What exactly does the Secret Invasion tie into?

I feel this merits a seperate thread because there really does seem to be a whole load of ****, going back over several years, that SI ties into. I think we need a dedicated thread so we can look into this aspect on a deeper level to fully understand what the scope of the story is. I gotta say, when Bendis said he had this in the works for years I thought it was ********. But it does seem to be true. I'm hoping that people smarter than myself and people that read more books than I do can put the pieces together. Also, be forwarned that the thread has spoilers to SI #1. It's been out a while now so it's your own fault!

It's now obvious, thanks to some nifty screenshots someone else posted, that the three mysterious hooded figures we saw in HOM were in fact Skrulls. So they actually had a large part to play in those events. Did they also have a hand to play in Dissassembled?

In New Avengers #1, a mysterious figure employs the help of Electro to break out all the supervillains of The Raft. The purpose of this was to free Karl Lykos, the power absorbing dinasour guy. The NA made a trip to the Savage Land in order to track him down, and while there they uncovered a secret mining installation being run by SHIELD. There are many hints that SHIELD is corrupted from the inside. They were mining for... that hard metal stuff, not adamantium, the other kind. I believe there were also allusions to somebody keeping a stockpile of supervillains, or am I getting mixed up with Smallville?? In SI #1, the Avengers yet again end up in the Savage Land and come across the place where they had been tied up naked. What is the signifigance to this?

In Young Avengers, there was a "2nd" Kree-Skrull war or something. Not too sure about those events 'cause I didn't read the books. That happened after Dissassembled, so I'm almost positive it would be relevant.

In Marvel Knights: Spider-Man, there was a Skrull that thought he was a superhero.

Nick Cage disappeared after the Secret War. Many people speculate that this is because he saw the invasion coming and went underground where he would be more effective in preparing for it. I didn't read Secret War. In hindsight, does that seem to have more relevance to whats happening now?

In New Avengers Annual #1, Yelena Belova is given the powers of the Super-Adaptoid by agents of Hydra. Allusions have been made that Hydra as well as SHIELD has been corrupted. Is it possible the Skrulls decided to give her these powers?

In New Avengers Annual #2, something mysterious talks to the Hood. Could actually have absolutely nothing to do with SI and probably just the demon the Hood is infected by.

How long have Hank Pym, Dugan, Jarvis, and Spider-Woman (probably) been Skrulls? Are there any stories we can point to where we can say "the Skrulls had the opportunity to replace them here"? Why did the Skrulls replace Elektra? For how long?

Also, the Illuminati series is very relevant. Black Bolt turned out to be a Skrull.

What other events throughout the Marvel univserse seem relevant or tied in in some way?

Bendis has said it ties into Annihilation in some way, and we just learned that Nova's gonna be tying into the event itself in a few months.

The war itself isn't, so far as we know; just the fact that one of the characters on YA, Hulkling, is the the true emperor of the Skrulls.

It'd be a great climax if Hulkling just showed up and told the Skrulls to stop, and then they did.

I saw a great theory that I'm just gonna post here.

ok... so i'm still working through my NA back issues looking for clues... and i got to those first couple issues where the team goes back to Japan to save Maya.

i figure that The Hand only wanted to take Ronin (Maya) out because she was messing up their work in Japan (either criminal or maybe some ultimate Skrull-goal). but what about this... when Elektra "kills" Ronin... they take off the mask and see who she is... so other than adding another member to the group, why does Skrull-ektra want Maya so badly? this time and the latest encounter in NA 39 means the Skrulls have come after Maya twice. why?

i think it has something to do with Maya's fighting ability. doesn't she have photographic reflexes? that would help her copy moves and certain talents of other heroes/villains.

that got me thinking about who i think the Skrulls have involved themselves with... i believe it was the Skrulls who hired Electro to bust Karl Lykos out of the Raft. i'm still sketchy about why they wanted Lykos (if he wasn't just a big red herring), but it may have to do with his ability to siphon energy off people. in their work to infiltrate and take over Earth, maybe the Skrulls came up with a way to isolate that energy and help them duplicate any super powers that may come with it. i also just found this entry in the "Savage Land" article on Wikipedia about the people of the Savage Land:

