completely off-putting.
