The Dark Knight Rises What if.... TDKR doesn't live up to the hype??

I doubt many will actually admit it if it doesn't live up to the hype. They'll find a way of explaining that it's the definition of awesome, there will be reasons why it's 'even better' than TDK, even if from an outsiders unbiased standpoint it's clearly not.

as much as I'd like to be, I am really not all that hyped about this movie in the first place, so, my expectations are not as high as a lot of people's seem to be

In all seriousness, of course there is a chance this movie will fail. There is always that chance. Especially for me since I failed to get into the hype over Inception, Nolan's last movie. There is always the chance it could fail. That being said, everything Ive seen has done nothing but intrigue me more and more. I haven't seen anything that makes me worry in the slightest. It just looks awesome to me.

Thing is, there will be idiots on every side of the argument. Those who will be overzealous to defend it and those who will do their best to put it down. It's the way of the fanboy.

The chance that it'll be a failure in that regard is low, though it's obviously a possibility. Just not a likely one.

I usually catch the warming signs that I might not like a movie I'm very hyped over before it's released. Like 99% of the time, if I didn't like it I caught a warning during the marketing. Sometimes it slips by me, but it's rare. Even Prometheus, which I am extremely and epically excited for, I have seen a few warnings that lead me to believe it could fail (Though very unlikely). I actually have not seen any for TDKR. Everything so far leads me to believe I will love this movie and it's the epic conclusion I hope for.

I'm more hyped for this movie than I have been for any other in my life. My expectations are insane. I love this series so much that I overlook many of its flaws and continue to see Dark Knight as mind blowing as it was when a first laid eyes on it. But if TDKR sucks... I will be the first to admit it. Literally... I'll be among the first bunch of the public to see the film... Australia ftw!

The thing is, they knew exactly what the expectations were going to be 4 years ago when they started writing this movie. They knew the risks. Nolan knew the risks. It's not like they blindly walked in thinking, "well, we'll just make another one.".

I mean if this movie somehow manages to miss, it truly would be unexpected. Nolan is a total general. When he set out to top himself, his entire cast and crew feel obligated to bring their A-games. And they're happy to do it, because of the respect he commands, and the prestige that comes with working on one of his projects. It just creates an environment where failure becomes a very remote possibility. Obviously, one cannot expect utter perfection...

but there's a reason why Chris Nolan has such a great reputation. Seriously, I'm sick of this "Nolanite" crap. I don't think he's infallible or God. I just know he's an excellent filmmaker, and that's a very easy concept to wrap one's head around. That's not directed at anyone in particular in this thread, just the general vibe I'm getting these days.

With all the hype of TDK and participating in the virals and following the film everyday on these boards, I went in highly anticipating TDK. For me, it didn't live up to my expectations and was a let down in several regards. I'm not saying it was a bad film, far from it, but it could have been much better in my eyes.

I wouldn't be surprised if TDKR doesn't live up to its "hype", and I use the term loosely as it hasn't had the same level of energy as TDK had back in the day. In all honesty, I expect it to be a let down, and am ready for it to be. I'm a pessimist in life, so hopefully I am in for a pleasant surprise.

Or maybe... there is just some people who don't like the film?

What an alien thought I know. What sort of prick would dare dislike one of Nolan's Bat movies. I mean, what gives them the right to an opinion? Seriously, how dare they.

Then have your opinion! But most people here love Nolan's Batman films and they are convinced TDKR will be great, but you want them to tell you they don't like Nolan's films and that TDKR will be terrible just because it's YOUR opinion?

Accept that you're in the wrong place and go away or stay and accept that people here have an opinion different than yours. You can say that you don't like Nolan's films or that TDKR is too dark but stop playing the victim and moaning because most people here disagree with you.

What if.... TDKR doesn't live up to the hype??

People will pout, whine and crucify everyone involved for as long as they can and then eventually everyone will move on. I mean, it's not like we can do anything. :oldrazz:

Nolan will have to lay low and take a private security job in Sao Paulo.

When we say 'the hype' - do we mean hype as in anticipation, or The Hype being the forums where crazed inmates roam the frozen expanses? :funny:

As long as it's better than Batman Begins and Insomina (Nolan's weakest films IMHO) then I will be just fine with it.

I'm super excited for the movie, it's at least number 2 on the list of movies I want to see but I'm keeping my hype in check because this is a third movie. Nolan is not some magical creature, he can screw up a third film just like any other director.

I doubt many will actually admit it if it doesn't live up to the hype. They'll find a way of explaining that it's the definition of awesome, there will be reasons why it's 'even better' than TDK, even if from an outsiders unbiased standpoint it's clearly not.

If the Star Wars fans can admit that The Phantom Menace is terrible, I don't see why the Batman fans would not admit that TDKR disappointed them.

Name one highly anticipated movie that didn't live up to the hype for some people. There is none. There is ALWAYS going to be numbers of people who didn't get their expectations met.

It's a guarantee.

I think if people go in with their expectations in check, they probably won't be disappointed. I highly doubt this is going to be better than TDK, but it doesn't have to be. Unless they have a scene where Bruce is walking down the streets of Gotham disco dancing, it will probably be OK.

I agree with you OP. I have a feeling that TDKR will not live up to the hype. IMO, BB and TDK were top notch (BB being superior to TDK though), but so far, some significant aspects of Batman's world have been disappointing with TDKR. I understand the movie has not come out yet, but before BB and TDK even came out, I can already sense how badass the two movies would be. I am totally not getting that same vibe.

Catwoman's look is disappointing. She conceals her identity by wearing an eye mask? Come on! I thought Nolan was the God of practicality? That just proves his fanboys only give him that title to give him credibility when they start losing debates for Nolan's shortcomings. No claws. No whip. No physical trademark of Catwoman other than that passable cat ears. She is only Catwoman by name IMO.

Bane is also disappointing. What is Bane's most significant trademark? His jacked size due to venom. Thick and ripped. He is the guy that is larger than life. He has the brains, and he also has the muscles to make up for it. He's not your typical meat head. When you say Batman, you will think of a man that looks like a Bat. When you say Joker, you think of a Clown. Catwoman, a cat looking female. Penguin, a short, fat guy with an extremely prominent nose. Mr Freeze, a guy who looks like he's frozen. I can go on forever. When I see Nolan's representation of Bane, I do not see Bane. I see a new and unknown villain. I like the mask but that's about it. I do not want a Bane that will intimidate Batman not through looks, but by his combatives skillset. That's not Bane! Bane is supposed to be intimidating physically and skill wise.

I still don't see what's so intimidating with Hardy's eyes. Either people are easily pleased or they easily worship any vision that Nolan reveals. All his eyes show me is that he is constantly frowning. Joker from TDK gave me that impression that he is one evil mother canucker. Not with Bane.

I hope I'm wrong but my gut feeling tells me TDKR will be disappointing. I know it'll still do well because Nolan has converted many audience of BB and TDK into Nolanites. My 3 cents.

I had immense hype for TDK and it lived up to my expectations. I remember telling all my friends in December of '07 that with all the hype I had built up that I was afraid the movie was going to let me down. It did not let me down, and now with TDKR I may not have as much hype but I do have very high expectations. Nolan has never let me down and I trust that TDKR will be as epic and we all hope it can be.