"They mastered genetic engineering, which had been used on the Man-Apes when the Nuwali were still maintaining the Savage Land area."

a mastery of human genetic engineering would probably come in handy for Skrulls looking to impersonate humans without being detected, right?

same thing with the New Super-Adaptoid. i think the Skrulls that work within Hydra helped make Yelena Belova (who coincidentally or not killed Lykos in that NA story) the Super-Adaptoid as another way to test out and copy super powers.

in that first issue of the Illuminati, the Skrulls mention that Xavier's mutant powers are the easiest to duplicate. because they're in his genes. which would explain why the revealed Skrulls (for the most part) have been quick to use optic blasts, armor their skin Colossus-style, and teleport with a BAMF!

the Maya thing would maybe help them imitate more learned abilities. the stuff you can't just plug into someone's genes.

so the Taskmaster recently showed up in the Initiative. he would probably be an even BETTER choice than Maya since he's fought everyone and their brother twice already. maybe he's already been switched out. maybe i'm full of crap.

i'm still not sure what all this means. and that's assuming i'm right at all. so i thought i'd put it out here for you guys.

They'll say it ties into 4+ minis and untold ongoings, but all you'll really need is the main series. Didn't we learn our lesson with Civil War (ie, the CW: X-Men mini)

I really hope they reveal all this at the end of the series.

That's not what I mean.

This thread is for people to pick out things in recent history of Marvel that possibly fit into the Invasion. We already know that HOM, the Breakout storyline, the Illuminati ties into it.

That's a pretty solid theory, actually. We've seen mostly mutant and Inhuman Super-Skrulls so far--both of whom are different from humanity due to genetic changes. The Thor Super-Skrull from Illuminati is an exception, but I very much doubt he even has the real Thor's powers in the first place. It's far more likely that the Skrulls did something similar to what Reed, Tony, and Hank did with Clor and just used technology and genetic modification to create approximations to Thor's powers.

And think about this - Hank Pym helped clone Thor. I'm sure he took what he learned from that and passed it to the Skrulls.

Yeah. I wonder where the real Hank is, come to think of it. I hope he comes back in some guise other than Yellowjacket. Man, I hate the Yellowjacket identity.

I like YellowJacket's uniform though! It's awesome. So I heard something abour Xavin from Runaways being bad now

I hate pretty much everything about Yellwojacket, especially the costume.

There are preview pics of Xavin attacking the Runaways, but we don't know if he's doing so willingly or being controlled.

No one is killing Hank. I'm sure he was replaced right before the conversation with Tony.

I don't know. If A:TI killed real Hank off and Skrull Hank is gone by the end of Secret Invasion, Hank would be totally gone and Bendis would probably be happier.

Maybe Hank's been a skrull for years and it was really a skrull that beat up Janet way back. Lol. Hey maybe right? I mean what kind of real man would do that to his wife?

A real man with severe mental problems, like Hank had at the time.

I'm pretty sure the savage land storyline in NA is very significant to the Skrull plot - especially the fact that so many plotlines were left unresolved and it couldn't be coincidence that the SKrull shuttle crashed there of all places in SI #1.

What was the significance of freeing Sauron?
Did anything happen to the Avengers while they were captured?
What is the SKrull connection to the Savage Land?
Why was Wolverine there on his own?
Why were Shield agents mining Vibranium? Were they working for Fury or the SKrulls?

Interesting thought, and they want us to undoubtedly think that way. Bendis has stated in interviews he thinks it's disgusting that previous editorials allwed Hank to stay on the team after that. Although it is a bit of a stretch in terms of continuity...

Personally, I found it quite odd the difference in Hank's behaviour after Avengers: DA, and the Beyond! mini onwards. Does this mean that Skrull-Hank sexed up Tigra?

Invaded another planet and getting laid with super hot tiger human? Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice

Nick Cage disappeared after the Secret War.

Really? I'm sure I saw him on E! a few times since... :oldrazz:

It's likelier that Beyond featured the real Hank. His behavior there was far more in line with what I remember of Hank than anything Initiative-related.

It would give him a chance to do something even nastier to Tigra.

True say, but I remember that Hank and Janet were in a very 'together,' place after Disassembled, and the change was a bit random. But what you're saying is true too, Hank is a bit of a **** full stop.
