WB Eyeing Justice League Movie

February 23, 2007

Warner Bros. Pictures is looking to make a feature based on super team the Justice League of America, hiring writing duo Kiernan and Michele Mulroney to write the script, reports Variety. It's the first major action the studio has taken on the project.

The feature film is bound to include some combination of DC's most iconic superheroes, although the studio wouldn't confirm which ones they might be. It's unlikely that the studio and DC Comics, a division of Warner, would opt to feature second-tier characters.

Since its inception in 1960, JLA has featured almost every major hero in the DC Comics universe, although the core team has largely remained the same: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter.

The heroes typically band together to fight alien menaces or groups of supervillains.

"The Justice League of America has been a perennial favorite for generations of fans, and we believe their appeal to film audiences will be as strong and diverse as the characters themselves," Warner president of production Jeff Robinov said in announcing the hiring of the Mulroneys.

The trade says that in taking on the ambitious project, Warner faces several conundrums.

Now that the Batman and Superman film franchises have been revived, does the studio go after Christian Bale (Batman Begins) and Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) to star in a Justice League pic? The studio is also trying hard to bring Wonder Woman to the big screen.

To a large degree, casting will depend upon the story arc for the JLA feature and at what point in the superheroes' lives the plot takes place.

Sounds to me like a desperate attempt by WB to jump-start the entire DC movie franchise structure. Hardly surprising since WW and Flash have gone back to square one, GL can't get moving at all, and inasmuch as I enjoy SR I hestitate to say Superman's film franchise has been 'revived'.

There ya go, there's the roster right there. I think they should stick with seven, too. Aquaman I'm not sure what they could do with to make him useful against alien invaders, though.

Well, I don't think the story should be any more complicated than the animated JL pilot. Not saying they should adapt that directly, but you can address their origins WITHOUT having to retell them elaborately.

wow. now that would be awesome.

Ooh. Some body start a Justice League casting thread.

Stanley Tucci is Dr. Fate
Jessica Simpson is Black Canary

They definitely gotta bring in Bale and Routh. I just can't see anyone else playing the parts. Definitely like the idea of this, though.

I would actually like to see Routh as Superman and Bale as Batman in almost mentor type roles to the rest of the heroes. The rest of the heroes, Flash, Wonder Woman...they would be younger and Superman and Batman would provide leadership and guidance. Could be fun.

That wouldn't work. They need to be around the same age range, if possible. Which I think not for sure. Bale is a little older than Routh. I believe he is.

I think this might be the first move in which we hear in the following weeks that MOS has been scrapped, and that JLA will come out in 2009 instead.
I like this move while a strange way to go a JLA movie could be good...
If done right, and by the right people...

heh maybe the WB will finally get their Jesus as Superman in JLA... :woot:

Why wouldn't it work? Why do they need to be the same age in the realm of the movie?

I don't think they are related in any way.

I don't think that we'll be seeing this in a long time. The Batman and Superman franchises have been restarted. Wonder Woman and the Flash are just getting off the ground....AGAIN! Green Lantern and Aquaman haven't even started yet.

Yeah, I think it'll still be a few years til this gets off the ground. We have The Dark Knight coming out next year, Man of Steel the following, and somewhere in there we'll most likely have Shawn Levy's Flash and Wonder Woman as well. My best guess would be a 2011 release.

If this were to happen ... WB would make a LOAD of money ... because we'd all go to see it. There's no way we wouldn't. It could honestly score 0% on rottentomatoes and we'd still go to see it.

I think it'll be even later than that. My guess is that the Flash will make it for a late 2008 release with Wonder Woman being a 2009 release with the Man of Steel. We'll then see Green Lantern and Aquaman get films. Hopefully one sequel for Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Aquaman. Then a JLA film.

They aren't necessarily going in that sequence. They may very well introduce new characters like Aquaman or GL in a JLA movie. In fact, if they want to avoid recasting Supes and Bats, it'd be much smarter to make a JLA movie soon, intro new characters and then have the 2nd generation of characters have their own movies.

That would totally blow and take away much of the JLA's epicness.

A JLA movie could signal the end of the Singer sequel if it's set for an 09 release so let's see what happens but I doubt there will be a Flash, GL, WW movie before a JLA movie.
The JLA movie would be used to push some characters which are not popular enough for mainstream fans to care about.
Who knows maybe the JLA movie will be a spin off from smallville for all we know.. lol They already are doing young JLA stuff on the show.
It would be easier to spin off that show then combine Routh/Bale into a movie...

Well the thing is, they've hired the guys to write the script right now. So even saying the film is four years away could be pushing it (depending on the quality of the script, getting a director, etc.)

this could be a dumb move by WB -- buti doubt it happens

I'd prefer a Batman/Superman movie to be honest. The JLA would be fantastic to see on screen dont get me wrong, but the likelyhood of this happening what with the flash and wonderwoman movies in development at the moment just causes all kinds of complications. A batman/superman could lead onto the JLA movie as a kindof sequel

I could see WB using a JLA movie in the same way Marvel/Fox are using FF2 to launch the Silver Surfer.
With a JLA movie they get to introduce the audience to the Flash,WW,GL.MM etc before putting them into solo movies.
