What Green Lantern Got Wrong

How about the fact that Ryan didn't seem to bothered by the fact that he made contact with a frickin' Alien! I certainly wouldn't have the sense to tell a purple Alien about getting him to a hospital like he was a man, I would be in utter awe.

Hammond's reaction was more genuine.

Someone else pointed out that we didn't get one, not ONE, single shot of Hal Jordan in his suit holding the Power Battery. How is that not a requirement when making the first ever Green Lantern movie?

Hell, he never even 'charged' his ring. A one second tap, and we're good for the rest of the movie lol

IIRC, he did recharge the power ring once. However it wasn't in the old school manner unfortunately, I remember him saying that his power ring was low on juice.

The worst thing about that scene? When Abin Sur finally died Hal's reaction was "Oh no no no don't do that. Don't do that".

Christ, i hope Reynolds didn't ad lib that.

Yeah way too many groan worthy moments like that. Gosh I remember people groaning (and rightly so) about the "Marco Polo" stuff in Fantastic Four, but by comparison that stuff looks like Tolstoy.

One such Green Lantern, Abin Sur of Sector 2814, defeated the fear-essence being Parallax and imprisoned him in the Lost Sector (Sector 666) on the ruined planet Ryut. However, in the present day, Parallax escapes from his prison. Six months later, after killing four Green Lanterns and destroying two planets, Parallax attacks Sector 2814 and mortally wounds Abin Sur, who escapes and crash-lands on Earth. The dying Abin Sur commands his ring to find a worthy successor on the planet.

Does the movie explain why the Green Lanterns couldn't do what Abin Sur did? I meanb this article gives me the idea that Abin Sur alone defeated Parallax the 1st time and put him in a cage more or less, but when he escaped he got the best of him and it took Hal Jordan to more or less survive and outsmart him? Is it just me or is it arguebly the biggest question in the movie why Abin Sur couldn't prepare future Lanterns incase Parallax ever escaped? Like do the same thing he did, which was what btw?

No, it's not explained. No, we don't know why Hal is all alone when he fights Parallax. No, they don't say anything more about the other Lanterns that are killed. No, Hal doesn't do the same thing to Parallax that Abin Sur did.

No, that is not the biggest question the movie leaves unanswered.

That's because you had a Reynolds type in the role and he's doing his comedy schtick, it was inappropriate for Hal Jordan.

You guys have pointed out most if not all of the films problems but what REALLY stuck out and annoyed me was the boring score and lack of a theme for the character. That's one of the things I always look forward to with a new superhero flick. A kickass superhero theme song. Iron Man, Hellboy, and Robocop all immediately come to mind because they are the top of my list. Even the Fantastic Four had a pretty decent one.

DC has had this thing lately where a few notes count as a theme song. It happened in The Dark Knight and here it is again in Green Lantern.

I remember watching Star Trek in theaters and actually being excited for a Green Lantern movie even more afterwards. Thinking "If that's what they can do with these guys, I cannot wait to see what they do with the Green Lantern Corps!". I expected an academy for space cops and these guys going on patrol to different planets and all kinds of alien creatures like the bar scene in Star Wars but grander and we get...earth. Hal and his friends talking about how awesome this power is...Great.

I can rant on and on about how the ring was just presented as just another superpower in this movie which became just another superhero origin movie. It actually astounds me just how much this movie lacks scale...I have to watch First Flight again. If you want a Green Lantern movie with a great story and most of all a great theme song stick with Green Lantern: First Flight.

1. After the first showdown with Hammond GL just......left him in an aircraft hanger unconscious.

2. Amanda Waller is a very interesting character. She runs the Suicide Squad for crying out loud! She was wasted by the writers. Role should have been played by Monique who can pull off the confident big woman.

3. Why do the anti-aircraft and flame thrower constructs fire real ordinance?

Shotty editing.
Terrible directing.
Terrible script.
Terrible score.
Alarming lack of character development.
Uninspired presentation of the villains.

agreed, agreed, agreed

The one thing they got wrong that made everything else trail behind it in the same manner was they forgot that the target audience for this character and most its fans are well over 25 years old, but the way the movie is told is for everyone under that age.

Most DC die hard fans of today are older guys and those were the critics that bashed it and most of us on here who are bashing it. the ones who have waited since the 70s/80s for them to translate this movie and what we get is a movie that is for the PG13 crowd.

See The Dark Knight was PG13, but geered towards the R rated crowd who understood the deep undertones that if explained to a child it might be a little much to them, but this GL movie was too close to the approach they had with fantastic four and they forgot that people who actually pay for the success of Superhero movies are not just film goers but fans of the genre and ADULTS. kids dont pay to go for multiple viewings in most cases so when u make a very kid oriented movie u lose the adults who are willing to pay for it hence why kid movies are never TOP grossing movies of all time, but movies that EVERYONE can appreciate and GL is not that.

