I wonder if beyond a visit with Clark's mother if we will see much Smallville this time around.

I doubt it. We know there's a scene at the cemetery too but I feel like that'll be it.

Definitely some. I figure Ma Kent's "You don't owe these people anything" speech happens there.

I didn't think it was wise to begin Superman's first major action sequence as a disaster porn fight, and not in Smallville either. We saw Superman save Lois before he ever gets to be revealed as Superman to the rest of the world. The first time he's introduced and his first major action sequence was in a fight in Smallville. So the impression people got of him was that he was dangerous.

Clark Kent didn't adopt the secret identity till the end of the movie, or start working at the Daily Planet first before he became Superman. I know they wanted to do a different take and I respect that. Seeing things, plotlines that weren't necessarily the same as the traditional story, e.g. Krypton's people being genetically engineered, seeing Krypton explode after Kal-El's ship is sent away, Jor-El being killed by Zod...how Lois and Clark/Superman first meet...but this time he's just Clark/Kal-El when Lois meets him, and that...also Clark not becoming the reporter with glasses until the end of the movie.

I was okay with the changes like with Krypton, Lois knowing who Clark Kent is, but I think some of the other changes seemed to stop the story. That being no Clark Kent reporter before Superman, and most of all, Superman not having a to-the-rescue first sequence.

The mistake was here's...who is this guy? He's fighting two Kryptonian soldiers on the street in Smallville, breaks and destroys property. People are terrified and no one knows this guy is supposed to be Superman and on our side. This is the first major Superman sequence...and it's all this fighting. Should have been like in the middle. First Superman, say, he's revealed by stopping a falling plane, train or whatever...then this sequence.

Moreover, we didn't see much of Superman in Metropolis, which is supposed to be his main neighbourhood. Of course we didn't see Superman in Metropolis until the climax. It was like...his first time there.

With this being said, I think we've seen enough Smallville, we need...Superman...this is a Superman movie...well yeah with Batman too, he can have his cake and...okay you know what I mean. The setting should be in Metropolis more. It's like they haven't gotten there. Like Clark still hasn't fulfilled his destiny. No Jimmy Olsen yet, Luthor has red long hair...looks like we have a sequence or two at the Kent farm...again, and Martha might heavily be involved. Man of Steel just did not feel like a complete Superman movie. Where was the Daily Planet Clark Kent? And we're going back to Smallville again?

Still, from the trailers, and I'm hoping we will get some of Metropolis and Gotham. Hopefully it's not just the big battles.

I appreciate your effort to justify; but these are made-up post-hoc rationalizations that don't hold up at-all if you consider the actual context of the film.

  1. They know who this guy is... Zod called him out in front of the ENTIRE PLANET and gave a 24-hour ultimatum or "watch the world suffer the consequences." This is proven when Clark only has to say, "I'm the one they're looking for." to explain who he is in the church. EVERYONE is already familiar with the idea of someone who looks like them, lived among them, and as one of them for all this time.
  2. The ultimatum was made at night, Superman surrendered at high noon, the "Battle of Smallville" takes place early the next day, meaning the 24-hour ultimatum was averted, thus the WORLD KNEW Kal-El turned himself in for humanity's sake (frankly, the government likely announced the surrender to stave off apocalyptic panic); so humanity's first impression of him is that he cares enough to give himself up, not that HE is dangerous.
  3. The "Battle of Smallville" WAS the "to-the-rescue first sequence"... his VERY FIRST ACT is rescuing Lois, then rescuing Martha, then rescuing an A-10 pilot, then rescuing a falling soldier, then rescuing Col. Hardy... how many more "to-the-rescue" moments does his public debut need?!
  4. This sequence also clearly established who this guy was: a) Someone who cares and asks you to go inside; b) Someone rescuing others; c) Someone recognized by the locals (his moment with Pete Ross); d) Someone recognized by the military "This man is not our enemy."
That last point is particularly salient because: a) Who opened fire on Smallville and turned it into a combat zone with allowable casualties? b) Who participated in a joint-mission with an alien entity against a common foe?

From the perspective of the characters in the film, the government will be explaining why THEY opened fire on Smallville and they COOPERATED with Superman. If the government throws Superman under the bus, that's admitting they joined forces with and followed the plan of someone not to be trusted; and that they're powerless against an enemy entity amongst them... which is insane, no government would preach that and panic her own people like that.

From the perspective of the audience you should know better for a million reasons.
