What constitutes a "bad movie?"

Difference is you're talking about scripts and you're putting everything you said in the context of a job. This thread (I assume) is about movies and general audiences. As you very well know, a good script can be butchered in the stage of shooting and a well-shot film can be butchered during editing. Script is only one facet of the process.

Although I did find your post very insightful.

Bad directing (Michael Bay, George Lucas)

Bad or one-dimensional actors especially in the lead role (Keanu Reeves, Kristen Stewart, Ashton Kutcher, Michael Cera)

Bad writing (Transformers 2 & 3, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull)

Bad CGI (Die Another Day, Beowulf)

Bad editing (Quantum Of Solace, Solaris, earlier versions of Blade Runner)

Bad cinematography (War Horse)

A low budget

Or having a foreigner (particularly one with a thick Norwegian-like accent) trying to seriously act in English.

I'd say although just looking at the script. There would be other factors that would come into place for films for renowned film critics. Basically just like scripts, film can be both subjective and objective. Can't pinpoint exactly everything critics use and just using the same points as examining scripts is- as said- faulty, critics have their own points and generally some common consensus.

This cannot possibly be real.

Sounds like his lines were dubbed by a drunk Keanu Reeves.

Oh, its real. "The Room" starring Tommy Wiseau. Its the Citizen Kane of bad movies.

Hey, hey, hey do not speak ill of that great film. The Room is a f***** classic!

It could've been a decent film, but Tommy's accent turns it into an unintentional comedy.

Is it just Tommy's accent or the entire film itself? lol It's a movie so terrible in everyway possible that you can't help but to laugh in a genuine way (not to mention quoting it). It's my favorite bad film of all time.

I think some of you are just picking out flaws in popular movies and not looking deep enough into the abyss of bad movies. Have any of you seen just a part of The Country Bears? That, my friends, is a baaaaaaaaaaad movie.

I used to go to a friend's house and we would watch some movies and.. whatever, we were talking once about this guy and I told her something like, this guy's presence in a movie is a guarante —to me— that the movie will suck

don't speak ill of cereal killer. just...don't.

Lack of entertainment value or an inability to engage the audience. There are a number of poorly made/written/acted movies that manage to make me tolerate/forgive/overlook their flaws because they're enjoyable to watch.

If a movie doesn't hold my attention in the first 30 minutes then I consider it a bad movie and then I post here at SHH to tell people to avoid it. :)

And now with trailers I can tell right away that a movie will suck, such examples are Beverly Hills Chihuahua, The Smurfs, From Justin To Kelly, Avatar.

Pacing is also important. If its too slow, you'll lose most people's interest or cost the movie its replay value.