Most of us felt it was STUPID in a sense as far as writing. it was written for children and not a sound adult mind

I mean in the dark knight, Batman had a dude hanging over the ledge then he drops him and breaks his leg. harvey dent had his face burned and Joker did some serious killing in that movie and had a point...ANARCHY and very well established. It was written for smart people and instead of dumbing down to the kids level it forced people to elevate their minds to a smarter type of adaptation like what Burton did in 1989. The Matrix was smart and very deep and then part two came out and they felt a need to insult us with non stop action and horrible CGI here and there as if the first movie didnt have a formula that worked and they needed to dumb it down for certain people.

people want to be treated as if they are intelligent...INCEPTION proved this point. unless studios start rewarding people with intelligent scripts for adults then comic book adaptations are doomed because they will end up where Batman & Robin left off...kids grow up adults are adults till the end so they nee to make a movie that stands the test of time in every department to where when a kid grows up he doesnt feel he has out grown the silliness of movies he liked as a child. Movies shouldnt be flawed at any age.

GL will be those movies where the kids who did enjoy it will grow up and look back at it like...yikes, that was actually HORRIBLE

Kinda like how superman 1978 was GREAT as a kid and elements of it still are, but spinning the world backwards or throwing an "S" as a weapon is down right insulting to any adult of that time and today...i couldnt even finish the movie after my home girl annihilated the flaws and goofy aspects of that movie.

We are in the age of realism and relating to the audience and todays audience is not camp friendly...i'm still even shocked Thor did so well as it was too generic and goofy for my flavor.

The writing
You introduce characters like Amanda Waller, Tom Kalamaku, et al but don't have them play a role at the end or have any significance to the plot? If they don't have a crucial role, cut them out of the script. Not enough backstory for Hector, Carol and Hal really hurts the film too. And I wanted more creative constructs!

The editing
WTF Stuart Baird? I'm surprised how choppy it was, and from the guy who edited Superman: The Movie for crying out loud. The movie felt incomplete and hollow, but I would blame that on Christopher Rouse (The Bourne Ultimatum, Green Zone) who got an "additional editor" credit after Baird.

The score
I expected a lot better from James Newton Howard and Martin Campbell. There's two good musical motifs that should've been developed into a rousing main theme. I wished Campbell asked David Arnold to score this instead of JNH. So disappointed.

There's plenty of things I could point out but I'd be repeating what you guys have said, something I'll bring up that I havent seen discussed much was the mid credits scene. I gotta say never has a major moment felt so uninspired. It felt irrelevant and was an after thought when it could of been build up and been an arc in the sequel. What a disappointing moment for something so important IMO.

I'm glad you brought that up. What should have been a major character moment was an after thought. Absolutely disgusting.

POSSIBLY IT WAS BECAUSE OF THIS TOO:

I have said this same thing to many people. The mid-credits scene had absolutely no build up or character arcing leading up to it. Horrible writing.

I do not think that woman has seen a Star Wars...anything.

Yeah, I hate these commercial and for the most part refuse to publish them on my site. They don't take into account the context of the quote (She could have said "I was promised Star Wars meets Iron Man but I got Van Wilder meets Futurama") and it's unfair to the reviewers to not have a say so. One of my writers had a comic review comment taken out of context and it took forever to get that vetoed before the TPB went to the printer. Bleh

this was frigging SHOCKING. SM1 peter gets bitten by a spidey, after a canteen fight he realises he is stronger and faster than a normal human, he then runs down an alley and realises he can stick to walls and then for a couple of minutes is unbridled JOY of having super powers. the way peter acts is the way 'I' would act if that happened to me.

If I felt ill after being bitten by a spider, I would have gone to a hospital.

My only complaint about the music was that stupid jazz piece...or...whatever... they did when Hal strutted in front of his reflection at Oa.

No character development
Bad Writing
Should´ve saved Hector for another film instead of serving the purpose of dying and making the plot move forward.
Most scenes on Earth and Hal with Carol where completely useless
They heavily use CGI everywhere, there were a couple of parts that could´ve been set pieces and The Guardians looked awful.
Parallax was a huge stupid cloud (deja-vu anyone?) and a weak villian, its surprising how Sinestro´s lanterns couldnt take him down.

.
Baird's the editor you hire to fix movies that are bad and aren't working and he salvages them, Ex. Tomb Raider, MI2. Good chance that the scenes were just...already terrible to begin with.

I want to know why they cut the actor they hired to play John Stewart? he came to Heroes Con in NC for goodness sake. It seems he didn't even know he was being cut from the film.

Well, first off he was never John Stewart. And he was in the film. Back of Broome's Bar by the pool tables; that was the scene he shot.
