Jon Bernthal, Josh Charles, Jamie Hector To Star In ‘We Own This City’ – Deadline

Jon Bernthal, Josh Charles and Jamie Hector have been tapped as the leads of HBO’s We Own This City limited series, from The Wire’s EP David Simon and producer George Pelecanos. Reinaldo Marcus Green (Monsters and Men) is set to direct and executive produce the series, based on Baltimore Sun reporter Justin Fenton’s book We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops and Corruption. Production is set to begin in July.

The six-hour limited series chronicles the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force — and the corruption and moral collapse that befell an American city in which the policies of drug prohibition and mass arrest were championed at the expense of actual police work.

Britt-Gibson will play Jemell Rayam, one of the most brazen offenders caught up in the eventual federal corruption case. Brown plays Maurice Ward, another plainclothesman with the task force who was among the first to cooperate with prosecutors. Belcher will portray Momodu “G Money” Gondo, an 11-year BPD veteran and member of the task force, implicated in robberies, overtime fraud and other corrupt acts and was involved in protecting a heroin operation run by Antonio “Brill” Shropshire. Mitchell will play David McDougall, a veteran investigator with the Harford County Narcotics Task Force who, with Detective Scott Kilpatrick, began the casework on drug overdoses that set the GTTF probe in motion.

Oh man I love her. She needs a better role than the Loki one.

I'll look forward to this - cannot go wrong with David Simon.

The Wire is my favorite show ever so, yeah, you might say my body is ready.

just saw the trailer and it looks good.

Appreciate y'all not posting the trailer here - language and all.

Anyway, it honestly looks like it could be a sequel to The Wire to me, which definitely ain't a complaint. Just gotta get past Bernthal's....look. :funny:

Premiers tonight.

Gonna watch this after Saul. Looking forward to it.

This took me back back to that old golden age HBO. Not that HBO has missed a step since the early 2000’s but this show feels like it’s from that The Wire, The Sopranos era. Love it so far. David Simon you still on point.

It is literally impossible for me to watch this series and not imagine it as The Wire Season 6. Having finally finished that series a year or so ago, it's nice to see a lot of these actors back. Poot and Marlo really cleaned up their acts, looks like! The show itself? Very impressed with what I saw and will definitely be keeping up with this, but yeah...in the back of my mind, I'm gonna imagine this is either The Wire Season 6 or the two shows are connected, with a lot of the former drug players deciding to clean up their acts.

It makes me wonder, if Michael K. Williams was still alive, would he have been in this show?

Sadly, it doesn’t look like he would have been. Michael died in September 2021 and it looks like this show had pretty much finished casting by then. Would have been great to see him back on the streets of Baltimore though.

I need to make some time to check this out. I feel like I'm drowning in shows this week between this, Better Call Saul, Barry, Winning Time, Moon Knight, and Halo.

That was a quite good hour of TV. Will probably be a good setup to show how the Baltimore's gun trace taskforce which was created specifically to shift from drug focus policing to gun focus, but slowly lost their focus. It'll also probably delve into how this taskforce allowed plainclothes officers to work in the shadows with almost little accountability and independent review.

I looked up in imdb - wow, a lot of The Wire alumni - Jamie Hector ("Marlo Stanfield"), a slimmer Delaney Williams ("Sergeant Jay Landsman"), Anwan Glover ("Slim Charles"), Tray Chaney ("Poot") & Darrell Britt-Gibson ("O-Dog").

I finally found the time to watch the premiere and wow I definitely recommend this show if your a fan of peak era HBO shows like The Wire, Oz or The Sopranos because its that good IMO.

I haven't realized until now just how much I miss that era of shows, but it amazes me just how much the creators were able to recapture the grit and tension of something like The Wire all these years later.

Loved every minute of it and Bernthal is already the MVP of this show for me although I'm super curious to see what they do with Jamie Hector and bearded, badass looking David Corenswet.

And apparently the kid who played Donut is in this series at some point, too.
