Is Secret Invasion racist?

Actual arguments and coherent points about a ****ing comic book?

Personally, I like to save my pseudo-intellectual rantings for **** that actually matters. That's kind of why I became a journalist--so I can have a outlet for my social and political frustrations, but apply to them something that's actually relevant. Not, you know...a comic book.

So there goes what little respect I had left for journalists.

You did finally admit that your statements here are incoherent, so at least that's progress.

It's those Werther's Original candies they keep in the lobbies of banker's offices.

Fraud smells like what happens when the electricity gets turned off in an abandoned house and all the food in the fridge rots and overheats into a blackish-brownish viscous liquid that seeps down to the underside of the fridge and then I end up cleaning it off the floor on that service trip to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Naw, that's what the effects of fraud smells like. Like how a MOAB doesn't smell the same as a pile of charred corpses.

What is this cover saying? Is it saying that we shouldn`t embrace change? Is it saying I shouldn`t trust the very friendly skrull lady with a nice dessert? Why shoudln`t we trust them? Because they are skrulls? That seems patently racist. Would a comic company publish a cover with the same latent meaning with a mexican or asian woman on the cover?

They raise some pretty good points. It does seem they are using an alien race as evil, one-dimensional villains. If you did that with a group of people on earth you would be being racist because it is a species of green aliens its apparantly ok.

The return of the "embrace change" tagline this time used to highlight how gullible and naive the "hippy" characters are. So the comic is trying to say they are idiots for accepting skrulls into their community? That they should run them out of town because they are aliens?

Marvel seem to be walking a very dodgy line with this. Hopefully they will resolve it in a way that will defuse the problem but its just as likely they will end it with the remaining skrulls being wiped out by the marvel superheroes.

Marvel has always had a bit of a dodgy view of the skrulls. Whereas most races became 2-dimensional the skrulls have mostly been villains. There are a couple of character and events to do with skrulls who were godd guys but mostly marvel has portrayed the entire skrull race as being bad. I can almost imagine this scene occuring in a meeting at the avengers headquarters about the skrulls...[YT][/YT] Marvel does seem to portray them in the way that guy views other races. I don`t think its conscious racism on marvel`s part but it deserves some thought on their part about whetehr they should reevaluate the treatment of the skrulls.

Good points.

To answer the Question:

No.

Reason:

Marvel has shown Skrulls who are either not following the Party line or if they do they are reluctant.

The attitude of invaders is dipicted correctly,... I just have small issue that a race can cross interstellar space,.... and still have trouble with any group on earth outside of Lavertia or Wakanda.

My only gripe is that like Civil War,... it is IMPOSSIBLE to resolve this cleanly. If this were ANYTHING like reality, I expect we would see Skrulls discovered/exposed for the next twenty years Marvel time.

I have no trouble with this.

Why?

The Skrulls were almost wiped out through no fault of their own JUST as they seemed to be going in a more peaceful direction. Their neverending war with the Kree was in hiatus,... The position of "bad Alien" had been taken by the Badoon and the Brood, With the loss of their home world before the annialation wave,... (sp) they were all set to pull the hole in after themselves and set up some self improvement as a race.

But,... they get kicked while they are down and decide to make SUMBODY pay for it.

Enter Earth and those pesky Superhumans that protect it.

Best solution?:

They lose,.. we give them antarctica, and scrutinized permission to mix in with the Earth population.

How many Alien races ALREADY live on Marvel Earth?

I could live with the Skrulls coexisting on Earth and having their visas tracked by SWORD.

You hang out on a comic-book discussion forum...even though you claim to dislike discussion of comic books? You're either masochistic, or you're yet another self-loathing comic book fan, trying to pretend that comics don't matter to you, even as you keep on reading them.

Discussion of comic books? That's fine. Hell, I'm all for that, let's do that. Hijacking discussion of a comic book so you can start sermonizing about your own socio-political values? Now that reeks of pretentiousness.

You know, if you're trying to seem important and relevant, bragging about being a member of a politico-whipped Fourth Branch of the Government power-elite-mouthpiece isn't the way to do it.

I really wasn't bragging. It's one of the most frustrating jobs ever. The only saving grace is that, for the most part, I'm allowed to say whatever I want.

EDIT - Hmm. You know what? This might get me in trouble.

So I assume you're mad at the original poster, who started a thread about comic books and racism. I didn't hijack ****. This thread started out socio-political, and it's just sad that when a person brings up a thing like white Eurocentric arrogance, he gets accused of "hijacking" the conversation to further some evil sinister political Commie agenda. God, who are you, The Man's press secretary?

I'm allowed to say whatever I want.
See, now I know you're not a journalist.

Actually, I did criticize the OP for this ******ed topic, but I'm also criticizing you for furthering this kind of ********. White Eurocentric arrogance? Give me a ****ing break.

Oh, and I never accused you of pushing some kind of evil communist plot, or whatever. But it's nice to know that you're putting words in my mouth. The true mark of a pseudo-intellectual.

I editorialize, smart guy, I write op-eds. Giving my opinions is what I do, it's what they want from me. So yes, for the most part (which I see you conveniently cropped out), I am allowed to say whatever I want.

Secret Invasion has elements of things from real life. It's a story. Quit freaking out. And so what if it is a little racist? Will it make you more racist?

EDIT You know what? More hatey than I felt I wanted to be.

I am leaving this though:

I editorialize, smart guy

If you'll pardon me Imma browse over to Townhall.com, try an' guess which one is you.

Exactly! It's a comic book. It's not racist, not in the slightest, and I don't know how screwed up in the head you have to even try to look for (false) racist undertones in it.

For God's sake, the story is being written by Brian Michael Bendis. The guy leans pretty far to the left, and even if he didn't, he isn't a talented enough writer to subtly convey quasi-racist attitudes through a fictional story. If there was some deeper xenophobic message to Secret Invasion, it would be sitting on the surface; it would be obvious. Like, Mark Millar obvious. That's clearly not the case.

"Embrace Change"? It's a half-baked idea that was clearly tacked on later in the game, to take advantage of the "change" slogans being thrown around by McCain and Obama. It's just an advertising gimmick, which, by default, should tell you there's nothing genuine about it. And it's not the heart of the story.

Secret Invasion, at it's heart, is a dumb "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"-esque story in which fictional heroes are being threatened by fictional aliens and they have to get their **** together and retaliate. That's it. There's nothing deeper to it.

Fifthfiend: A little too slow on the edit button. I'll let it drop, though, because I already closed the damn tab. =\

Also, I'm a libertarian. Hardly the staunch Republican you seem to think me to be. Hell, I just recently wrote a (dare I say?) scathing critique of Palin.

Quite so. I watch Nazi propaganda films myself, because ethics should never enter into one's evaluation of entertainment consumption. God, I'm tired of this country and its rejection of morality.

Sorry, everyone knows libertarians are just Republicans that like drugs. You'll vote McCain come November. Don't even try to pretend you won't, it just makes you look pathetic.

Yeah, **** sociology and proven scientific fact!

Oh, and I never accused you of pushing some kind of evil communist plot, or whatever.
So you're literally just mad that I discussed socio-political concepts? You just want people to not think? God, you're more Republican than I thought.

See, if you were a real journalist, you'd know that nobody gets to say what they want.

Who says comics lack social relevance?
They've always reflected issues of the day.
They are more then silly drawings and bad writing conceived for underachieving teenagers.

Some of them are, anyway. Others...
